Nestled near lush rainforests and pristine beaches, Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Rainforest, Golf & Beach Resort receives applause for its location, though it is considered somewhat isolated by a few. The resort's array of amenities, including various pools and beach activities, coupled with live entertainment, is celebrated by guests, despite the steep prices. While the service garners compliments for its professionalism and attentiveness, there are mixed feelings about the room decor and occasional cleanliness issues. Additionally, some guests feel that the resort's cost does not quite align with the value provided, particularly noting room odors and dampness.

Hotel's Favourite
This was the hotel of choice for us to ring in the new, 2024 year and have joint vacation for 10 family members. We carefully selected it, and it proved to be good!

Location:
About 50 min - 1 hour away from the San Juan airport. Absolutely beautiful section of Puerto Rico, minutes away from the El Yunque National Forest (biggest span of rainforest on the island) and the famous Luquillo beach. Resort has spacious grounds; to get to the hotel, you wind through a big golf course (road has lots and lots of speed humps!)

Rooms/ placement:
Stayed across 4 rooms, mostly on the 4th floor. 2 rooms had views of both the ocean and a large part of the hotel's busiest parts of the grounds - the largest pool. From the room balcony, it was easy to spot family members both in the water (pool) and in lounge chairs.

Beware of high humidity. One of our rooms had a damp floor upon check-in, which made it very slick. Air conditioning the room for 20-30 minutes helped to dry it out. Another room had recurring "sweat stains" on the ceiling. A/C must work around the clock in the rooms to keep humidity under control.

Beach:
Beach is amazing! Walkable both directions for at least 0.5 miles. Shortly to the east is a little river delta/ inlet, and a nearby equestrian school brings riders with horses to that inlet. Also, found a lot of different pretty shells, including sand dollard.
Water was very warm (in January!). There was always a wave, but about half the time in January it was calm enough that the waves wouldn't break at a depth of 4-6 ft (although swimming conditions were always shown with red flag). Swimming is practically impossible; riding the waves is definitely doable. There are explicit warnings at the entrance to the beach about rip currents. One day (out of 7) the water was choppy and brought a bit of seaweed.

Pools:
There are 3 pools total - barside, quiet pool, and main activity pool (with a jacuzzi). The main pool also has a fun waterslide for kids. Iguanas sometimes roam around, and sometimes even get on lounge chairs.
We also loved that you didn't have to race early in the morning to stake chairs. It was easy to find free chairs both by the pool and on the beach at any hour.

Meals/ food:
Since this is the U.S., no meals (not even breakfast) were included in the hotel stay. There are a number of restaurants at Wyndham, including one solely for takeout, but they are very pricey. Breakfast buffet is $35/day or $29/day if you sign up for the duration of your stay. Fridges in rooms are small; no microwaves or any other implements for cooking/ serving food. It's hard to arrange for getting your own food and eating it in the room.
Poolside bars and cantinas are also paid and take a long time between ordering and the food being ready.

Entertainment:
We came around New Year, so there were shows on several nights, but with expensive tickets, especially on New Year's Eve. There is a casino on site. Animals living at the resort provide entertainment too. E.g., there are two macaws in big cages by the front entrance, so guests can interact with them when waiting for their ride/ car.

Last minute trip and worth every penny. Had poolside view on 5th floor and room was clean and quiet. Word of advice, buy souvenir cup at 5 o’clock somewhere and drinks are cheaper. Buy souvenir cup at coffee shop in lobby level $ get free refills. They use paper straws that last all of a minute so if you drink from a straw, buy or bring your own. Palio steakhouse was superb but $$$. Drinks run $12-14. Pool side service was slow. Quiet pool was great for relaxing for those without kids but other pools great for families with lots of activities. Car rental available on site. Ordered room service several times, had problem with late delivery but was given cheese plate as apology With hand written card. Room service called at 9:30 at night and 8:30 in am asking to pick up tray waking us both times which was frustrating. Food at every place was good. Beach clean & security tight. No one bothering you on beach wanting to sell you something but had local artists set up in lobby. All inclusive price was $300 a day more per person which was a bit high. Beautiful clean resort! No transfers from airport to hotel so book prior to going. Local taxi Company was great.

