An interesting pit-stop to stretch legs inbetween the ferry port in Sidney and Duncan. The Kinsol Trestle Bridge is an old free-standing timber frame railway bridge which has been restored. The bridge is a short walk through the trees from the parking lot and is an impressive structure. There is a display of old photos and information to explain its history.

Work the trip out to see it. The walk in is gravel. Once at the bridge you can walk over, under and around. It is interesting to see.

Work the trip out to see it. The walk in is gravel. Once at the bridge you can walk over, under and around. It is interesting to see.

Looking for things to see between Victoria and Tofino I found Kinsol Trestle. After doing some research I decided to use the entrance from the North Parking Lot (just be aware there is at least 5kms of a narrow, winding dirt road to get to the parking lot). It is about a 150m short flat walk along the Cowichan Valley Trail to get to the Trestle Bridge from the parking lot. The bridge is very impressive and well maintained. It was completed in 1920, measures 44ms (144ft) high and is 188ms (617ft) long. I am scared of heights but I felt very comfortable walking along the bridge and even taking photos from the sides. We took some little trails down to the bottom and side to get some lovely photos. There is a very nice undercover picnic area. We did see some bike riders and walkers using the trail and I can imagine on a weekend it would get busy.

Always a great walk and scenic sights! Very flat wide path suitable for anyone walking....no hills....A lazy 15-25 min walk each way and a rebuilt trestle w/ lots of historical info. Combine it w/ an afternoon trip to Cowichan Valley or Shawnigan Lake.

It’s a bit of a walk to get to the Trestle from the South Parking lot, but it’s a nice wide, level path. The Trestle itself has been beautifully restored. There is a railing on the top, and you get incredible views from the top. Luckily, it was the winter season so visitors are fewer, which means you may be able to get some good pictures. There’s some good information and pictures of the Trestle and it’s restoration on the North side, and paths that will take you to the bottom so you get a true sense of the size and scale of the Bridge. This is a must see when on Vancouver Island.

Take the adventure and make sure you go to the underside of the bridge and enjoy the view upwards and towards the water from the concrete base section. Follow the path on the left side of the covered display area. It is more gradual and safer instead of the straight down rocky approach.

We were the only ones in the parking lot when we started our hike to the trestle. Practically had the place to ourselves when we reached the trestle. Truly a magnificent structure which we learned more about at the Shawinigan Museum. We hiked across the trestle and down to the river. We would have like to have crossed to the other side but it was a pretty steep climb into the brush with no trail in sight. Walking across the trestle the other way gives you a different perspective. It was busier on our way back so try to get there early so you can enjoy the place in peace.

We recently visited and found it very interesting. We hiked (1km) from the closest parking lot to the trestle and enjoyed climbing underneath to see the support network of wooden ties. We plan to return with our bikes to see the other trestle's on the Cowichan Valley Trail as well.

Coming up from Victoria take a left off the TCH at Shawnigan Lake turn off. Follow till W Shawnigan Lake Rd turn left, travel till you see Renfrew Road turn left and continue until you see Glen Eagles Rd and turn right. Kinsol Trestle signs are easy to see along the route.
