Applications

To apply for a postgraduate taught degree (e.g. a Master’s or PGCE), click the apply link at the bottom of your chosen course page. Follow the on-screen instructions to register an account and start your online application. You can also read our information about ‘how to apply for postgraduate study’.

To apply for a postgraduate research degree (e.g. a PhD or MPhil), read our page about ‘how to apply for postgraduate research’.

As a Portsmouth student you can use the quick and easy Fast Track route to apply for your Master’s.

We already know you, so we won't ask for references or a personal statement, saving you time and effort. And, with our Alumni tuition fee discount, you could save 20% on your fees.

We have a wide range of postgraduate courses in lots of subject areas. Take a look at our full course list for postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degrees, which you can filter by subject area, start date and course type (e.g. distance learning or learning at work). Our course pages include details of the course content, cost, teaching structure and career pathways.

You can also find out more about our subject areas to help you decide which subject to study or visit one of our upcoming Open Evenings.

Scholarship opportunities might be available for your chosen course.

Take a look at our loans, scholarships and bursaries page for information about funding a postgraduate taught degree, or our funding your research degree page if you’re interested in postgraduate research.

Home/EU students: contact our Student Finance Centre with your questions about finance and funding your studies  studentfinance@port.ac.uk

International (non-EU) students: contact our Global Team with your finance questions global@port.ac.uk.

Most of our postgraduate courses don’t have an application deadline. We strongly recommend you apply as early as possible before the start of your chosen course, so you don’t miss out on the critical opening weeks of your course and University events.

Some courses do have application deadlines. You’ll find this information on the course page.

If you apply after the start date, we can’t guarantee your application will be processed in time to make you an offer. If we can't make you an offer for the year you want to start, we will automatically consider you for the next year.

If you’re an international student and require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to apply for a study visa, please email globaladmissions@port.ac.uk for advice about CAS deadlines.

Please read our guidance on writing a personal statement for postgraduate courses.

For health professional courses, we screen personal statements for particular criteria. Our page about demonstrating the NHS values has advice about information to include in your application.

You can check the status of your application via our Applicant View system

If you have more questions about your application status, please contact us:

Please click here to access the login page.

Your username starts with UP and you would have received it in the ‘Welcome to your Applicant View’ email we sent you - double-check your junk/spam folder just in case it has gone in there. Make sure you don't add any accidental spaces or characters after the number (otherwise the system recognises these as a character and it won't work).

If you cannot remember your password, please use the password reset function to help.

If you experience any further technical problems logging in, please email servicedesk@port.ac.uk for help.

You can upload any qualifications we’ve asked for via the Applicant View system. If you are having difficulty uploading your documents, you can also email them to the relevant team who are handling your application:

EU & International applicants - globaladmissions@port.ac.uk

A transcript is a summary of a student's academic performance and progress to date. It lists the modules taken during each academic year, and the marks obtained in each module.

For university transcripts, an official copy will be printed on University transcript paper, which is branded and printed with the University crest.

Our Admissions team needs to review the information you provided. Once approved, this section in Applicant View will change from red/amber to blue, showing no further action is required. This is a manual process for our team. We aim to respond to all applicants as soon as we receive additional information.

Please keep checking your Applicant View and your emails in the days after submission for updates. You will hear from us soon.

Entry requirements

You can find the entry requirements for a particular course on its dedicated course page. You can search for our courses here.

If you are still unsure, please feel free to email your qualification(s) to admissions@port.ac.uk and one of our team will be able to help you. If you are an EU or International applicant, please email globaladmissions@port.ac.uk for advice.

We consider transfers for many of our courses at the beginning of each academic year.

Whether we can admit you depends on how well the modules you've completed so far match the modules on our course. If you’d like more information about this process, please read our guidance to Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Please get in touch with admissions@port.ac.uk for more information about transferring to us or, if you are an EU or International applicant, please email globaladmissions@port.ac.uk for advice.