Special thanks to the team at Wyndham Grand Rio Mar. The staff was very friendly and professional and addressed all of our questions/concerns. Everyone wore a mask and there were sanitizing stations everywhere.

Upon arrival, there were strict protocols in place to ensure each guest presented their negative COVID test results before we even entered the hotel. This gave us a good sense of security that all of the guests and staff had taken the right level of precautions.

The hotel was operating at 30% capacity so the pool area and common areas were not crowded at all. Even towards the end of our vacation when there were more people, each family had their own area of the pool to swim without being near other guests.

The staff was very understanding in moving our room to a better view when we checked in so it wasn't obstructed by a pillar. In addition, whenever having room service, they stayed outside the room and were very careful in handling all food, etc.

A few notes for any guests:
1) If you have a rental car, please note there is a charge of $15/day plus tax for the garage.
2) We had breakfast included but that turned out to be vouchers for eggs/pancakes and the normal breakfast menu was not included. You could pay extra for a la carte items if you got tired of eggs/pancakes each day.
3) As time went by, more dining options opened up including Marabella (breakfast), Roots (Lunch/Dinner), 5 O'Clock Somewhere (light food near the pool) and eventually Tiki Hut (other light food options near the other pool).

All in all, a great time for the family and all the credit goes to the staff there!

The Wyndham is a beautiful resort, but we found it lacked attention to detail in many ways. The pool deck was over run by tiny ants, probably because of the food and pieces of fruit (from drinks) that got left on the ground and not cleaned up. I even saw the remains of a s’more on the fire pit one morning that had obviously been there since at least the night before. The pools were cold most of the time and required skimming more often - there were always little bugs and pieces of leaves.

The beach was consistently dirty while we were there. Crushed beer cans, glass, straws, etc were all over. I asked the concierge about it and he blamed the recent rain and told me they did indeed clean the beach. But every day I went out to check the condition and didn’t really want my kids playing on it. There was also a lot of wood and sticks there too, which I found odd and it made me worried the kids would get splinters. One day we went across the bay to Luquillo Beach, which was amazing. It was absolutely pristine and the water was much much calmer. And the food was great. It was disappointing that a public beach that we had to drive to was so much better than the resort we were paying for.

Eating was frustrating at time. The poolside food options (Tiki Hut and 5 O’clock Somewhere had limited food options and were constantly over run by bees and birds. They were also practically the only options if you wanted to eat dinner before 6pm. I have small kids and we like to eat on the early side, which was hard to do.

Probably the worst part though was the smokers. Every time we stepped outside I got a whiff of smoke from somewhere. There were people smoking (outside) at the Tiki Hut restaurant multiple times during one meal and I had to ask the server repeatedly to talk to them. We also encountered people brazenly disregarding the rules and smoking by the Margaritaville pool.

On the positive side the staff were all very friendly and our room was large and great for our needs.

The grounds are beautiful with nice landscaping, walking trails, great pools/beach and of course the Five O'Clock Somewhere bar. Most of the trip we rotated from the beach to the 5 O'Clock Somewhere pool area. Very relaxing at the beach and the pool area was lively with Buffet music and daily pool games. The drinks at the bar were great, nice pours, with attentive and friendly bartenders. The food at the Five O'Clock somewhere bar was also very good. The others pools on the grounds were the main pool with a slide and volley ball for kids and the quiet adult pool with a waterfall. There were also large hot tubs by each of the pool areas.
The room we choose was the most inexpensive and was very modern with a large bathroom and had a rain forest view of the mountains. Only negative of that room is that it faces the main entrance and the cars and work vehicles can get loud during the day and night. Also the room did not have great soundproofing as we can hear people talking in the room next to us. We ordered room service on evening and the Cheese and pepperoni pizza were delicious. Our favorite restaurant on the property was Iguanas that has authentic Puerto Rican food and the the chicken and rice and beef medallions were amazing with huge portions. The staff there was also great and would explain and customize any entree. Overall we loved the resort and will definitely be coming back for future trips. Although next time we will probably choose a pool or ocean view room to avoid the vehicle noise.

