An Even Gorier Version of M3GAN Is Coming Out Soon

It's time for everyone’s favorite killer android to really go off the rails.

The horror movie M3GAN was already damn near perfect. It had a runway-ready killer android, an instantly iconic dance routine, and an unforgettable use of David Guetta’s “Titanium” featuring Sia. The only thing that could make it better is some gore. You know, blood, guts, and all that other good stuff.

Fortunately, after teasing an unrated cut of the film, the team behind the surprise box-office hit has revealed that we’ll soon be able to experience it for ourselves. As horror outlet Bloody Disgusting reported Friday, the February 24 physical release of the film on Blu-ray will include a version that abandons the PG-13 sensibilities of the theatrical cut to show us even more death and destruction. The unrated edition will also stream on Peacock that same day.

Fans of M3GAN — and I am decidedly one of them — will recall that while the horror movie packed plenty of laughs and queer-coded nods into its short runtime, it had to skimp on the kills, cutting away, for example, just before someone’s face was about to melt off. That move was a smart business decision, allowing the film to make nearly $170 million at the global box office to date and land a sequel. But I suspect that LGBTQ+ horror fans especially wanted to see the movie really go off the rails.

No less a figure than M3GAN herself seemed to acknowledge this calculus in her own announcement, writing on Twitter, “u watched the censored version the suits put in theaters, now watch what rly happened in the unrated cut.”

In the month since M3GAN aerial-flipped her way into theaters, she has become a bona fide LGBTQ+ sensation. Perhaps most memorably, she inspired an Aubrey Plaza-starring Saturday Night Live sketch about the movie’s queer resonance, featuring a cameo from Allison Williams herself. (And yes, that skit somehow managed to invoke the infamous rimjob scene in Girls.)

What can we expect from the unrated cut of M3GAN? Given that screenwriter Akela Cooper told the Los Angeles Times that it was originally “way gorier,” I’m choosing to believe that each kill will be longer and keeping my fingers crossed for some additional, never-before-seen mayhem. What can I say? I am a simple woman who just wants to see a four-foot tall doll murder more people.
