Life these days is pretty hectic, but even the busiest person has to find time to eat. With the 16-piece Popit! Plastic Food Storage Container set, packing a snack or meal couldn’t be simpler. Airtight and microwave-safe, the food storage containers can be thrown in your bag and zapped when you get to work. And for those with kiddos, the containers mean easy access to light zoo or beach nibbles. We put our Popit! set to the test, filling the containers with all sorts of food and testing them in the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. Keep reading for our review of their performance.

Design: Snaps into place

The Popit! set comes with eight different containers in 3-, 6-, 9-, 15-, 19-, 28-, 37-, and 47-ounce varieties. On the bottom of each tupperware, you’ll find the equivalent cup measurement so you’ll know ahead of time if your food will fit or not. With such an array of capacities, we found that the set efficiently stored leftover pasta, portion-sized servings of homemade pesto, and sliced cucumber for easy salad fixings. They also stack nicely, so you can streamline your fridge organization.

The Popit! containers feature air-tight, semi-opaque lids which are easy to snap on and off. In fact, save for the 47-ounce option, you can pop the top on—clicking all four of the sealing tabs—with just one hand. Since the containers and lids are see-through, you can tell what’s inside before grabbing a container from the cabinet or fridge.

Since each container is a different size, matching it to its correct lid proves simple. Of course, if you own multiple tupperware sets things can get a bit more daunting as Popit! branding is featured only on the lids and not the containers.

Material: The best plastic around

We’re always a bit hesitant to buy plastic food containers, but Popit! uses a BPA- and PVC-free mix of polypropylene that’s resistant to leaching. This material is FDA approved and extremely durable, as well. Due to the thick (yet oh-so-light) plastic, the containers are also safe for use in the dishwasher, microwave, and freezer.

Heating Capacity: Zaps like a charm

One great thing about these plastic containers is that their exterior doesn’t hold onto heat. That means you can reach into the microwave and grab your freshly zapped soup without scalding your hand. Of course, that also means heat leaves the dish faster, so if you forgot said bowl of soup in the microwave for a few minutes after the timer buzzed, you may need to heat it again.

One great thing about these plastic containers is that their exterior doesn’t hold onto heat.

Overall, the containers spread heat out evenly around the food. When we heated up leftover sesame chicken with broccoli, there weren’t any hot or cold spots to worry about. You do have to be careful not to place the lid in the microwave, and warnings (in three languages) about doing so are plastered around the top. That means if you microwave butter for a minute in order to melt it for banana bread, you may want to cover it with something else.

Care: Dishwasher friendly

Whether you want to clean the containers by hand or throw them in the dishwasher, you’ll find they hold up well to washing. The trickiest part to clean is the crevice around the lid’s seal but so long as you avoid overfilling your containers, you can mostly avoid this.

Price: Super affordable

This 16-piece set goes for just $20, but the low price doesn’t equate to low quality. In fact, the leak-proof set is made with durable BPA- and PVC-free plastic that’s safe to use in the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. Other sets of this size—with airtight seals—typically go for $30 and up, so we consider these a steal.

Competition: A lot of storage options

Rubbermaid Brilliance Leak-Proof Food Storage Containers: Rubbermaid’s 10-piece container set also costs $20 but it doesn’t offer as many size varieties and comes with one less container than Popit!’s set. Included in the Rubbermaid set is two 1.3-cup containers, two 3.2-cup containers, one 9.6-cup container, and five corresponding lids. Rubbermaid’s containers also offer an airtight seal and you can actually hear the air being sealed in as you close the lid. The best part of this set is that it comes with a lifetime warranty—a big deal in the plastic world.

Plasutil Food Storage Containers: Thanks to rainbow lids and snappy side tabs, this nine-piece set really pops. Aside from dashes of festive color, Plasutil’s set is almost identical to Popit!’s in terms of shape, price, durability, and ease of use. While the container sizes aren’t as varied, it does come with one extra container.

AmazonBasics Glass Food Storage Containers: AmazonBasic’s glass storage container set is a great deal; it comes with seven containers (in four different sizes) for just $22. Like the other storage container bundles we’ve mentioned, Amazon’s option is BPA-free, leakproof, and FDA approved. Like the Popit! set, you can’t microwave the lids but you can freeze the whole container and clean it in the dishwasher.

Final Verdict

Yes, buy it.

With a $20 price tag and great performance there’s little reason to skip this set. Between the lightweight plastic, leak-proof lids, and ability to use the containers in the microwave, dishwasher, and freezer, it’s the best of all storage container worlds.
