I specialize in treating eating and body image issues, depression, anxiety, and difficulties associated with adjusting to life changes and transitions.
I approach therapy in a direct yet compassionate manner believing that long-term sustained change can only happen when growth occurs on the inside and flows outward. My goal is to help my clients walk their own individual path from self-judgment to self-transformation. I use a cognitive behavioral approach which guides you to understand how your thoughts/beliefs, feelings, and behaviors work together to determine your life experiences. Together, we will identify self-destructive patterns that stop you from getting what you want in life and replace them with constructive and goal-achieving ways of thinking and behaving.

My areas of expertise are treating depression, anxiety, grief and loss and trauma (PTSD).
We are born into mystery and we are on a spiritual quest to know ourselves more fully, to discover our life's purpose and to find our personal power. My therapeutic approach involves accompanying my clients on a journey of self-discovery and self-mastery. For, as Carlos Castaneda wrote, "We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong...the amount of work is the same." Ultimately, my goal is to be a mirror that reflects back to you your own innate goodness, strength and wisdom. We repeat what we don't repair. So, my job is to be a witness to your process of awakening the healer that's already present within you.

Not accepting new clients
I have been a licensed clinical social worker since 1993 and have worked with adults with anxiety, depression, trauma, family/relationship issues, LGTBQ, and serious and persistent mental illness.
[I am not taking new clients] There are times in life when we feel "stuck" and unable to move forward to live the life that we desire and deserve. While it takes strength and courage to reach out for help, the rewards of therapy are life-changing. I assist clients in identifying what may be holding them back. I empower clients to gain insight into underlying issues, heal deep wounds, and master the tools to create the life they desire and deserve. I am passionate about the therapeutic work I do and enjoy forming strong alliances with my clients, partnering with them throughout their personal journey of growth and discovery.

Finding the right therapist is like any other relationship in our lives, it's important that it's the right fit. My therapeutic style is warm, engaging, and collaborative. My priority is making sure the therapeutic relationship is a space where you can feel open to share your fears, dreams, goals, and authentic self while being supportively challenged on the things that are impeding your happiness and contributing to your distress. Throughout this process we will consider the role of your unique cultural identities and how your life experiences have influenced the person you are and hope to be.

I specialize in "overthinking" and am currently accepting new clients. In addition to my clinical training I have an extensive research background in anxiety, depression, relationships, overthinking, and eating disorders. I earned my Ph.D from Penn State and M.A. from Boston College. My approach to therapy is strength-based and results oriented. I adapt the work I do in psychotherapy to each individual client as I've found that each person benefits from an individualized treatment plan and a psychologist who is knowledgeable and experienced in a range of effective treatments.

I collaborate with patients to help them understand and resolve problems they experience with regard to: personal and work relationship difficulties, self-esteem concerns, depression and anxiety, unresolved grief and loss, sexual and intimacy conflicts, work and achievement inhibitions, parenting problems. Increased intellectual and emotional understanding of these problems often helps the individual develop more successful and rewarding approaches in dealing with day to day realities in adult life.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
