If there’s anyone who could fully revive the erotic thriller genre, it’s the geniuses behind M3GAN. Luckily for all of us, it seems as though they’re set to do exactly that.

On June 20, Deadline reported that the production companies Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are working on the feature film Soulm8te, which will take place within the M3GAN universe. The movie centers on a man who copes with the death of his wife by acquiring an artificially intelligent android. In trying to bring the android to life, he “inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate,” per Deadline. According to Variety, the movie is being billed as a ’90s-style “domestic thriller” but with a modern, technological twist.”

Soulm8te will be directed by Kate Dolan, who also helmed the 2021 psychological horror film You Are Not My Mother. Dolan also rewrote the script, which was originally penned by Rafael Jordan, with a story by James Wan (Saw), Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan.

Dolan told Deadline that she views “this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness.”

“Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths,” she said.

Wan, who is serving as a producer, told the entertainment outlet that the movie “is a thrilling and seductive addition to the M3GAN universe.”

“We’re excited to partner with Kate to bring this story to life with her unique cinematic vision and point of view,” he added.

SOULM8TE won’t come to theaters until January 2, 2026, but thankfully, we have more from the M3GAN universe to hold us over. Last January, just a few weeks after the movie premiered, it was announced that M3GAN would be getting a sequel. Titled M3GAN 2.0, the movie will also be written by Akela Cooper, who wrote the original screenplay, and will once again star Allison Williams and Violet McGraw. It arrives in theaters on June 27, 2025.

Between M3GAN’s sickening dance moves, implicit critiques of heteronormativity, and the inimitable Brian Jordan Alvarez in a supporting role, the movie became an instant queer classic when it was released in January 2023. Hopefully, we can look forward to that same kind of campy fun from both SOULM8TE and M3GAN 2.0.
