WASHINGTON — A game overstuffed with runs and undermined by poor pitching and spirals of poor play proved to be as forgettable as its box score was busy.
The Washington Nationals, always good for taking a sizeable lead and squandering it to the Cardinals, surged to an impenetrable 13 runs in the first four innings. Not even they could misplace that lead on the way to a 14-6 romp Saturday afternoon at Nationals Park. Cardinals starter Lance Lynn allowed a career-worst 11 runs in his two-plus innings and the Cardinals allowed a season-worst 14 runs.
Rookie James Wood, a potential star for the Nationals, hit his first major-league home run in the second inning – and by then it was the third allowed by Lynn.
Two times through their order and the Nats had 10 runs off Lynn (4-4).
For each team, the long, laborious, and sporadically entertaining slog became an exercise in avoiding bullpen wear for later in the four-game series. The Cardinals used two relievers to cover the innings left over by Lynn, and that included a three-inning outing from former setup man and closer Giovanny Gallegos.

The game decided in the first few innings still took 3 hours, 10 minutes to play.
Nationals capsize Lynn, quickly
Like fellow starter Sonny Gray the day before, Lynn had a moment – or several – in his game Saturday where the Nationals had more runs against him than he had outs from them.
Washington leadoff hitter C. J. Abrams drilled Lynn’s first pitch of the game for a solo homer. It did not get better from there.
Abrams’ sixth career leadoff homer and fourth of this season ignited what became a four-run first inning for the Nationals. By the end of the second inning, Lynn had allowed three home runs, including two three-run bolts, and a total of nine runs (eight earned). The catalog of struggles he had choked the box score. Jesse Winker walked three times in three innings against Lynn. Rookie Wood, a local star and top prospect in his first week in the majors, crushed his first big-league homer and followed an inning later with a two-run double for five RBIs off Lynn.
Abrams, Winker, and Keibert Ruiz scored two runs apiece before Lynn got a sixth out.
Wood’s double in the third inning pushed the Nationals out to an 11-4 lead and effectively chased Lynn from the game before he could get a ninth out.
All of that damage against Lynn came immediately after one of his best starts of the season. The veteran right-hander pitched six shutout innings against Cincinnati this past week, and in his previous two starts – both at home – he allowed a total of one run in 12 2/3 innings. He led as he usually does with his fastball, and he got more than a dozen swings and misses on the four-seam heater in his previous start. The Nats ambushed it. Feasting on first-pitch fastballs, the Nationals hit two first-pitch homers in the first inning.
Abrams’ first and then Ruiz’s three-run shot.
Wood’s homer came on the third pitch – but first strike of his at-bat.
Lynn hadn't defeated the Nationals since his first stint with the Cardinals, and he leaves the capital having allowed a career-high 11 runs (10 earned). His previous high in 334 career starts was nine earned runs allowed.
Hints of a rally
By the end of the second inning, the Nationals had zoomed past the lead they took Friday night and even bested the lead they had way back in Game 5 of the 2012 National League Division Series. In each of those games, the Cardinals rallied to eventually win the games.
They were down 5-0 on Friday night and during that infamous October 2012 clincher, Daniel Descalso & Co. trailed 6-0 before slowly, ruthlessly whittling away at Washington’s lead.
The climb was steeper Saturday.
Down 7-0 in the second inning before some haphazard play and a throwing error turned that into 9-0 by the end of the second inning, the Cardinals did stage a threat. The Nationals sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning. The Cardinals sent 10 in the top of the third. On his way to three hits, Nolan Gorman opened the inning with a double. Masyn Winn, Nolan Arenado, and Brendan Donovan all had RBI singles as pressure mounted on Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore. The Cardinals nearly chomped that nine-run lead in half and had a chance to do much more when Dylan Carlson worked his way back from a 1-2 count for a walk. His two-out take loaded the bases for the slugger who started it all.
With one swing and a second grand slam of the road trip, Gorman would haven’t cleaved the Nationals’ lead down to one.
Gore struck him out to end the inning.
The Nationals widened their lead with at least two runs in each of the first four innings to assure the Cardinals never got as close as they did in third inning again.
Liberatore takes leftovers
Deep into the third inning and 11 runs into the Nats’ romp it became clear that Lynn would not provide the innings craved by a bullpen thinned through so many close games.
The bulk of that work fell to Matthew Liberatore.
The lefty – who was also coming off a strong start when called out of the bullpen – took over with two runs on base in the third inning. He would allow two more runs but, most importantly, pitch 2 1/3 innings to bridge the early-game mess to the available late-game mop-up. Liberatore struck out one and allowed three hits, and the lefty reached 97.8 mph with his sinker and averaged 93.5 mph or better with two of his fastballs. The resilient lefty has shown an ability to bounce-back quickly, so his handling of the middle innings buys the Cardinals’ bullpen something of a break.
If, that is, it’s not scrambling early in Sunday’s afternoon game.
Levity
A day after scoring the decisive run on a passed ball, the Cardinals’ Winn added another unusual run with a dash home while the baseball lingered somewhere behind home plate.
Not that Ruiz could find it.
In the fourth inning, with Willson Contreras at the plate, Gore whipped a pitch that went in toward Contreras’ feet and then away from his catcher. Winn broke swiftly from second to easily advance to third base. When he got there, Ruiz still could not find the baseball. He looked and spun and pirouetted and waited for help from someone, anyone to find the baseball. A fan did his best to point to where the ball was – on the ledge atop the backstop.
It had skipped not just behind Ruiz but bounded up to rest at the net.
Winn used the confusion to dart home for the two-base advance on the wild pitch.
The Nationals challenged the call, suggesting that the ball being on the ledge and in the net was a dead ball that Winn could not advance against. A review of the play in New York confirmed the call on the field and Winn was safe. The Cardinals moved the game to 11-5, and by the end of the same inning the Nats had it back up to 13-5.
