MLB Draft 2019: Yankees pick Delbarton’s Jack Leiter in 20th round | Can they convince Al Leiter’s son to skip college?

TORONTO — The Yankees sure made an interesting pick on the final day of the draft by selecting another Delbarton School product.

Two days after shortstop Anthony Volpe was picked in the first round 30th overall, the Yankees took one of his teammates on Wednesday in the 20th round, right-hander Jack Leiter.

This is fascinating because Al Leiter’s son was ranked as the 33rd-best prospect in the draft by MLB Pipeline and likely would have been a first- or second-round pick if he wasn’t sending strong signals that he intends to play college baseball at Vanderbilt.

But Leiter is a local kid and maybe the lure of the Yankees can be enough for him to turn pro now. Of course, the Yanks probably would have to pay Leiter first-round money to prevent him from attending college.

Here is a brief scouting report on Leiter from MLB.com:

“Jack Leiter has a solid four-pitch mix and knows what to do with all of his offerings. His fastball was in the 90-95 mph range all summer.”

A native of Toms River, N.J., former left-hander Al Leiter was picked by the Yankees in the second round of the 1984 draft, then went on to compile a 162-132 record in 19 big-league seasons with the Yankees (1987-89, 2005), Toronto Blue Jays (1989-95), Florida Marlins (1996-97, 2006) and Mets (1998-04).
