OpenAI

OpenAI kicked off an AI revolution with DALL-E and ChatGPT, making the organization the epicenter of the artificial intelligence boom. Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI became a story unto itself when Altman was briefly fired and then brought back after pressure from staff and Microsoft, an investor and close partner.

OpenAI has one less lawsuit to worry about.

Open source developers dismissed OpenAI from their 2022 lawsuit alleging that it violated copyright law by reproducing their code without attribution.

As Bloomberg Law writes, the lawsuit will continue against GitHub and Microsoft (although without the Digital Millennium Copyright Act claims that the judge dismissed this month).

OpenAI wants in on the AI chip business.

According to The Information, OpenAI is in discussion with Broadcom and other semiconductor designers about developing its own artificial intelligence chip to address shortages in its supply chain and reduce dependency on Nvidia. OpenAI has apparently also hired former Google chip staffers.

Bloomberg previously reported in January that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was planning to raise billions of dollars to set up a network of chip factories.

OpenAI partners with Los Alamos National Laboratory

OpenAI announced that it is teaming up with Los Alamos National Laboratory to explore how advanced AI models, such as GPT-4o, can safely aid in bioscientific research. I’m a bit disappointed because this was the plot of the science fiction horror book I always wanted to write.

The goal is to test how GPT-4o can help scientists perform tasks in a lab using vision and voice modalities.

When AI models are past their prime.

A recent study found that if a coding problem put before ChatGPT (using GPT-3.5) existed on coding practice site LeetCode before its 2021 training data cutoff, it did a very good job generating functional solutions, writes IEEE Spectrum.

But when the problem was added after 2021, it sometimes didn’t even understand the questions and its success rate seemed to fall off a cliff, underscoring AI’s limitations without enough data.

Time is also partnering with OpenAI.

It joins other media companies like News Corp, Axel Springer, The Financial Times, Vox Media, The Atlantic, and The Associated Press in licensing content for training AI models like ChatGPT.

Financial details for the deal have not been disclosed. Time COO Mark Howard says:

“This partnership with OpenAI advances our mission to expand access to trusted information globally as we continue to embrace innovative new ways of bringing Time’s journalism to audiences globally.”

Apple has talked about AI partnerships with Meta and a few others.

At WWDC, Apple announced a deal with OpenAI to make ChatGPT available for certain tasks on iPhones with iOS 18 and other devices (as long as you aren’t in the EU). Execs also mentioned Google Gemini, but the list doesn’t end there, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In addition to Google and Meta, AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity also have been in discussions with Apple to bring their generative AI to Apple Intelligence, said people familiar with the talks.

OpenAI exec: “Some creative jobs maybe will go away, but maybe they shouldn’t have been there in the first place.”

During a recent talk at Dartmouth’s school of engineering, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said the quiet part out loud. I’ll let you watch and be the judge:

OpenAI’s business is booming.

The company is on track to make about $3.4 billion in revenue this year, which is about double what it brought in last year, according to a new report by The Information.

CEO Sam Altman reportedly told employees that $200 million of that revenue is the cut OpenAI gets from Microsoft selling its models through Azure. That means the vast majority of OpenAI’s revenue is coming from ChatGPT subscriptions and its own developer platform.

OpenAI CTO chats board structure, AGI, and Apple Deal.

I’m at Fortune’s MPW dinner in San Francisco, where OpenAI CTO Mira Murati had a quick, wide-ranging conversation about the state of the company.

What I found most interesting was her comments on the weird board structure: The previous non-profit board structure didn’t have accountability to anyone but themselves, she said. That is the old board that ousted CEO Sam Altman.

Elon Musk’s response to the Apple + OpenAI partnership feels overblown.

Musk, who founded xAI, said that “if Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies,” and called that integration “an unacceptable security violation.”

Apple and OpenAI have implemented precautions, with OpenAI saying that “requests are not stored by OpenAI.” Still, Musk might make visitors check their Apple devices. Will Windows devices need to be checked, too?

OpenAI adds two new executives.

Kevin Weil, a Facebook product veteran, is joining in the newly-created role of chief product officer. Ex-Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar is also joining as chief financial officer.

“Sarah and Kevin bring a depth of experience that will enable OpenAI to scale our operations, set a strategy for the next phase of growth, and ensure that our teams have the resources they need to continue to thrive,” CEO Sam Altman says.

Apple is widely expected to announce a partnership with OpenAI at WWDC today. CEO Sam Altman has already been spotted on the ground at Apple HQ as people arrive for the keynote. More to come very soon.
