At a recent press conference for the new shades of Omega’s Aqua Terra watch, actress Zoë Kravitz openly admitted she is horrible with time: “I set my clocks in the house ten minutes early, which helped for a while. And then you’re like, It’s ten minutes early — I’m fine, and then it doesn’t work anymore.”
On that day, Kravitz, whose most recent role was as Catwoman in the latest Batman, was punctual. Over the past five years, she has been working on her directorial debut, Pussy Island, which she started writing in 2017. “The title came from that world,” Kravitz told WSJ. last year. It was “born out of a lot of anger and frustration around the lack of conversation about the treatment of women, specifically in industries that have a lot of money in them, like Hollywood, the tech world, all of that.”
Speaking of women, someone from the crowd asked if she was into women wearing men’s watches: “Big-watch energy?” she said, laughing. “I’m into it.” She added, “Men can wear small watches, too. It doesn’t mean anything more than that.”
Do you regularly wear watches?
I wear watches like I wear jewelry, so when I put something on, I leave it on for a month. It’s weird; a lot of friends of mine are like, “How do you sleep in chunky rings?” And I just do. For night events, I prefer a smaller watch and something bright and gold so it feels like a statement piece. If I wear all silver or all gold, it will be a monthlong phase, and I kind of dress around my jewelry. And Omega dedicates itself to craftsmanship — it’s a beautiful old tradition — and their ability to evolve while holding on to what’s classic. And many brands I work with do that well, like YSL: learning how to play and grow and try new things.
What’s a book, film, and music you are listening to?
I love Steve Lacy’s album. I’m really into that. I love Just Kids, Patti Smith’s book. It’s my favorite book; I read it over and over again. I love The Bear — it was just phenomenal — and Swarm.
What is a dinner-party etiquette rule you have?
I do try not to do phones at the dinner table. Not even put it on the table — leave it in your purse. Check it if you need to. I think we all got used to it being normal to just pick it up in the middle of a conversation, and it just ruins the vibe.
If you could travel in time, what’s a moment you would go back to?
I’d go back to being a kid. Both my grandmothers are passed now, so I would like to spend some time with them. If I could spend a day with them, it would be amazing.
What advice would you give to people looking to home in on their personal style?
People should really dress not based on a trend but rather on what they want to express. Sometimes I wake up and I feel more masculine, and I want to channel that and I think it’s sexy and fun. So it’s about checking in with yourself first. And the reason I stick with the same jewelry for a while — I like when things kind of become a part of you, when it’s not like it’s on you but you’re melded together. So I’ll wear the same T-shirt a lot and the same jewelry. It kind of becomes you.
