I approach counselling from a lens that is grounded in the continued practice of anti-racism, disability justice, queer theory, sex positivity, and that recognizes the systemic violence that has, and continues to, harm us and impact our experiences in the world, and inside ourselves. The main niche of folks that I have had the honour of working with over the years have been queer and trans folks, sex workers, disabled folks, non-traditional relationship networks, kink and bdsm communities, BIPOC folks, folks navigating complex trauma, and those living at the intersections of many of these identities.

Part of individualizing care to each person involves considering the impact that family background and ancestry, sex, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, and socioeconomic status can have on wellbeing.
Please note, I currently only have room for new assessment clients. My practice is general in scope. I work with individuals presenting with anxiety, stress, obsessive-compulsive disorders, major depressive disorders, and other mood-related conditions. I also work with individuals presenting with personality disorders, trauma and other relational/interpersonal difficulties. I provide comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessment services (e.g., ADHD, ASD, brain Injury, personality and interpersonal functioning). Over time, my clients' symptoms reduce, and we shift focus to finding meaning and fulfillment in life.

I help women navigate mental health struggles related to pregnancy/postpartum, body image, disordered eating, self-esteem, stress/burnout, relationships, trauma, and sexuality.
It is so hard to be a woman in 2024! We received constant messages throughout our lives about what it means to be a woman and a mom. As a result, we internalize these unrealistic and patriarchal standards and can be left feeling like a failure when we inevitability do not measure up. No wonder so many women and moms feel stressed, burnt out, inadequate, and worthless! How do we cope? We beat ourselves up because we believe we are the problem. Many of us develop a strong inner-critic and unhelpful habits to cope with the pressure and the sensed failure. I promise you that you are not a failure - society has failed you.

Welcome. I am so glad you are here. I am Krista Olson, Registered Social Worker, and proud member of the Psychotherapy for You team. I honor the courage and vulnerability it takes to ask for help and to truly look at ourselves. It is a privilege to hold safe, meaningful space and collaborate with clients in the often delicate process of self exploration, experiential healing, and growth. I would love the opportunity to join you on your journey. I have always been fascinated by the “why” underlying human behavior and from a very young age felt a natural inclination to listen closely and understand people on a deep level.

Who is sex therapy for?

Sex problems are common in relationships. Many people want a better sex life and want to feel loved and desired by their partner. It is difficult for couples to resolve sexual problems on their own because people often feel ashamed to talk about their sexual desires fearing they are not normal, when in fact a very broad range of preferences and behaviors are normal. A sex therapist can help clarify this and other matters.

Why do people need sex therapy?

Many people do not know how to talk about their erotic needs or their emotional needs, both of which are addressed in sex therapy. Couples often live with sexual difficulties for years before seeking help, and in that time, partners may experience so much disappointment and alienation that they may fear their problems mean they are incompatible. Once people experience disappointment, it is difficult to find resolution without help.

What happens in sex therapy?

People have many misconceptions about what takes place in sex therapy. First, it is a form of talk therapy in which partners discuss their sexual concerns; it does not involve touching or physical exploration of any kind. Sex therapy typically helps couples get comfortable talking to each other about sex so that, in the privacy of their home life, they can openly discuss their sexual desires and make decisions about what they want to do. Couples are typically assigned activities to do at home that build intimacy skills.

What kinds of problems do sex therapists treat?

Very often, partners differ in their degree of sexual desire and struggle over how often to have sex. Or they may have fights about porn use or have difficulty connecting sexually after one partner is unfaithful. Men may have problems with premature ejaculation. Women may find themselves struggling to become aroused or to achieve an orgasm. Sometimes partners feel like they have lost the sense of attraction to their partner. These are all common issues dealt with in sex therapy.
