Newspaper wars: La Presse invests millions in free iPad-only edition

Montreal paper owned by Power Corp. believes subscribers will migrate to free digital version, funded by advertisers, creating a new model for the struggling industry.

La Presse+ offers readers of its print edition a more extensive and interactive reading experience paper says will attract readers and advertisers alike. Montreal’s La Presse newspaper is the biggest French-language broadsheet in North America.


MONTREAL—Montreal La Presse believes it has found the winning formula to offset declining revenues that are crippling North American newspapers.

After three years of development and $40 million of expenses, the French-language daily is launching a free-subscription digital edition of the paper Thursday. For now, it will be available exclusively on iPad.
