(The Center Square) – Candidates in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District race have tailored their campaigns to the most pressing and pragmatic issue for U.S. voters: the economy.

Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur and her Trump-endorsed challenger, state Rep. Derek Merrin, have visited small businesses and voters around Ohio in efforts to secure the coveted tossup seat.

Kaptur has focused on causes such as boosting home ownership and lowering healthcare prices. She has largely avoided voicing stances on cultural topics Democrats often focus on, such as abortion access and gender issues.

In office, Kaptur has supported policies aimed at increasing domestic manufacturing and renewable energy projects in Ohio.

“Marcy has dedicated her career in public service to fighting for all Ohioans to have a fair playing field as they seek economic and health security,” says Kaptur’s campaign website. “She’s worked with both parties to secure investments in our communities and has been a true friend of veterans, seniors, first responders and working people.”

Merrin has centered his campaign on lowering taxes and increasing fiscal transparency. He has spent much of his time in office reforming property, sales, and fuel taxes.

Merrin also supports school choice and reducing healthcare regulations and pricing.

"I have a proven record of fighting against the established political class in Ohio, and I look forward to bringing that fight to Congress with a strong Republican majority where we will uphold the Constitution, balance the budget, secure our borders, protect the U.S. dollar from further devaluation, and enact congressional term limits," Merrin said.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has targeted Ohio District 9 as a seat it hopes to flip this election.
