Top ways to experience Mercado de San Antón and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

We were thrilled to secure a table at the restaurant on the roof after searching a long time for a pleasant spot to relax and enjoy a drink. The location was perfect for lounging in the sun, but the awful Europop music detracted a little.

Not sure if we went at the wrong date and time but it looked abandoned and some food looked like too long waiting in the window to be eaten/ordered… perhaps best would be to give it time to conclude the rebuilding works before heading there. So many other places worth visiting prior to this market…

Just when we thought our gastronomic adventures in Madrid had reached their peak, La Manuela Grill Stand beckoned us for one final act, a savory serenade that promised to fill our already brimming bellies with yet more foodie delights. Situated in a bustling corner of Madrid that hums with life and the sizzling sounds of grilling, La Manuela was our curtain call for a culinary journey we’d never forget.

The menu? Simple yet irresistible. Patatas fritas for two—a staple that no self-respecting food aficionado could pass up, especially when they're crisped to perfection with just the right sprinkle of salt to whisper sweet nothings to your taste buds.

But why stop there? Our eyes, bigger than our already full bellies, were drawn to the siren songs of atun Rojo, Ternera, and PAVO. Each dish was a marvel, a testament to the grill’s alchemy that could transform simple ingredients into gold. The atun Rojo was seared to a tender blush, the Ternera was a juicy reverie of beefy goodness, and the PAVO? Oh, the PAVO was a triumph, a poultry paean that made us wonder why turkey had ever been relegated to the realm of festive fare alone.

Together, they formed a symphony of flavors, a chorus that sang harmonies of smoke and sizzle, of sea and land. And as we tucked in, it wasn’t just our bellies that were topped up, but our hearts too, filled to the brim with the joy of shared plates and the unspoken bond that forms over a meal truly savored.

Service? Imagine a ballet of efficiency and warmth, where each dish was delivered with a smile that said, "Yes, we know you’re full, but trust us, it’s worth it." And worth it, it was. Each bite was a reaffirmation of why we travel, why we explore—not just for the sights and sounds, but for the tastes that linger long after we’ve returned home.

As we rolled away from La Manuela, our bellies full and our spirits lifted, it was clear that this wasn’t just lunch; it was an encore, a final standing ovation for a city that knows how to dine, to live, to celebrate the everyday as though it were a feast. So, here’s to La Manuela Grill Stand, a beacon of culinary delight in Madrid, and a must-visit for those who believe that to travel is to eat, and to eat is to live. Cheers, and bon appétit!

My twin brother Stephen and I were wandering around the Centro district of Madrid and as temperatures climbed over 100 degrees Fahrenheit we ducked into Mercado De San Anton, been here before on previous holidays to Madrid ,always had a great time and so it proved on our latest visit.
This is a superb mercado set over three floors with a great rooftop terrace ,lots of pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants and some boutique shops ,we enjoyed a great meal in Juancho's BBQ,beers in La Taberna De La Ancha and Bar 4 ,we had a great time ,it's very popular and when we visited was packed and this on a Wednesday ,if you're planning a holiday to Madrid it's a mercado to most definitely check out .

A great off-the-beaten path mercado -- not crowded with tourists. This market is two levels and in the basement there is a supermarket. Some of the stalls were closed but at the stalls where we did get food, it was all super yummy. A much more civilized place than San Miguel. There is ample seating.

A pleasant neighborhood market, with various kiosks offering ready-to-eat food and ingredients like fish and vegetables. Comfortable for a drink and tapas. Also a larger supermarket in the lower floor.

Not fancy enough to go far out of your way, but honestly more pleasant than Mercado San Miguel, near Plaza Mayor, which has become a crowded tourist trap.

Also enjoyed Mercado de La Boqueria in Barcelona and Mercat Central in Valencia. They're real working markets, so they're usually wrapping up no later than 2 p.m.

Mercado de San Anton was relatively small and a mix of tapa's bars and food sellers. All looked reasonable quality and busy and worth a visit. The area around the market was quite interesting and a little different

The charcuterie counters are wonderfully attractive but the food offering is a bit a let down especially for the seating environment. The food is good but the whole place is lacking atmosphere…been once is enough for me!

I’m a big fan of this concept of old markets which have been converted into communal dining areas with several stalls selling local produce and I always search it out if there is one in the town or city I am visiting. My problem is that I have visited some excellent ones, such as the Mercado Centrale in Florence and the Time Out Market in Lisbon.
Sadly this one is nowhere near on the scale of those. There are some decent outlets doing interesting dishes but the number is limited and there just isn’t enough seating on the two floors to accommodate the people it attracts at busy periods.
If you find yourself nearby then by all means pop in and take a look, but it is certainly not worth a special journey.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with this place but there's nothing that special either. When we came here, we were about 2.5 months into our 6 months of living in Spain and we hadn't been to something like this before (we went to a few after this, in other cities). It's a cool concept - having multiple cuisines and places to grab food within one building, with communal seating for everyone. While the main attractions of Madrid are spaced out, this one was one of the farther Northern (specifically North-Western) places we visited.

We came here in the evening of May 18th, 2022 (a Wednesday). We initially tried to go to the rooftop but while it wasn't full, we had our twin almost 2 year old toddlers with us and the only seats they had available were the taller tables/chairs. So we opted to go to the main eating area and grab some food there. Sorry to say that our uncultured children much preferred our potato chips we had brought with us than much of the other food we purchased while there. The food was fairly good but not anywhere close to the best that we had while in Madrid/Spain.

They did have a nice large working elevator that we utilized with our stroller to get to the various floors.
