Adaptive Golf: Possibilities, Not Disabilities
PGA TOUR Superstore has long been an advocate for Adaptive Golf and this year is launching an important initiative to train more of their golf club fitters in Adaptive Golf club fitting, thereby expanding the services offered in our stores across the country.
Adaptive golf empowers individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory, health and age-related challenges to play and enjoy the game of golf. That’s just the beginning. This community has also discovered improvements in the quality of their lives, mind, body and soul.
One of PGA TOUR Superstore's long-time instructors and fitters and Georgia State Golf Association member and Adaptive Golf Association Board member, Tim Wilkes, has been leading PGATSS Adaptive Golf initiatives for many years and recently spearheaded PGATSS’ inaugural Adaptive Golf Summit held at our Performance Training Center.
Several of PGATSS’ most experienced club fitters from across the country were in attendance for the week-long training held at its metro-Atlanta headquarters. Tim and Dave Windsor, program director for the Georgia State Golf Association’s Adaptive Golf partnered with the Master Fitter/Adaptive Specialist from PING Golf, and two top physical therapists in the southeast to develop and launch this program in several PGATSS markets.

Also, in attendance were adaptive athletes from the Atlanta area with physical, mental and PTSD needs. They shared their experiences and their passion for the game. Not just from a perspective of enjoyment of the game, but more importantly the mental and social benefits golf has provided them.
Our club fitters learned to be mindful of adaptive athletes and the importance of getting into their world to understand how they learn and then teach in the adaptive golfer’s terms.
As part of the training, simulated tools were used to create different disabilities - from being blindfolded to simulate a blind person to using equipment simulating an amputee’s experience. This provided fitters with an understanding of the challenges the adaptive golfers face and ways that they can better help individuals with their game.