we arrived the day after the earthquake in southern PR, and there were no lights! none in the airport, none in the city and no traffic lights either! the drive to the wyndham, which takes about 40 mins, was interesting, and im glad we didnt have to do it in the dark!!! however arriving in the beautiful grounds of the hotel, we were relieved to see that the hotel has its own generator, and lighting wasnt a problem! hoorah!
the hotel is a huge complex, but is quite secluded, and all surrounded by rain forest or beach. it is joined on to the margaritaville hotel, which has a much younger, and more colourful decor and crowd, and i cant deny, while we were very happy with our room and surroundings, we frequented the Its 5 oclock somewhere Bar everyday. the margaritas were to die for, and we almost drank ourselves to that because they served them in a large plastic cup which you kept, and could carry around everywhere, including onto the beach!
the beach is really huge, clean and beautiful, and you only have to walk down for 5 minutes to feel like you are all alone on an island. on the other hand, its a public beach, over which the hotel has no responsibility and so i would recommend you put on bug spray, as its teeming with sand fleas, which will give you an entire set of dominoes on your legs, hands, and, well anything that touches the sand. as you carry these tiny critters into your room on your sandals and bags, you might get bitten in bed, so i recommend you wash your feet and shoes carefully, and brush down your towels and beach bags on the balcony. alternatively just stay by the beautiful pools in the hotel grounds, though then you would be missing out on one of the reasons for staying here...the choice is yours.
the hotel also has a huge choice of restaurants, my favourite of which was the roots coastal kitchen, where we sat at the bar, next to the claw foot bath full of wine, and i ate something which my italian friends would curl their toes over....mac and cheese pizza! it was FAB! nom nom! loved it!
on top of all this, the thing that really made this place for me, was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. everyone was just so nice and happy to help in every way, they were just delightful! from the reception, waiters, staff outside who got us taxis, and barstaff to the sweet ladies who cleaned our room, they were all just lovely.
this was just such a great stay, and while nothing was inexpensive, it was about the same price i would pay in the city i live in, and lets face it, you dont come to somewhere like this to scrimp!
i would love, love, love to return.

My husband & I visited PR for the first time and stayed at the Wyndham (not Margaritaville) for 10 days earlier this month. We did the All-Inclusive Meal/Drink plan which we felt was very worthwhile! Our rooms were cleaned daily (we got moved 2 days in due to noisy neighbors, the hotel was very accommodating). We enjoyed Marbella for breakfast buffet almost daily as well as the coffee bar outside Roots. I made all our dinner reservations several days before arriving at the hotel and we had no issues. Roots food was just OK, but Iguanas was GREAT! When we ate and drank during the day it was mainly at 5'oclock somewhere which we enjoyed but we did also try the Tiki Hut. I would say the 5'oclock bar is better both for food/drinks and service.
We used the spa while there and found it very enjoyable. Again we made our reservations before our arrival to get the day/time we wanted.
Part of the All-Inclusive package was a round of golf which we also did. My husband really enjoyed it and they let me ride along to take pics. He said the round played fast due to it not being that busy. We also booked our tee time before arrival.
We used both the pools and the beach but spent more time on the beach enjoying the umbrellas and chairs provided with towels from the pool. The water was warm and we felt safe venturing out quite a ways with it only coming up about waist high.
We went to Luquilla one night for dinner via taxi which was fine.
We really didn't have the issues some spoke of on other reviews. I think making reservations for things before arrival is key due to covid. The one thing we didn't do was pre-arrange any excursions and once we figured out what we wanted to do there was no availability. That is the only thing I would say I would have done differently.
The all inclusive is expensive but we made it worth it with drinks especially considering the taxes, gratuity etc.

