While I have been trained in a number of modalities and work with a diverse group of clients, some areas of particullar interest are adults, young adults, couples counseling, LGBTQ issues, drug and alcohol use and abuse, grief and mourning as well as eating disorders and body related issues.
I believe that change and healing come through relationships; our relationship with self as well as our relationships with others. It is because of this belief that I approach my work as a collaborative venture that requires large amounts of both compassion and curiosity. It is my goal to create an atmosphere where these qualities can be nurtured and to provide the individual with the support and space to reflect on old patterns of behavior and the opportunity to respond in new ways that allow for a more fully realized and authentic way of living.

HAVE YOU OR OTHERS HAD CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR ALCOHOL USE? WHEN FEELING ANGRY OR FRUSTRATED DO YOU USE ALCOHOL OR OTHER DRUGS TO HELP RELIEVE YOUR NEGATIVE FEELINGS? Misusing alcohol, drugs, food or engaging in behaviors like excessive gambling or shopping to cope with strong emotions, may become habitual and as problematic as the negative feelings they are meant to alleviate.

Not accepting new clients
Nevertheless, I have led groups for and worked individually with people dealing with single issues, such as sexuality, grief and mourning, or drug and alcohol use.
I am a seasoned clinical social worker and psychotherapist with 30 years' experience. I offer clients a welcoming, safe environment in which to learn more about themselves and explore new ways of enhancing their relationships and functioning. Individual therapy is my primary method of treatment. My style is psychodynamically based, supportive and interactive, informed by my experience utilizing many psychotherapeutic modalities. In hospitals and in private practice I have worked with a diverse group of clients, including veterans, as they address issues related to gender, sexual identity, addiction, grief, PTSD, panic disorder, OCD, anxiety, and depression.

Are you wondering if your drug or alcohol use is becoming a problem? Do you know it is a problem, but cannot seem to control it? Or maybe you engage in a different sort of self-sabotaging behavior, such as binge-eating, compulsive spending or undermining your success at work. Self-sabotaging behaviors, including drug and alcohol misuse, are actions we choose but they feel automatic and inescapable. Often, they serve to maintain status quos, prevent growth, and imprison us in unhappy situations. I understand the pain and hopelessness that comes from repeating the same mistakes and help people overcome their self-destructive patterns.

These issues may include: life transitions/changes, feeling like everything is out of your control, grief, unhealthy ways of coping, feeling burnt out, self-medicating with drug/alcohol use, little motivation, anger outbursts, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, shame, difficulty at work/school, low self-esteem, difficulty managing frequent mood shifts, and relationship issues, among others. Whatever you are struggling with, you are not alone.

Thank you for viewing my page. Searching for a psychologist can be intimidating and difficult, but finding the right match can make it life changing. Many individuals see me because they are feeling sad, lonely, anxious, or "stuck." Some clients want to work through life transitions including loss of a loved one, having a new baby, or divorce. I help many clients with substance/alcohol use and working through traumas. Whatever your concern, I am happy to discuss it with you to see if I am the psychologist for you.

I am a therapist/drug counselor/dating coach that is warm and caring. I start with developing an authentic relationship, then proceed to processing your feelings and thoughts with added behavioral tools. Helping you feel accepted, understood, and supported so we can explore and organize experiences and create new ways of coping. My practice is focused on treating young adults who may be facing challenges in their personal, social, or dating life. Therapy is one way of helping yourself not only with discovering the root causes of your behavior, but also to identify one's truth and inner reality.

It goes without saying that these have been trying times. With the stresses, losses, and fatigue brought on by the pandemic, and anxieties and uncertainty about the future, many of our daily routines have given way to depression, anxiety, tension with others, and unhealthy coping. Psychotherapy can provide the support needed to improve how you feel and function by reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms, reducing excess drinking or substance use, increasing awareness and skills in personal interactions, and improving your overall outlook on life.

Struggling to cope with intense worry, sadness, or anger can feel overwhelming and lonely. Reducing alcohol or other substance use can be similarly isolating and intertwined with negative emotions. Recognizing that there is a problem can be the largest hurdle, but finding a way to make those changes does not have to be. You may have already made attempts to change on your own and make things better, but it hasn’t quite worked out. Often, what to do and when to do it is not clear.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
