Erin Nolan was a reporter covering New York City and the metropolitan region for The New York Times and a member of the 2023-24 Times Fellowship class. She left The Times in May 2024. Below is the last version of her Times bio.
What I Cover
I report on a variety of topics affecting people in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. I’ve driven upstate to cover severe flooding, written about a fatal cargo ship fire in Newark, and spent the day with adoptable cats and dogs while reporting on overcrowding at New York City animal shelters.
My Background
Before coming to The Times, I was an investigative reporter for the Times Herald-Record in the Hudson Valley. In that role, I wrote about a family’s attempts to learn why their father was fatally shot by police, how New York’s elderly and disabled residents are affected by a home-care worker shortage, and how 20th century urban renewal policies continue to affect upstate communities. Before moving to New York, I covered the North Shore of Massachusetts for The Salem News and southern New Hampshire for the Eagle-Tribune.
Over the years, I’ve covered national elections, evangelical megachurches, gentrification, environmental issues, social justice movements and more.
Journalistic Ethics
It is always my goal to tell stories in a clear, respectful, and unbiased way. I strive to be fair and accurate, and like all Times journalists, I adhere to the policies laid out in our Ethical Journalism Handbook.
