A big luxury hotel yes, but one that is also in tune with its environment.
Accommodation is in the main hotel building and in villas of different size and offering different levels of comfort in the rainforest itself or down by the beach.
Even the entry level (hotel) rooms are pretty splendid (contemporary design, lots of teak, modern blue-tooth enabled speakers) though those on the lowest floors will be darker. A top floor pool view room would be a good option. The rainforest villas are something really special though and once you’ve seen inside and sat on the veranda watching the dusky langurs feeding in the trees you’ll be hooked. Many people clearly are: the hotel has a huge amount of repeat business, the most frequent returnee having been there 49 times but you only have to make 5 visits to get your name on a Villa plaque!
The beach is probably the best feature of the hotel: a long arc of golden sand, fringed by mangroves and palms, where you can stretch out on a sunbed and watch sea eagles soaring overhead or white breasted kingfishers darting around the beach. You are kept hydrated by the beach team coming round with water and fresh ice every hour or so (and now and then with fresh fruit or ice cream.)
Choice of 4 restaurants including a good Thai and a fabulous Malay/ Indian one (but make sure to book).
Don’t miss the free tours in particular in the rainforest with a naturalist and do visit the Permagarden where you will find the hotel ‘walks the walk’ on sustainability. Details of these experiences on the, excellent, hotel app accessible all over the property because of very good WiFi coverage.
Unsurprisingly, rural simplicity and ecological credentials don’t come cheap but you probably guessed that already (and there are plenty of takers.) The StValentines day buffet was, for example, £120 per head (though very generous, and with the best selection of desserts I have seen in a while).
Staff are universally charming, friendly and helpful, particularly to guests who clearly return every year and stay two, three or more weeks at a time.
Hard to know what the guest profile is but during our visit it was predominantly the older, British, County set though there were also some families with younger children (who the staff made a big fuss of).
With any big hotel there will be service breakdowns and we experienced one. However, the service recovery was faultless, smooth and generous.

We stayed at the Datai for a week to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.
It was a truly fantastic experience.
Everything went smoothly, and the hotel offers just the right type of discreet luxury.

Staff is attentive, efficient, friendly and discreet. Everywhere, from front desk to poolside to gym to restaurants.
The food is delicious - we tried the Thai, the beach and the Indo-Malay restaurants, and loved them all.
Breakfast is a dream, with plenty of options and chefs cooking up pretty much anything one could wish for. Juices are pressed fresh and upon request, mixing fruit and veg.
And the beach! A long stretch of sand embraced by trees in a beautiful bay.
Rooms are tastefully furnished, beds comfortable. No cheap lighting or furniture anywhere.
Little extra attentions are the norm: from a fine patisserie cake and champagne welcoming us to our room as we celebrated our first wedding anniversary, to waiters bringing chilled water and ice lollies or ice cream regularly to guests lounging by the beach.

The only critique is perhaps the spa: while the grounds are beautiful, it is wildly overpriced. Luckily the neighbouring Marriott hotel, a short walk alongside the beach, has a fabulous spa overlooking the entire bay, offering more reasonable prices.

In short, staying at the Datai is a delicious treat. I would go back again, and again, and again, and recommend it all over.

From the moment you arrive and are announced by a gong you know you are somewhere special. The Datai is spectacular in every aspect, a sizeable 5-star resort with a boutique feel and zero bling, in a beautiful and peaceful location, designed with every detail in mind, with impeccable service, fantastic food and one of the best beaches I know. It’s great for all kinds of travellers and has a very inclusive feel.

The spacious villas are large, beautiful, tastefully designed and completely refurbished with great attention to every little detail. Soft drinks, coffee and carefully selected (and very delicious) snacks are included in the rate. The rainforest villas can be a tad dark due to their location, if that bothers you, go for a beach villa or a room in the main hotel.

We booked half board, which was well worth it, being able to dine around in all the restaurants, which are excellent across the board. We loved Gulai House for its romantic jungle setting and delicious local food, and the main restaurant, which provided an outstanding fine dining experience.

The only thing is found missing was more of a barefoot dining option in the beach. The beach restaurant is quite family focussed (think Pizza, burgers etc.), and probably was the least appealing of the restaurants to us.

All restaurants have a comprehensive wine list (think huge, as in a 3-star Michelin restaurant) that is surprisingly well priced across the board, from entry level to the finest wines. Even better hotels in Asia often disappoint here, not the Datai.

The rainforest setting is spectacular, with plenty of flora and fauna to admire within a short walk. The hotel’s knowledgeable naturists provide guided tours which I can highly recommend. The beach is one of the best I’ve been to, a long crescent of sand that is swimmable at all tides. Beach staff will swiftly make sure you are comfortable and bring little delights such as ice cream and fruit sticks throughout the day. There is a beautiful main pool for adults only but being on one of the world’s best beaches it didn’t make sense to us being there. The pool by the beach is the family pool and can get a bit crowded with kids.

