N.J. man admits stabbing ex’s new boyfriend in fatal July 4 attack, cops say

A Cumberland County resident charged with stabbing a man to death on July 4 believed the victim was in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend, according to court documents.

Selvin Omar Garcia-Ramirez, 21, of Bridgeton, is charged with murder and a weapons offense in the stabbing death of Edwin Lopez-Parra, 26, also of Bridgeton.

Police responded to the 200 block of Atlantic Street in Bridgeton around 3:15 a.m. and found the wounded victim bleeding and unconscious outside his residence. He died of his injuries while emergency responders were rushing him to a hospital, police said.

Multiple people inside the victim’s residence at the time of the stabbing chased the alleged killer, but lost sight of him, police said in an affidavit of probable cause filed with the charges.

Garcia-Ramirez was arrested hours later. During an interview, he allegedly admitted stabbing Lopez-Parra multiple times because he was angry and believed his ex-girlfriend was “involved with him sexually,” police said. Garcia-Ramirez was also involved in a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend hours before the stabbing, according to police.

The defendant’s appointed public defender did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment on Monday.

Garcia-Ramirez remains jailed pending court hearings.
