I meet you where you are in whatever medium makes sense for you, be it music, art, drama, dance, or writing.
The ideal client is motivated to continue to work with their inner child to become grounded in the present moment. They may have anxiety, mood disorders, or personality disorders, or they may not be sure what is underlying their experience, which I can help identify as well. The ideal clients are open to trying new methods of healing, including arts and spirituality. They are willing to trust me with their feelings and express them, whether that is verbally, through the expressive arts, or both.

In conjunction with traditional psychotherapeutic frameworks (CBT, DBT, Gestalt, Psychodynamic), I use Expressive Arts Therapy (Movement, Drama, Music/Sound, Art) to help foster a creative process.
The therapy session is a time and space one sets aside to focus on self. To be with self. And to build one’s self. It can be challenging to reflect on patterns, thoughts and emotions, relationships, past events and/or change, but it can also be transformative and rewarding. My role as your therapist is to witness your process and to reflect back with you along the way. The therapeutic relationship is an essential piece of my practice and is built on honesty, trust, empathy, and compassion.

Hi! My name is Maya Rogers-Bursen, and I am a licensed mental health counselor and art therapist. I was adopted from India when I was six months old and my narrative has shaped the work I love doing with adoptees, and families in the adoption constellation. I am a transracial adoptee with a private practice focused in supporting those navigate the ups and downs of the adoption journey. I named my practice Chandani Post Adoption Counseling - Chandani is my birth name. I believe the first step to helping people with their unique challenges is to build a connection founded on compassion, collaboration, and respect. To me, the therapeutic relationship acts as the foundation of a successful treatment plan. My goal is to act as support and encouragement as you face challenges, heal, seek out positive change, or search for a deeper understanding of yourself. I'm a bilingual therapist and provide services in English or Spanish while utilizing a dynamic style of treatment that combines aspects of CBT, talk therapy, person-centered therapy, art, writing, goal setting, meditation, and more.

Change unleashes one's creative energy. When you engage in therapy you unleash changes within yourself. Therapy is a process of opening up about your life experiences and voicing your thoughts and feelings. Over-time you can gain a greater sense of self-awareness and confidence. You learn to trust your intuition to better cope and maintain well-being. I initially work with you to choose whether you prefer to use art therapy or talk therapy, or a combination of both. If interested, we can engage in Art Therapy, which involves art making with a variety of materials to express your feelings and cope with troubling emotions.

As a credentialed art therapist with twenty years of experience, in addition to talk therapy I can offer the opportunity to use art materials as an occasional, supplemental or central feature of our work together.
We are all works in progress. People seek therapy for many reasons. For instance, you may be looking for a place to process stressful events or address relationship problems. You may be yearning to interrupt your unhelpful patterns and ways of getting stuck, in order to find a life forward direction. Therapy is your time to focus on yourself and it is my goal to accompany you on your journey in the most helpful and constructive way possible. I encourage clients to regularly check in about the effectiveness of therapy. Together we will ask: are you beginning to experience positive shifts or forward movement in your life?

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
