Feeling scared and constantly on edge after a life-threatening event? Does it seem like worries are taking over your life? Are you feeling burnt out taking care of others? Perhaps you are a therapist feeling out of touch with why you ever wanted to do this. Maybe others see you as successful, but you secretly fear you will fall short of expectations (especially your own). Worry, anxiety, PTSD, burnout, or perfectionism have gotten in the way of living the life you want. You’ve lost touch with the things that bring you a sense of meaning and purpose. It’s not just you. Everyone gets stuck. I am here to help.

I work with individuals and couples seeking therapy for issues including relationships, depression, anxiety, sexuality, aging, and life transitions.
Psychotherapy is about listening. As a therapist I strive to listen with compassion and depth to help my clients hear their own voices of change and healing. How I understand psychotherapy to work is best expressed by Simone Weil: "Those who are unhappy have no need for anything in this world but people capable of giving them their attention. The capacity to give one's attention to a sufferer is a very rare and difficult thing; it is almost a miracle; it is a miracle." I surely cannot do miracles! But together with my clients I have watched miracles happen.

Taking steps to initiate therapy can be anxiety provoking with fears of the unknown.
Weekend appointments available. I appreciate an open dialogue with my clients that incorporates feedback to ensure their needs are being met during our time together.  In my view, the client-therapist relationship should prioritize honesty and respect and while diagnosing is one aspect of psychotherapy, I am most interested in how your daily life is being impacted and what we can do in our work together to develop coping and awareness that will bring more harmony and help you lead a more fulfilled life.

Are you struggling with anxiety that disrupts your daily life? Do you feel overwhelmed that your life hasn't improved? Have you ever been in therapy before for these concerns? Most likely you’ve been asked that question before, but nothing changes. Do you feel ashamed that no therapist has been able to considerably help you? Do you hope that maybe this time things can change? You aren't the only who feels anxious and asks these questions.

I work with teens & young(ish) adults who have experienced traumas & feel stuck, ashamed, depressed, anxious & are questioning who they are.
Are you wanting to heal from your past but feeling frozen by hurt and shame? Perhaps you keep trying to change but feel trapped by beliefs that you are not good enough, not loved. You’re trying to be a better partner, parent, and friend, and you keep giving to others, but get nothing in return. You feel alone, exhausted, and both desperate and terrified for someone to actually see you. A part of you wants to give up and shut yourself away, but another part keeps going each day. A part of you knows that there is more to life than this. A part of you has hope that things can be different, that you can be different.

I work with teenagers and adults with anxiety, depression, school avoidance, self-harm behaviors and OCD. If you like the idea of speaking freely about your thoughts and feelings without being judged, if you like feeling completely accepted for who you are, without having to change anything about yourself, then you’ve come to the right place. Therapy is an opportunity to meet with someone who will accept and support you unconditionally. It’s a space where you can actually learn to stop judging yourself and to let go of thought patterns and beliefs that have been holding you back from experiencing inner peace.

Many people come to me concerned that therapy cannot work for them. They feel hopeless, or discouraged, or worried that they are beyond help. In fact, some have had previous therapy experiences that have reinforced these fears. If that is your experience, don't give up hope. We will work together to create a treatment plan tailored to address your individual needs. I am an active and engaged therapist, which means I will not sit back and quietly smoke a pipe while you lie on my office couch. I strive to create a collaborative therapy environment where you are an equal partner in identifying your treatment goals.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