The spa is beautiful and first class, albeit quite pricey, providing relaxing treatments in open pavilions with the creek flowing past.

Writing this review makes me want to come back to this beautiful place – sure we will at some point!

We have just arrived back from a 12 night stay after celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary at this amazing hotel. From the first contact with the reception staff through to our leaving, the whole experience was way beyond our widest expectations. What ever you read in the holiday brochures or on-line reviews, don't believe them because this place for first timers is way better than any brochure or review can describe. The minute you arrive you receive the most fabulous welcome
and then on, every single member of staff from management to the guy sweeping the beach are all so nice and make sure that everything is OK with your stay. The rooms in the main complex are huge and extremely comfortable. At 64sq m. they are as large as some family homes! The location of the complex is quite staggering. Set in a rain forest and then sweeping down to the most glorious beach is quite the best we have ever seen, surpassing even some of the best hotels in the UAE that we have stayed at. The wonder of seeing the most beautiful monkeys playing in the grounds, or seeing the majestic white belly sea eagle gliding over the waves is magical.Listen to the sounds coming from the forest or the sound of the waves on one of the best beaches in the world is worth every penny you will spend to stay at this hotel. The food at all the restaurants is a very high standard and our favourite was The Pavilion, a wonderful Thai restaurant and The Gulai House offers really good Malaysian food.
There are lots of activities that the hotel can arrange for you and all are good value, albeit some of the jungle walks can be quite arduous and you need to be quite fit to undertake the longer walks. The golf course nearby is quite simply the most beautiful that I have ever played in the world.
The fact that so many people return year after year to this paradise island hotel bears testament to the fact that this is quite simply one of the best hotels in the world.

A group of us were at the Datai when they reopened on June 12th. Private villas, open air restaurants and a private beach helped us feel much safer. All the staff wore masks and practiced social distancing very well. Rooms are sanitised and left vacant for 24 hours before a new guest is allowed to use it. The team at The Datai were amazing, warm, efficient and evidently very happy and ready to reopen and receive guests. They really went the distance to make our stay safe and a truly memorable one. Thank you Arnaud and team for hosting us. We can’t wait to go back! Oh, and the superlatives usually accorded to their beach are all true.

We visited The Datai under recommendation from friends who have stayed many times, and it did not disappoint. Far from it in fact, this well run, service orientated, gem nestled into the rain forest, far exceeded our expectations. It is a long way if you are flying from the UK but well worth the effort. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left 10 wonderful days later we felt pampered and precious to every single member of staff. We had a canopy room with wonderful views of the pool and the forest, a prime location for watching wild life both near and far. So often monkeys and squirrels travelled across our balcony at quite close quarters. We thoroughly recommend quests to immerse in the local wildlife with excellent guided walks from the Nature Centre. A treatment at The Spa should not be missed. What a wonderful experience..pampered, pampered. There are several choices of eating venues and we tried them all with the exception of the day time beach bar. The Dining Room was super with a superb tasting or Al a Carte menu with a European theme. The Thai Pavilion , Gulai House and Beach Club were also excellent. We didn't leave the hotel for the whole of our stay...why would you need to. We will be back as soon as we can. Thanks especially to Jessica, Jamilah, Jaya, Tony, Hafiz, Juliani and everyone else whose names we did not note but who worked equally hard to ensure an exceptional and restorative stay.

A warm and friendly welcome awaits guests at The Datai. The lobby lounge, which overlooks the main pool, and, from a distance, the Andaman Sea, hosts the check-in formalities. A cold towel, refreshing cinnamon tea, and pastries with jam, all served beautifully, are presented to the guests. A second welcome drink of either a Datai Gin and Tonic or champagne is then offered before guests are escorted to their rooms.

The check-in and welcome set the tone of a carefully choreographed guest experience honed through decades of welcoming guests from around the world. Heightening and enriching guest experience can be felt during our entire stay. It is evident when dining in any of its F&B outlets, partaking in its myriad of water and rainforest activities, and the exceptional spa. However, book your treatments in advance as it has very limited slots. The experience and treatments were, however, excellent.

We stayed in a rainforest pool villa (no 30), which is a short walk to the beach, most facilities, and even the lobby (if you don't mind the steps). The villa is spacious and beautiful; however, a technology upgrade will enhance guests' overall stay. A tablet that allows automated control over lights, blinds, entertainment, etc., will bring the property into the modern age. The tablet will allow for simplified control of light switches, which took some time locating and getting used to; electronically drawn blinds for ease in allowing more daylight into the villa during the day as it can get dark; blackout curtains or blinds, especially behind the bed and a smart tv for those wishing to sync their gadgets; and speakers in the bathroom.

I've read and heard so much about the breakfast at the Datai, and although it was good, I wouldn't say it was the best. Many elements of the Datai are indulgent, but the breakfast is not so. The ala carte options, despite including foie gras and lobster eggs benedict on the supplemental menu, were just OK. The taste and presentation were somehow average.

