Weather forecast

Saturday will be dry to begin with, with sun over western Scotland and rain moving north from Cornwall. By evening most of southern England will be under a band of rain.

The rain will linger on into Sunday, and temperatures in London should be relatively cool with a high of 10C. Further north there will be plenty of cloud cover, but less rain.

Monday is forecast to be wet in the morning in the South East, although the rain will ease in the afternoon. Tuesday is expected to be warmer, but most of Britain should see showers.

Traffic and travel

With up to four million people expected to be travelling around Britain this weekend, the country’s roads and railways will be under considerable strain.

The AA warns that traffic will build up on Saturday, particularly before 4pm, but should ease over the next three days. It picks out the M3 in Hampshire, the M6 in Staffordshire and Cheshire and the western arc of the M25 as notable choke points.

Transport for London advises the public not to drive into London unless it is absolutely necessary. It also suggests that those taking public transport in London should plan all journeys well in advance and be aware of extensive road and bridge closures in the centre of the capital.

Some bus routes will be disrupted or cancelled, and 15 Barclays cycle hire docking stations around the Thames will be out of action between Sunday and Wednesday.

For Underground and Overground closures, see the Diamond Jubilee Weekend guide in our Weekend Section.
