NWS 7-5-24

Northern New Jersey has the best chance to get hit by storms on Friday, July 5, 2024, according to the National Weather Service.National Weather Service

A hot, humid three days are ahead in New Jersey with chances of thunderstorms each day through Sunday.

Friday and Saturday will be the most uncomfortable, with heat advisories in effect for most of the state and a heat index — how hot it feels when temperatures are combined with humidity — climbing into the upper 90s and low 100s for a portion of the state, forecasters say.

While rain is a threat each day, none of the next three days should be a total washout, forecasters from AccuWeather.com said.

Heavy rain is possible Friday afternoon and evening, with the most pronounced threat along and north of the Interstate 78 corridor, according to the National Weather Service.

Afternoon highs in much of the state will soar into the low to mid-90s. Areas immediately along the Jersey Shore will have top temperatures only in the upper 70s and low 80s.

It stays warm and muggy overnight, with lows only falling into the 70s and forecasters saying there’s a 30% to 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Saturday will be just as stifling in New Jersey, with highs again in the 90s to go with a heat index that will reach or exceed 100 degrees in many inland areas. Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms could pop up along and southeast of the Interstate 95 corridor in the afternoon and evening ahead of another very warm overnight.

Conditions should improve for Sunday, with partly sunny skies and only a slight chance of thunderstorms. It will still be plenty warm, with highs of around 90, just not nearly as humid as the previous two days.

A heat advisory will be in effect for Friday and Saturday for a wide swath of the state:

  • Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Union and Passaic: From noon Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday. A heat index as high as 100 degrees is likely.
  • Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem, Somerset: From 10 a.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday. The heat index could reach as high as 105 degrees.
