Portrait of Rowan Niemisto

Rowan Niemisto

Every day, I modify episodes of “The Daily” to fit within the constraints of our radio programming. This involves editing down each episode to fit within specific time constraints, while maintaining the editorial quality and message, as well as adhering to radio technical specifications. Additionally, I work in postproduction for other newsroom shows, as well as contribute original music for a variety of Times programming.

Before joining The Times in 2021, I was an audio engineer working in programming at WDET, Detroit’s NPR station. Based in Detroit, I’ve consistently worked in video and audio engineering since graduating from the University of Michigan in 2015, where I majored in sociology and minored in music.

I share the values and adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in The Times’s Ethical Journalism Handbook. I believe in maintaining journalistic independence, which extends to technical and postproduction work. My goal is to support our colleagues’ editorial vision from preproduction, through sound design and composition, and postproduction mixing and publishing.
