As a Registered Psychologist with over a decade of experience in anger management, I use EMDR therapy to address the root causes of your anger.
Anger seems to control your life. You find yourself lashing out at loved ones, colleagues, or even strangers. The smallest things set you off, and you're tired of feeling like a ticking time bomb. You've tried to control it, but the anger always finds a way to surface. You've pushed people away, damaged relationships, and maybe even jeopardized your career. Deep down, you know this isn't who you want to be, but you don't know how to change.

Struggling with a traumatic event, mental health and/ or addictions can feel like drowning in unseen waves; the waves of grief, anxiety, anger, fear, trauma, relational concerns, transitions, or self-worth. We try to soothe ourselves by acting out on ourselves, and others or engaging in behaviours that harm us and those we love. I believe that we can hold fragility and resilience, courage and fear, uncertainty and hope. You can begin the process of rebuilding and reclaiming all while staying afloat. Together, we will begin to anticipate those waves coming and not get pulled under but rather negotiate them with resounding courage.

My experiences include, but are not limited to supporting clients with anxiety, anger, grief/loss, depression, PTSD, substance abuse, addiction, learning challenges, including supporting LGBTQ2S+ individuals with their unique set of needs.
New to therapy? Nothing to worry about! Sometimes it's hard making sense and to talk about our feelings, experiences and patterns of behaviours. Empathetic by nature, I'm a progressive therapist, who uses a strength-based approach to help you and/or your partner achieve emotional balance and optimal mental health. My job is to ultimately help you feel comfort, acceptance, and to listen without judgement. Some days we'll laugh and realize those light 'ah ha!' moments while other days we will work hard to uncover those deeply personal truths. If you'd like to know more visit me at: alphacounselling.ca

I have over 15 years of experience working with individuals and groups in educational, community, and healthcare settings presenting with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use and/or addictive behaviours, relationship concerns, anger, grief and loss, self-care, self-esteem, and other mental health concerns.
*ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS * “ I can’t seem to shut my brain off”, “Why do I feel so anxious all the time?”, “ I actually don’t feel anything, I’m numb”. If any of these statements resonate with you and you want to explore them further I might be of help! I am a people person that truly believes in the power of human connection and therefore place a great importance on the right fit between a therapist and a client. My work is very much based on a collaborative approach because “You” know “You” the best. It’s important to me that you will feel comfortable and safe to explore and address any issues you are struggling with.

My clients range from those with relatively non-complicated daily issues to those suffering from significant trauma, depressed mood, or other concerns. I also have clients who would simply like to investigate their inner world and identify their strengths or areas for change. My philosophy is that although sometimes an impetus for change may come externally, it is always in an individual's control on how they may want to negotiate changing circumstances.

Have you ever felt stress in your life that outweighed your internal resources to cope? I think we all have at some point in our lives, and it can be overwhelming! For this reason, it is often helpful to seek support, learn new coping strategies, and talk about whatever is bothering us in a safe and judgment-free environment.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
