Relationships are HARD, right? They certainly can be. This is can be even more true if you've experienced trauma in your earlier years. This earlier trauma can make parenting, marriage, long-term partnership and even friendships feel difficult. At times, when things feel really bad, the depression, anxiety and hopelessness can really set in. You might look at your spouse, your child or even your relationship within yourself and wonder "how did I end up here?". There are ways that you react- it feels like your body reacts way before your brain, and it makes you feel out of control. It would be so nice to feel in control and at ease.

So many of us have internalized messages of worthlessness, helplessness, and fear-based living. Experiences of feeling rejected, diminished, abused, and/or uncared for in early years can lead to present-day self-attack and self-abandonment. You may feel as though you are uniquely unworthy, and must earn the love and acceptance of others through perfectionism, people-pleasing, or submission. Oftentimes, these underlying beliefs manifest as things like OCD and OCD tendencies, perfectionism, health anxiety or abusive relationships.

We all struggle sometimes. We feel uncertain and overwhelmed, we get stuck. It’s a completely normal part of life, and there is no need to go through it alone. When we experience these uncomfortable feelings, we can feel disconnected from our relationships, experiences, and life in general. Our mental spotlight shines more brightly on our challenges, leaving the good parts often in the dark. I offer a safe environment to explore your life experiences, challenges, and needs through open and authentic connection. I invite you into a deeper conversation.

Taking part in Psychotherapy with Kyle involves being offered a space that you can feel comfortable sharing your concerns and being met with honesty in return. I take pride in being able to help clients assess where improvements are needed and strengths are present. While using various therapeutic modalities, I most commonly support clients through the use of CBT, DBT, solution focused strategies and a person centred approach. As a young male I have had a lot of success helping males with male related issues: relationships, self-esteem, anger, anxiety, life improvement, or simply having someone to discuss stressful issues with.

The thought of talking to stranger about deeply personal issues can feel daunting. Talking to a therapist who values your story and perspective can guide understanding, empowerment and healing. Whether you are beginning to notice a sense of dissatisfaction with life, difficulty with relationships or heightening anxiety therapy is a space to feel heard and validated . Pressure and expectations can leave us feeling alone and wondering how we ended up here. Sometimes things happen that are outside of our control, things that impact us in ways that we never could have imagined. You are important and understanding yourself matters.

Let’s figure out what is holding you back and how to move forward in celebrating who you are. We all have parts of ourselves we wish were different, parts of ourselves we are ashamed of or perhaps sad or angry with. Sometimes we start to shape our understanding of ourselves through a narrative that is focused on these parts. My approach is one that uses curiosity to explore, understand and appreciate our unique story. Stories are ways in which we explain and understand our experiences. As your therapist, I will walk alongside you on your journey of exploring your story, rediscovering self and re-writing your story that you value.

I am accepting new clients! Life often unfolds with unexpected moments that can feel overwhelming, leaving us wondering how to navigate them. The daily habits we fall into can become burdens, weighing us down. If you've ever found yourself saying things like, "I'm stuck, and I don't know what to do" or, "I don't know how I can make it through this," I want you to know that you are not alone. I know first-hand that therapy can be intimidating. Opening up and sharing your experiences and beliefs with someone you've just met can feel like a daunting task. I want to encourage you, even if therapy feels challenging, it will be worth it.

To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