disclaimer - we stayed at one of the vacation rentals within the resort complex but went down to the resort on multiple occasions. this review is for the location and the few things we used. We were very happy that we picked the luquillo area to stay instead of san juan. wyndham is , i believe, the larger resort in the area and the location is very good. large area with good beach access.
pros - the staff was always cleaning up the pools in the morning and evening both at the beach club and the main resort.
resort main area was nice and clean
lots of restaurants in the resort
very close to a very good number of kiosks with peurto rican food
10 min from the rain forest which is fantastic!!
20-30 min to the nearest bio luminescence bay (closer than san juan for sure)
not as over crowded as san juan (we stayed there for 2 days)
good beaches within the resort
security always present
hubby used the tennis courts and played with the pro there and enjoyed it

as noted above, cannot commnet on the actual service in the resort itself.

“Incredible experience!” We drove up to the hotel and were greeted by very welcoming employees, they helped us unload our bags and due to Covid-19 they disinfected all of our belongings. The staff was great throughout my entire stay. I would also like to hive a special mention to our bar tender named Xavier Chevere, he was very pleasurable. He was very welcoming and kind. This employee was very attentive to detail and had impeccable customer service. He went above and beyond to make our stay an amazing one. Even with COVID precautions the service and room quality was impeccable. Our room was excellent, just by looking at it you could tell someone had taken their time to disinfected everything. Every employee had a mask on, but they were still very engaging, friendly, and willing to speak. The resort had amazing places to eat. It had a wide variation of different foods to eat. This was one of my favorite stays ever!!! I definitely recommend.

This was our first time at this property, and our first time visiting Puerto Rico outside of San Juan. We would definitely return. We loved how this hotel had some resort-like amenities but wasn't a non-stop carnival of music and entertainment. There are some activities available, but they are low-key (like iguana feeding). It's fairly quiet, music at a minimum, which is what we were looking for. We rented a car and enjoyed the quick drives to El Yunque, Farjado, kayaking in the bioluminescent bay, visiting the food kiosks at nearby Luquillo (go to Kiosk 20 and have the mofongo!!), and a day trip to San Juan. We stayed Saturday to Saturday, and were surprised at the lack of crowds here. We had no trouble getting pool chairs or beach chairs, or restaurants. Crowds picked up midweek and we did need dinner reservations at that point, but it still didn't feel overrun. Breakfast was lovely every morning, and all wait staff, especially Omar and Juan, provided excellent service and good conversation and local sightseeing advice. (I personally found the wait staff more helpful than the concierge). We booked our activities online and did not go through the concierge. The beautiful sandy beach just steps away from the pool was lovely. Rip current warnings and rough looking surf every day made us skittish about going in too far, but we did go in the water a bit at times, and just being on the beach was entirely pleasant. Everyone was just lovely; it was hard to leave. We loved our room (ocean view junior suite); we were pleasantly surprised to find it had a mini fridge, where we could keep our water cold and even store leftovers from the restaurants. We had a rollaway cot in the room for our child, which we preferred to the pull out sofa; it was very comfortable and just some creative furniture rearranging made it work just fine. The entire property is impeccably clean, and we came back to a gleaming room every day. There are parents at the front door, and a friendly iguana roams the pool area. Beautiful landscaping all over the grounds made for pleasant walking. I would like to add one more rave to our list of rave reviews: we have a child with food allergies (nuts, sesame), which always adds a level of anxiety to our travel. This hotel was the best we've been to in the region for allergy awareness. The wait staff and cooks were understanding, reassuring, and able to accommodate us. The buffets did not have nuts all over the place like you see in some places. We saw the cooks get chocolate chips for the waffles from a separate container. The menus do not have many or any dishes with nuts on them. We deeply appreciate these efforts and wish more hotels would follow suit. While we did avoid the ice cream (there are pistachio and peanut butter flavors next to the others), it was wonderful to see our child enjoy all his meals, and to be able to confidently eat things like pancakes and waffles. Thank you!

It's a public beach, not resort property, so you can bring your own drinks (including beer). I did last time I was there and saw others doing it as well. It saves a lot of money to go this route! I think it would be frowned upon to do this around the pool however (unless it's on the sly).