Service is, for the most part, top-notch and truly five starts but is it personal, not all the time. There were some hit and miss at some of the dining establishments. Also, for its size, it would be challenging. But there was one incident worth mentioning in this review. There was a minor water leak by the windowsill in our villa. I could have wiped it myself but chose to report it so their maintenance team is aware and can rectify the root cause before further and more permanent damage can happen on the wooden ledge. When we returned to the villa after dinner that day, there was a chilled bottle of champagne with a handwritten card apologizing for the inconvenience. Impresssive!

The Datai is an exceptional property. Its remote location in the rainforest right on the cusp of the Andaman Sea, matched with its beautiful design and architecture, warm, friendly, and efficient service, make it a truly breathtaking destination and one I look forward to visiting again very soon.

With trepidation I booked 8 nights at the Datai, as I was worried the isolation would mean I would be bored, This is the first destination I have ever been to where I was content to just enjoy the hotel and its surroundings. But this not a hotel this is the Datai. The setting is unique, the most stunning location of forest and beach, there was so much to see and do especially if you are interested in wildlife . The hotel itself is understated luxury, the food exceptional and the staff superb. We were more than happy with our basic grade room and actually preferred being on the lower ground level with a terrace rather than a balcony. I spent many an hour just sat listening and watching. I was surprised how few people sat on their balconies. We asked to see the villas in preparation for for our next visit, yes we will be back.
I had a massage at the spa, the setting was perfect, the massage was excellent and while relaxing after the massage saw wild boar foraging on the other side of the creek perfect!

We returned to the Datai, and spent 3 nights in a rainforest pool villa followed by 6 nights in a beach villa. Staying in 2 different types of accommodation on a single stay was a new experience for us and one which we love very much.I also believe that you can never go wrong with any choice of room, for this is the Datai ,a truly special place, a complete destination by itself.
Tucked deeper in the rainforest, this pool villa is beside a gurgling stream and twining lianas,in a quiet, tranquil location. There’s a spacious open deck overlooking the pool and a covered balcony with 2 chairs and a day bed. A huge tree is left to grow out from this timber balcony creating a most natural feeling of being embraced by the rainforest. We spent hours outside , totally immersed in this rainforest experience. Being surrounded by trees, and deeper inside ,than the rainforest villas, it is darker and the pool has limited sun exposure, the water , cool and refreshing, akin to taking a dip in a jungle stream. We had requested one that was more private and villa 18 didn’t disappoint.
Unlike our previous stays, this time we did a lot of walking, up the steep stairs to the Dining Room for breakfast, daily, and only took the buggy for dinner at the Gulai House which was a bit further from our villa. We reserved beach activities for our second part of our stay.
If you’re worried about the hassle of moving to a new accomodation, rest assured that The Datai will arrange a most smooth transfer. We stayed in a different beach villa this time, The sounds and sights here are different from the rainforest experience; brighter, with a bigger pool, and direct access to the beautiful beach . Sham, our butler took really good care of us. Attentive ,pleasant and caring, nothing was too much trouble for him.
Throughout our stay, (end of November extending into the first two days of December), we enjoyed lovely weather, not too hot or humid, breezy with some rain. There was higher occupancy during this time and all the restaurants were opened. Do plan your dinner well in advance especially if you would like a particular slot. We enjoyed dining in all the restaurants; our favourite this time was the Beach Club, despite being very busy, the staff were simply marvellous, always, and never without a smile. Really miss all of you. Breakfast at the Dining Room was not just breakfast; it was an experience by itself, with high quality spread and impeccable service.
It was only our third visit, but I can say this, when you can feel that special connection,(and you will ),The Datai, will no longer be just a hotel, instead it will become a beautiful relationship, one that will grow with time, ,with returning visits, to be savoured, enjoyed and cherished. Such is the magical power of The Datai.

We have been to the Datai 5 times. The establishment is absolute refinement. We had to leave as Malaysia went on lock down before all airports closed. What elegance. First, the Datai staff was calm. The hotel without saying anything lowered the room charge by 75% for the last night and room service was free (outside alcohol). They had no need to do this but just did because it’s the Datai.

We do feel that some of the wildlife has moved on since the renovation. Hopefully, it will come back

I'm possibly not best person to answer having no children, but I would say no, unless you think you want to walk around the resort a lot. There is no need to walk because the fleet of on-call golf buggies can take you anywhere. Having said that, we loved meandering round the resort through the forest watching the birds, lizards and monkeys. There is smooth concrete pavement everywhere for the golf buggies so would be easy to push a stroller if you wanted to. There are some steep sections but these are fairly short. If you're staying in a canopy room, there will be walking through corridors to get to breakfast or the buggy pickup but if you're in a villa, buggies will pickup and dropoff at your door.

I think so, I believe the golf course is separate from the Datai but residents may get special rates. I think the hotel may also run the restaurant at the golf club. I haven’t been able to drag myself away from the Datai in order to find out. The course looks absolutely stunning! Hope this helps.
