Predicting damage in notched functionally graded materials plates thr...Barhm Mohamad
Presently, Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are extensively utilised in several industrial sectors, and the modelling of their mechanical behaviour is consistently advancing. Most studies investigate the impact of layers on the mechanical characteristics, resulting in a discontinuity in the material. In the present study, the extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) technique is used to analyse the damage in a Metal/Ceramic plate (FGM-Al/SiC) with a circular central notch. The plate is subjected to a uniaxial tensile force. The maximum stress criterion was employed for fracture initiation and the energy criterion for its propagation and evolution. The FGM (Al/SiC) structure is graded based on its thickness using a modified power law. The plastic characteristics of the structure were estimated using the Tamura-Tomota-Ozawa (TTO) model in a user-defined field variables (USDFLD) subroutine. Validation of the numerical model in the form of a stress-strain curve with the findings of the experimental tests was established following a mesh sensitivity investigation and demonstrated good convergence. The influence of the notch dimensions and gradation exponent on the structural response and damage development was also explored. Additionally, force-displacement curves were employed to display the data, highlighting the fracture propagation pattern within the FGM structure.

Maintaining asset integrity, maximising performance, and reaching peak production outcomes all depend on effective defect elimination management.
The difficulties of locating, comprehending, and resolving asset flaws will be examined in this article, with a focus on the significance of having a complete awareness of their nature, implications, and possible outcomes.
The significance of maintenance departments creating a framework for integrating defect elimination and bad actor analysis into their proactive maintenance strategies, enabling them to make more informed decisions, becomes clear when we delve into the subtleties of defect analysis.
Defects in an asset are characterised as flaws, inadequacies, or departures from standard operating characteristics or design specifications.
The kind of defect, where it is located on the assembly of the asset, and what happens when it exists determine how one defect impacts the performance of the asset as a whole.
For example, a minor corrosion patch on a panel that is readily replaceable and does not pose a structural risk to the asset overall is unlikely to have an adverse effect on the asset's longevity, performance, or safety.
Effective Defect Elimination Management is critical for maintaining asset integrity, optimizing performance, and achieving peak production results. It involves identifying, understanding, and addressing asset defects systematically.
Understanding asset defects requires accurate identification and comprehensive documentation in the CMMS, including risk assessments that evaluate both the consequence and likelihood of defects leading to failures.
Defect Elimination Management (DEM) is a comprehensive approach that goes beyond traditional maintenance practices, focusing on root cause analysis and implementing long-term solutions to prevent defect recurrence.
"Bad Actors" in defect elimination refer to equipment, systems, or components that consistently underperform, require frequent maintenance, or cause repeated operational reliability or quality issues.
Advanced diagnostic tools and technologies, such as vibration analysis systems, infrared thermography, and AI-based analytics, have transformed the way asset defects are identified and managed.
Quality and timely repairs and clear business processes for managing defects are crucial, along with maintaining quality maintenance history data to provide valuable insights for future defect elimination processes.

Water Utility: Anglian Water – UK, future proofs its Telemetry System without interruption to operation
The customer
Our first case is with Anglian Water…..Anglian water is geographically the largest Water and Wasterwater utility in the UK, and they maintain an advanced IT strategy.
This British utility manages the water distribution network and directly serves 6 million population - It covers:
46,000 + miles of pipeline
8,000 outstations
1,800 District Metered Areas
Several 100 reservoirs
Anglian Water was one of the first to install a telemetry system for water and wastewater utility in the United Kingdom in the 1970s
In order to maintain this standard, it was paramount for them to update their system and at the same time migrate the data collected over 25 years.
Customer challenges
Anglian Water needs to take advantage of Big Data in order to run they operations efficiently and effectively
- 500,000 telemetry data points
- 25 years worth of information
The biggest Customer challenges are to :
> Upgrade and integrate new system to existing system without any interruption of operations
> Replace Leakage System with Integrated Leakage & Pressure Management System
Schneider Electric solution
Smart Water solution
Smart water is not just software: It is about products, systems and services and how they interact with each other, including what the customer already has
Smart water solution is made of 3 I’s
Information: Realize your full potential – Use information that you may not even know you have.
Do you think you could get more out of your installed technology base today? How does it support your utility’s strategy today?
Integration: Make the best out of your current investments - Know your installed base and propose how to make it better by integrating what you already have.
How integrated are your key systems? Have you standardized your IT on any/many technology(ies)? Do you have any preference?
Do you leverage all the data coming from your instruments for optimal energy management?
Innovation: Fill in the gaps – Create a joint roadmap to resolve the utility’s challenges as they come.
What is your utility’s strategy moving forward? What are the plans to support this strategy from the technology point of view?
StruxureWare Plant Operations Clear SCADA delivers reliable real-time wireless data transmission
Telemetry system
> To monitor every ounce that flows through the network
> To serve a large geographical area: real-time monitoring of 46K miles of pipelines, several hundred of reservoirs + 1,000 assets dispersed in that large area that need to be monitored to make sure that they are working effectively
The core technology used for the telemetry system is StruxureWare Plant Operations – Clear SCADA
The team also implemented Water Management Suite as the solution for the integrated leakage and pressure management system
This was not just a upgrade project. Anglian Water wanted the system to be open and integrated with existing business systems and to move from a vertical structure to a horizontal structure
Customer Benefits from this Smart Water Solution:
System that is fully integrated with the business (Open integrated system)
System allows Anglian Water to run their business more efficiently and effectively : 500,000 telemetry data points + 25 years worth of information
Smart Water solution :
Optimizes the company’s water loss management process and resources to achieve and maintain a low Non Revenue Water level over time (Made of Integrated Leakage & Pressure Management System )
Provides real-time monitoring access
Enables wireless data transmission
Big Data management
Country: Egypt
Higher system availability
Water services provider for the Province of Cremona in the north of Italy needed to create a centralized control room to efficiently operate remote assets at over 1000 sites
They wanted to know how they could benefit from the IIoT and turned to Schneider Electric
Here we show a complete solution built on a strong EcoStruxure platform with integrated software and WWW domain expertise
What we’re looking at here is how Padania Acque has integrated EcoStruxure Water Cycle Advisor software applications with its ERP
From the ERP they feed data about billing and invoicing to the Water Management Suite
They also collect and store in the cloud data from their connected drives and RTUs about the state of the water network
This means they have ALL of the water information in the Water Management System to understand water balances, create a dashboard that helps to better see and manage the entire water service, and to help to create reports
We also know from this customer that the strong collaboration between their OT and IT people is one of their keys to success – their people with telemetry expertise are working very closely with the company’s IT people to develop a holistic system that is suitable and effective for collecting data from the field and managing it and storing it on the IT side
They were clear with their teams that in order to be successful that this project needed to be approached with both teams working alongside each other
And so the results of addressing all of the customer’s requirements, particularly around water management and water network management, are reduced energy consumption by at least 5% and operations improved by 20%
