We are currently in Cuba and staying at the Melia Jardines Del Rey. We are here April 11 to April 19 2024. We connected with Paulino via Facebook before heading here. We are avid bird watchers. Paulino picked us up in his 1954(perhaps 1952) Bell Air at 7am and took us on a tour through Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. He offers 2 options, a 4 excursion through the island and 8 hours adding on 4 hours through the main land. The cost was $80 Canadian.

As bird watchers this was fantastic, we saw over 50 species of bird, including nearly 40 first time birds. Paulino was incredibly knowledgeable about the birds, their habitats, migration and other interesting information about the area. He showed us features such as the abandoned airport (shocker there are lots of birds), agave trees in full bloom and the aftermath of the hurricane nearly 7 years ago.

We would highly recommend this experience, even if you are not an avid bird watcher, just to see the fantastic wildlife.

If anyone has any specific questions feel free to message me directly at nwtech@tbaytel.net.

Our only regret was not committing to the full 8 hours, which could be split over two days.

For what ever reasons the photos won't upload in Cuba but you see several on instagram @gigglepigx

    Cheers

    Jason

Spent a really wonderful day with the crew - and went snorkeling too, with sea urchins, live coral, and some really beautiful fish. Lunch and drinks included - lunch was really great with a choice of Chicken or Lobster, salads and veggies, music and laughter

We attended a dinner show here through Air Canada. The food was good and the "international" show was ok. I would have preferred a Cuban show.

The dancing afterwards was fun for the younger crowd, but we took a cab back to our resort early. Lots of strobe lights.

The bathrooms were nasty, especially compared to the cleanliness at our resort.

We cane here whilst staying at the melia. Coach picks you up from the lobby and drops you back off. This place is very good. We got all the treatments including the mud wrap, Cleopatra's bath, as well as using the facilities. An amazing view as well outside looking over onto the sea. The price was very good and included a massage which I felt could have been a little better

    Every night has been amazing!!
the days are filled with lots of activities and dancing. if you’re looking for a place to have a few drinks and dance until 1am with staff and the few other drunk visitors, do to the lobby and you will get that! this place has been amazing and i wish i could’ve stayed another week to continue to experience the culture and create stronger friendships with the people i’ve met here!

We signed up for a two city tour which included a speed boat ride through the mangrove swamps and a visit to a crocodile farm. It was a great way to look at Cuba and the guide and driver were accommodating and knowledgeable. I would recommend this to get a real perspective.

We spend a week kiting in Cayo Coco and also took some lessons with Sergey and Carlos.
We loved the casual but professional atmosphere. From the onset on we were treated more like friends than clients, exchanging kite war stories and sharing kites:-). (I brought my own stuff).

The school is located directly on a wonderful beach with good wind and some fun waves. The equipment is first-class and the attention superb.

A great thank you, especially to Carlos, who more than once found my board floating in the blue waves....

All-in-all a must go if you plan to learn or improve your skills.

We came as guests and left as friends

Hop on Hop off bus is a full day excursion from Muthu Colonial hotel
    - stops at every hotel along the road. Then stops at a beach for an hour. Beach was very typical to beach at our hotel. I didn’t see the hype here for this beach. Did have a restaurant/bar and wash rooms
    - Stops at “the Mall”. Very limited shopping and noted that all prices were the same as in our hotel shops. Maybe 5 or 6 stores
    - Would not recommend the long ride if you had children
    - Was told by our hotel staff that the bus could be paid for with cash or credit cards. Ticket seller would only accept credit cards. Ticket seller asked if this was our last stop when we got off the bus, at the beach, at the Mall and upon return to hotel. And asked for us to return our tickets. I said for 5 dollars they could buy them back, driver countered my offer at 3 dollars. We kept them as souvenirs. Other riders we spoke to on the bus stated they had no problem with buying with cash. They got on bus latter in Day. Believe they were going to resell our tickets again for any cash purchases of a ticket

August 2019: I contacted the school for 2pax x 1week kite equipment rental, total 980$
They pushed me to buy online (via a Canadian site) in advance despite of any weather forecast, with such messages:
“but you will need to reserve the equipment online in our web site before your arrival to Cuba.”
“you have to book the rental 2 weeks in advance to be sure it will be ready at the school.”
“During the week if you can't ride because the weather is not good we will return the full amount to your credit card.”

When my son and I arrived, we found very few, very old, all taped kites of various brand (not Core and Fone as advertised on the web). Bars mismatched and peeled. Boards with torned straps and broken fins.

In total, 1x17mq Core (2017), 1x14mq Fone (2017), 1x13mq Slingshot (2018, left during lunch at the sun by the instructor the first day and broke out), 1x12mq beginner level, 1x12 under repairing, a couple of 9mq. These were all kites available for 2 persons even if I paid in advance “to be sure it will be ready at the school”.

The first 3 days there was light wind as normal in August (3 days with an average of 13 knots) but with some good equipment, we could have some fun. I was obliged to use the 17 all three days (with lighter and stronger wind), my son used 12 one day, 14 the other day, and one day no other kite was available because the 14 was used for a lesson. The remaing 4 days the school was closed (for no wind), but the instructor left key available to use a SUP (we used 1 hour). We had no chance to discuss any refund locally, because the instructor (apologizing for the very poor quality of the equipment) suggested to write to the boss (never seen locally) via mail and the school was closed when we left.

And when I wrote (and wrote again) to the online contact to have at least 50% of refund… surprise! For mr. Leandro Jonte (the boss, I guess) all was perfect! Material was regularly maintained and fixed and it work perfectly. He said I received a VIP service, even free SUP. I broke the kites. And if I really used poor equipment (I provided photos), the photos I sent were not part of the School equipment but I choosed the personal instructor equipment. Ahahah! Very creative!

Story short, I did not get any refund, or any additional reply. So please avoid to make the same mistake I did trusting them. I threw away 980$. What a pity!
