The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

    Wonderful sherry
I've visited here a few times. Cash only. Wide range of sherries, all very sensibly priced. Feels very old school, walls are brown, looking aged. I don't know how old the bar is really, but it's a wonderful place in a warm afternoon for a few sherries.

A visit to La Venecia is a must!
We loved our visits to this sherry bar. Great bar with dusty bottles of sherry covering shelves behind the bar. Sepia coloured walls that don’t look like they’ve been decorated since it opened. 5 sherries to choose from. Only other drink available is water. The waiter helped us choose sherries to try. We preferred the dry sherries manzanilla-fino & pasada. Each round of drinks came with peanuts, olives or crisps. Other tapas were available to buy. The place had a great atmosphere & was a mixed crowd of locals and tourists.

    A Must for Jerez
Reviews seem to be mixed across two duplicate entries for this small Sherry bar. If you want a friendly place that’s welcoming to tourists - move along. This is an old, somewhat infamous, local haunt to get your copa de Jerez and some nibbles. For that, it is excellent. Pick your style, that’s it - poured from the casks along the wall. Pick from a few nibbles as well, sit down, and just enjoy. (Keep your camera in your pocket, as they insist.). Just a wonderful vibe, and the traditional snacks are excellent. The achoa are to die for, by the way. As a Sherry lover, I sought this place out specifically for that, and the two of us could have spent much longer sitting in there sipping away. And yes - excellent Sherries.

Very old bar good atmosphere, miserable bar staff all part of the get up. Mainly sherry drinks out of the barrel, the bill chalked up on the bar and no tips allowed all part of the fun.

The waiter/ bar tender was the rudest person we met in Spain. He constantly yelled at people. Don’t waist your time. Two people in our party don’t drink alcohol so he wouldn’t serve any of us. I honestly think he just wanted us to leave. Very unwelcoming-

I can see why people would be attracted to this place, there’s something about it, however, we did not find that something!

Incredibly dark, stupidly dark I’d say, and I’d lend that description to the staff, who were ‘mysteriously dark’ ie as if they weren’t there when we spoke to them. Personally I’d say they were rude, but maybe that’s a persona that’s been honed, and adds to the ‘character’ of the place which, I have to say was interesting.

Would I recommend? Hmmm maybe, but I wouldn’t hang around too long, way too dark and unfriendly, but it’s interesting I guess, and if you like sherry (I do but not any they had) that’s a bonus.

I’d say this is the kind of place which locals frequent, and ‘out of towners’ don’t get the same attentiveness.

La Venencia isn't a trendy hip tapas bar. If you want cocktails or cañas or vermouth, you will have to go elsewhere. They serve sherry here, that's it. So, if you don't like sherry, don't go. If you have never had good sherry before, though, give it a try. They have different kinds, from very dry to sweet. I am a huge fan of the manzanilla. It costs 2 euros per glass and is delicious.

The charm of the place is in its history and its unchanging character. Yes, it is old. Yes, it is small and a little bit dark. The furniture is old. It looks like it hasn't been painted since 1934. For me, that gives it a wonderful atmosphere. It's a trip back in time to old working class Madrid. It's not dirty or run down. It's just not glitzy and modern. It's traditional. I love that they don't try to change who they are, and they remain true to their roots. This is honestly one of my favorite places in Madrid.

The bartenders are old school, professional, serious. They do what they're paid to do and don't depend on tips. They are attentive, but not fawning. I've been here many times and never found them to be rude. But they aren't going to stand around and chat with you all day. The bar attracts a lot of local patrons as well as tourists. Given how busy it gets at times, I'm amazed at how the bartenders manage to take care of so many people and not loose their patience.

It's the policy of the bar to not allow photos of the interior. It annoys some people, but there's something to be said for living in the moment and enjoying the time spent here without documenting it all on instagram. Put your phone away, it won't kill you.

I prefer going mid day during the week when it's not quite so crowded. You can sit and read or talk to friends over a glass or two of sherry and spend a very nice hour here. They serve some very basic food to go along with the sherry (olives, cheese, ham). Don't go expecting to make a night of it here and have a full meal. Go to for an hour or so and enjoy it for what it is. If you are looking for more variety in food and drink, try the Cervecería Alemana on the Plaza Santa Ana right around the corner. It's more of a typical Madrid bar/ tapas place and also has a historical feel to it.

Extremely rude service, they definitely do not appreciate tourists. The place also smells really bad, not clean. We ordered a vermouth, that’s basically all they have. I am assuming there were a lot of people because its very cheap. There are many better tapas / bars in the area that are worth your money. Would not reccomend at all.

Have you ever tried Sherry? If not, and you’d like to, this is the place! Do you already like Sherry, this is also the place for you!
We were seated in the bar downstairs amongst the Sherry casks and enjoyed 2 glasses of Sherry each, some cheese and some olives.
It was a great setting that allowed us to fully immerse ourselves into the world of Sherry.
