Don’t settle for plastic food storage containers just because they’re cheap. Instead, consider slightly more expensive glass sets that will outlast them in the end. On paper, Glasslock’s 18-Piece Assorted Oven-Safe Container Set checks all the right boxes: It’s oven safe, microwave safe, and abides by the three R’s—reduce, reuse, and recycle. To see if the containers performed as admirably as described, we picked up a set and put them to use. Read on for our review of Glasslock’s design, material, heating capacity, and more.

Design: Classic containers

It’s easy to confuse the simple design of Glasslock’s storage containers with the well-known brand Pyrex. Like offerings from its more-popular cousin, this 18-piece set proves thick, sturdy, and completely see-through, so you always know which goodies you’ve stowed in the fridge or pantry.

The plastic lids also remain simple with the logo and warnings lightly etched in. Each features four snapping closures and a durable gasket to help keep air out and liquids in. While the lids and containers are good looking, it can be a little tough affix the lid and pop the tabs down because of their airtight nature. After a few uses, however, we found they were easier to secure.

This 18-piece set proves thick, sturdy, and completely see-through, so you always know which goodies you’ve stowed in the fridge or pantry.

The 18-piece set includes a variety of container sizes in rectangle, square, and circle forms. You’ll find various 6.3-, 3.5-, 3.3-, 3.1-, 1.6-, 1.5-, and 0.7-cup containers. All containers of the same size stack well together, slightly locking into place thanks to grooves on the lid; this allowed us to efficiently store them in our fridge and cabinets.

The smaller containers proved great for on-the-go snacks like blueberries, peanuts, and sunflower seeds. The larger containers proved too heavy to tote around, but they did well storing leftover chili. And, if you’re heading to a potluck, the 6.3-cup container makes a snazzy holder for brownies or freshly baked cookies.

Material: High quality glass

Glasslock’s thick, clear containers are made from a combination of silica, soda ash, limestone, and other materials while the lids are made from polypropylene. The glass is 100 percent recyclable, and odor and stain-resistant. We stored garlicky sauces and pungent leftover Thai food and found no residual scents after a quick wash.

Heating Capacity: Oven and microwave friendly

Glasslock containers distribute heat evenly in both the oven and microwave; we reheated a casserole and found no hot or cool spots. Since the glass retains more heat than plastic containers, we do suggest using oven mitts when removing containers from either appliance.

On the flip side, the containers are also safe for use in the freezer. To avoid breakage, Glasslock just suggests filling your containers to no more than 70 percent capacity. They also advise against moving a container straight from the freezer to oven as extreme fluctuations in temperature can cause the container to crack or shatter. Instead, let it thaw on the counter first.

Care: Simple scrub

Place the containers anywhere in the dishwasher but make sure the lids are only in the top rack. If you don’t have a dishwasher, you can also wash them by hand and leave them out to air dry. Either way, the Glasslock containers hold up well and are pretty easy to clean. One small caveat comes in the form of water spots and fingerprints—both which show up easily. If you want perfectly clear sides with no marks, consider hand drying.

The second small issue we encountered was food getting stuck in the crevices of the lid and gasket. This feature is great for keeping air out and food in, but it’s a little tough to clean. To avoid getting gunk in there in the first place, try not to overfill your containers.

Price: Good deal

Glass storage containers can often be bought a la carte for $5 to $8 a pop. Glasslock’s 18-piece set comes in around $40, so each container costs roughly $4.50. Given the set’s attractive design and stellar performance, we’d say it’s a major steal.

M Mcirco Glass Meal Prep Containers vs. Glasslock 18-Piece Assorted Oven-Safe Container Set

If you’re big on meal prepping, you may want to consider M Mcirco’s 20-piece container set. While it doesn’t have the same variety in size and shape as the Glasslock set, the ten 22-ounce containers are perfect for packing, freezing, and reheating lunches and dinners. The set costs the exact same as Glasslock’s, and it’s also made with FDA-approved glass. Snap-lock lids with silicone seals ensure air stays out and your food stays in.

Final Verdict

If glass is your goal, get this set.

This product gives you a lot for your money: airtight food storage, oven, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher compatibility, and an aesthetically pleasing design. Yes, glass containers are more expensive than their plastic counterparts, but the set is highly durable and eco-friendly.