When you apply to study with us, we’ll use the information you provide to determine your fee status as Home, EU or International. If we need more information, we might ask you to complete an online fee assessment questionnaire or provide further documents. If you’d like to know more about this process, please visit our Fee Assessment Information Page, or if you have any questions please contact feeassessment@port.ac.uk.

Once you've submitted your application, there are still some things to do before you start with us.

If you’ve applied for a postgraduate taught course (e.g. a Master’s), read our page about what to do after you apply for a Master’s.

If you’ve applied for a postgraduate research degree (e.g. a PhD), you can find information about the next steps on our how to apply for postgraduate research page.

Our MyPort website (for current students and PhD candidates) has lots of information to help you settle in. It’s useful to start getting your head around the MyPort website as you’ll be using it a lot.

If you’re taking a distance learning course, you’re still welcome to visit us in Portsmouth and take advantage of the on-campus facilities.

If you’d like to request a letter for this purpose please login to your Student View and click on the "My Student View" tab.

You will then see 6 blue boxes and to request the letter you need, please click on "Request Standard Letters" and pick the one you need. If you need something more specific or a copy of a transcript, please contact your MyPort Hub accordingly (list of email addresses here).

As a current UoP student, you will need to talk to your current course administration team (please contact your relevant MyPort Hub Service for your particular course - you can find the list of Hubs here along with their specific contact details) to seek advice about your next steps.

This application route is open to final year undergraduate students, completing their degree in the same year they want to start a Master's at the University of Portsmouth and Alumni of the University of Portsmouth, who graduated the year before — e.g. start 2024 but graduated 2023.

All eligible year students will be emailed (via their UP email addresses) from now onwards, providing details about the Fast Track service and encouraging you to submit an application through it. Benefits of applying through Fast Track include a shorter application form to complete, a guaranteed conditional offer for most Master’s courses and 20% off tuition fees.

Full information about our Fast Track service as well as the dedicated Fast Track apply links can be found on our dedicated web page here.

If you applied to us directly, you need to log in to your Applicant View and let us know your decision.

There is no set deadline to accept your offer, but we would recommend that you accept it as soon as you can so you have peace of mind that your place is secured.

Some courses do have an acceptance deadline, so please check your courses' web page for details or email your Admissions team for confirmation.

For any updates on your application, you can track its progress using your Applicant View portal.

If you require further help in relation to an update, please email our dedicated Global Admissions team, who are looking after your application, who will be able to assist at globaladmissions@port.ac.uk.

We can only defer applications that are Firm with us, so you would need to select us as your Firm choice before we can process this.

Once you have made us your Firm choice, please email admissions@port.ac.uk (for Home applicants) or globaladmissions@port.ac.uk if you are an EU or Overseas applicant, if you wish to defer your place.

Please note - not all of our courses will accept deferral requests so please check with the team processing your application if this is possible first.

If you are unable to provide an academic reference (if you’ve been out of university for a while, it may not be easy (or relevant) to get back in touch with your old lecturers or, you have not attended university before), we would be happy to accept a professional reference from your workplace.

If you cannot provide a professional reference then there are other referee’s who may be able to help you. Please email admissions@port.ac.uk (for Home applicants) or globaladmissions@port.ac.uk if you are an EU or Overseas applicant for further advice.

We aim to reply to applicants within 10 working days of a full application being submitted. Please note, this could be a request for further information to help us make a decision about your application, other information that may be required or, if we can make a decision straight away, whether we can make you a successful offer!

Please note, if you have applied for a research degree it usually takes us around 4 weeks to process it and give you a decision.

You don't have to give up work to get a university-level qualification.

You can get a degree and boost your performance at work with a degree apprenticeship or work-based Learning at Work degree course. If you want to fit in study around work and your other commitments, you can also choose a part-time or distance learning course.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) allows you to convert relevant university-level knowledge, skills and experience into credits you can put towards a qualification. RPL can come from previous study, employment, voluntary work and training courses, including courses and qualifications you didn't complete.

Please visit our dedicated web page here to view the different types of RPL and which one is most applicable to you.
