In these stressful times you may find yourself struggling with feelings of anxiety or depression that have long been with you or have emerged in response to recent events. You may feel hopeless about the future or plagued about the past feeling a strong sense of disconnection from yourself or others. Even attempts to talk to friends or family fail as they may not know or understand how to help you. Regardless of the specific nature of your difficulties, their impact is palpable, affecting your health, your relationships and self-perception. Whatever the struggle, you are looking for some help.

“I’m responsible. I’m not good enough. I’m not safe.” These messages replay in your mind during conflict, in relationships, at your job, or in your day to day. These thoughts make it hard to set boundaries in your family or relationships, pursue your interests, passions, or personal goals without guilt, or feel connected to your emotions. These core beliefs developed throughout your life but they do not have to define your present.

Finding the right therapist can be a great investment in your self growth and healing. I believe that everyone is deserving of support - my goal is to hold a non-judgmental and compassionate space for you to identify and work toward your goals. I am a queer-identified clinical social worker who practices from an anti-oppressive, intersectional feminist lens. I work with adults (18 and over) and specialize in supporting those who have experienced trauma, attachment wounding, anxiety, substance use, and dissociation, and those who are systems or plurals. I also love providing therapy to other therapists.

People often come to therapy when they are seeking relief from mental or emotional pain. I believe much of this inner pain comes from the methods we learn throughout our life to protect us from troubling thoughts and emotions, as well as from the difficulties in our environment. In psychotherapy, deep and lasting healing occurs when we develop awareness into the nature of our thinking and feeling, how they are shaped by experience, and the important functions they serve in the ways we manage our lives.

Our past can teach us a lot about ourselves and how we not only see the world but also how we react to it. I’m here to help you explore those significant moments that may have set you on this path, and reframe your thinking so that you can overcome those negative thoughts and emotions that may be keeping you from being the best version of yourself you can be. Through cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness based interventions, like guided meditation, body scanning, and breath work, I will help you create new habits that will set you on a path to becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be.

My patients would say that I am warm, engaging, creative, and non-judgemental. Therapy for me is an interactive relationship.I am not the kind of therapist who sits there, shakes her head, and says tell me more. My goal is to give you tools to figure out how to make your life work for you. One of my best traits is my availability. I return calls promptly and will spend after hours on the phone .Many patients have told me that I am the first therapist who ever helped them...and that is what my job is about.

People consult therapists for many reasons. Being a psychotherapist is a great privilege - to meet people at critical times, to come to know them deeply, and to help them sort out bewildering, sometimes frightening, often painful thoughts and feelings. Therapy is about relationships, past and present, and especially our relationship to our own interior. It's been my life's work to help people know themselves and make better decisions about their lives. I'm happy to see anyone, with the will, integrity, and courage to open up and work on themselves in depth.

Many of my clients come to therapy seeking healthier ways to communicate with others and address their own issues with self regulation. Often times they need to understand how to "connect the dots", between their present state of functioning and unresolved issues from past hurts, traumas, and patterns of behavior.

As a psychologist my number one goal is to approach you with acceptance, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. Through my work as a psychologist I have come to believe in the capacity of people to change. I welcome individuals that are questioning why their own attempts to improve the quality of their lives is not working. Often there can be mixed feelings about change. I recognize that change is difficult. I feel that self exploration is a challenge that often requires courage and risk.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
