The Debt Reviews

Given the cast, setting, and heavy themes involved, one could hardly be blamed for expecting more.

Not just anybody can convincingly play the great Helen Mirren as a young woman, but Jessica Chastain pulls it off without breaking stride.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 28, 2021

Mirren looks and feels like a woman who has been carrying around the weight of her soul for 30 years.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 5, 2020

A tense thriller about Israeli Nazi hunters that grips you and has you on the edge of your seat and all of that other stuff that a thriller is supposed to do.

Full Review | Original Score: B | Jul 12, 2020

While this film doesn't quite deliver what a viewer might hope for considering the pedigree of the cast and director, The Debt still manages to be a solid drama... Worth seeing at least for the continued progression of the career of Jessica Chastain.

Full Review | May 7, 2019

The Debt is a good movie. Had it made a more convincing case for the early motives of two of the main characters, it might have been great.

Full Review | Original Score: B | Feb 8, 2019

The Debt is stellarly set, shot, and acted.

A film like this must rely not just on pacing, but on performances, which is where The Debt really shines.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 8, 2019

One could question whether life should still be found in the subject of the Nazi war atrocities for entertainment purposes. However, when something as thought provoking as The Debt emerges, the answer must be yes.

While the script sometimes bites it off more than [director John] Madden can handle in terms of juggling flashbacks, its central section works as an unpretentious thriller.

Full Review | Aug 31, 2018

It never fully compels or meshes as the emotionally driven, multilayered, grown-up thriller it yearns to be.

Full Review | Aug 31, 2018

Unpredictable throughout, The Debt may harp on the fine line between fact and fiction a bit much, but with Helen Mirren on board, there's little chance the film isn't going to reach its final destination without some style, class, and riveting insight.

Whenever Mirren is around, everyone benefits.

Full Review | Aug 30, 2017

The film does have some suspense and makes some interesting points about our need to make heroes out of flawed people; but in the end, even with this wonderful cast, it's still a disappointment.

Full Review | Mar 22, 2016

How can the film convincingly preach via Ms. Mirren's voice-over that truth is more valuable than justice while her character is exacting vengeance on screen?

Full Review | Oct 7, 2015

Younger audiences will likely find The Debt too slow for their liking, but what it lacks in realistic casting it gains in meatily plotted espionage and weighty drama.

Full Review | Sep 8, 2013

A taut and complex thriller, this movie won't be easy for forget.

Full Review | Original Score: 5.0/5 | Jun 30, 2013

Tense, intelligent entertainment. That's rare, and that is more than enough.

Full Review | Original Score: B | Jun 22, 2013

A taut, historical thriller about the capture of one of Nazism's most evil.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 4, 2013

The Debt may have its flaws, but thanks to some strong performances and gripping moments, it's worth investing in.
