WASHINGTON — Down by as many as five runs, it took the Cardinals until the 10th inning to take their first lead of the evening and not nearly that long to seize one that lasted.
Plunged into extra innings for the third consecutive day, the Cardinals scored a run in each of their final four innings to complete a comeback eight innings in the making with a 7-6 victory Friday night at Nationals Park. Masyn Winn scored the decisive run on a passed ball in the top of the 11th inning, but it was a steady drumbeat of hits that brought the Cardinals back, base by base, from an early 5-0 deficit. Willson Contreras tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth that sent the game toward extra innings.
Ryan Helsley had his first multi-inning appearance of the season as he tried twice to secure a one-run win, doing so in the 11th by retiring all three batters he faced.

Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn fields a ground ball during the third inning against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on Friday, July 5, 2024, in Washington.
The winning run scored when Contreras swung over a pitch for a strikeout, but the ball got away from catcher Riley Adams, who had just entered the game. That misplay allowed Winn to streak home for the Cardinals’ second lead of the game, both in extra innings.
Helsley’s streak of converting 31 consecutive save opportunities ended in the 10th inning thanks in no small part to Major League Baseball’s spontaneously generated baserunner. Helsley had an out when Washington catcher Keibert Ruiz pulled a single to right field that scored a teammate and reknotted the score, 6-6. The Cardinals’ closer — and their likely representative at the All-Star Game — set a club record with 31 saves before the midseason break and had not blown a save since March.
The 10th ended when former Cardinal Juan Yepez and Helsley dueled through a 10-pitch at-bat. Yepez could have won the game with a fly ball to the outfield and a groundball squirming through the drawn-in infield. Instead, he fouled three consecutive full-count pitches and then laced a slider into an inning-ending double play.
Onto the 11th.
The Cardinals took their first lead of the game in the top of the 10th inning with Nolan Gorman’s second RBI single since entering the game in the eighth. Gorman came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit single for the Cardinals’ fourth run, and in the 10th his leadoff single with the extra-inning runner on base put the Cardinals up, 6-5.
It took the Cardinals seven innings, but that swing completed their comeback.
Washington zoomed to a hearty, early lead against Cardinals starter Sonny Gray. For the second consecutive game, Gray allowed at least five runs, and Washington worked him through two lengthy, bloated innings in the evening’s sweltering heat. He faced 10 batters and Washington had four runs before Gray got his fourth out.
The Nationals led 5-0 by the end of three.
Six innings later, they came within two outs of that being enough.
The Cardinals chewed apart the lead methodically — a double steal here, a sacrifice fly there, and a dash from a double, too. They had multiple chances in late innings to do what Contreras did with one swing in the ninth. In both the seventh and eighth innings the Cardinals got the tying run into scoring position only to strand the runner. They entered the ninth inning 3 for 11 in the game with runners in scoring position. They were 1 for 5 with runners in scoring position during the seventh and eighth innings as the rally hit speedbumps.
With one out in the ninth, Contreras took care of it on his own — no need to have a runner in scoring position when he could tie the game with a solo homer.
Early highs: temp and Gray’s pitch count
Before he threw his first pitch, Gray appeared to have already soaked his jersey in sweat.
It would not get much time to dry.
The first-pitch temperature Friday night at Nationals Park was 97 degrees, and a muggy, stagnant 97 to boot. For several innings, there was also minimal breeze coming from the plate.
Warming up for the game was enough to drench a pitcher’s jersey, let alone if that same pitcher tried to slog through a 33-pitch first inning. After five batters, Gray had already allowed a run, three baserunners, and received a visit from pitching coach Dusty Blake. He was slipping behind in counts and hits were slipping through. When the inning ended on a caught stealing, the Nationals did him a favor following Luis Garcia Jr.’s RBI single that put Washington ahead, 2-0.
That out on the bases saved Gray at least one more pitch.
What it did not buy him was much time to reset.
Patrick Corbin retired the Cardinals on nine pitches in the top of the second inning to yank Gray back into the furnace quickly. Again the pitch count climbed. Three of the first four Nationals in the bottom of the inning got base hits. Leadoff hitter C.J. Abrams tagged a line drive that appeared to carry more than right fielder Dylan Carlson expected, and when it cleared his head Abrams’ hit became a two-run double. It took Gray 50 pitches to get through two innings, and he faced a dozen National batters to get his first six outs.
In the third, two quick outs were followed by Garcia’s solo homer on Gray’s 56th pitch of the game. He was just 2 2/3 innings into the start at that point.
Gray found his footing from there and was able to get seven outs from the final seven Nationals he faced. That piloted the Cardinals through five innings to reduce the potential wear on the bullpen.
Through five innings, Gray allowed five runs (all earned) on eight hits, and he struck out six. For the fourth time in 16 starts, the right-hander allowed at least five runs, though he had not allowed that many earned runs since he did in back-to-back starts in May.
Nibbling back into the ballgame
Because the Cardinals appear to be obligated this season to only play close games that require the involvement of the bullpen, they dutifully began biting into the Nationals’ five-run lead almost as soon as it was established.
Down 5-0 after three, the lower half of the Cardinals’ lineup turned two singles that glanced off infielders into a rally for two runs in the top of the fourth. Paul Goldschmidt and Arenado had back-to-back singles — one to the shortstop, the other off the second baseman’s glove — that turned into a bases-loaded opportunity. Dylan Carlson lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Goldschmidt for the Cardinals’ first run of the game, and catcher Pedro Pages followed with an RBI groundball that was ruled a hit by the official scorer.
The Cardinals inched back into the game, one base at a time.
Masyn Winn took two of them with a leadoff double in the fifth, and he scored on Contreras’ RBI single. In the eighth, Arenado’s third hit of the game was a leadoff double that became a run and a 5-4 score on Gorman’s pinch-hit single.
High RISP situation
The Cardinals’ steady, opportunistic climb out of the hole on the scoreboard put them within reach of a tied game first in the seventh inning with their former MVP at that plate.
Michael Siani’s leadoff single put the inning in motion, and through a series of events that included a double steal the Cardinals had two runners in scoring position. Contreras had the first crack at tying the game — and lined out to second base. That brought up Goldschmidt, whose struggles to the start the season are arguably most apparent with runners in scoring position. Earlier in the game, he struck out looking with a runner in scoring position.
That dropped his production this season with runners in scoring position to 13 for 76, or a .187 average. Of those 13 hits, only two have been for extra bases.
With two outs and two on, the Nationals went to right-handed reliever Hunter Harvey to face Goldschmidt. It took Harvey one pitch to get a groundball for the final out of the inning.
Nats call up Yepez, just in time
Ahead of the series against the Cardinals, Washington made a change at first base — and just in time for a reunion, too. Juan Yepez, who thundered all spring against his former team, joined the Nationals’ lineup from Class AAA on Friday. The Nats purchased his contract from Triple-A Rochester and told reporters that Yepez, who debuted with the Cardinals in 2022 and had their only playoff homer that October, will get a long look to be their starting first baseman.
Yepez, 26, hit .263 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs for Washington’s highest affiliate this season. In Grapefruit League play, Yepez went 8 for 11 with two homers vs. Cardinals.
He was at the plate in the first inning with runners at the corners when the Nationals gave Gray a hand and ran out of the inning. Yepez led off the next inning with a single to begin another two-run rally against the Cardinals’ right-hander.
