Parent: It has been an amazing 1st year at PRISMS for my son. Coming from a local private school, we were initially concern about the transition to this new school, school did a wonderful job and made the transition process incredibly smooth. PRISMS offers top-notch programs from high school toward college level courses. Some course works are challenging and competitive, but my son could always find teacher and senior student to help. We also find the teachers at this school are very nice, supportive, and encouraging. The student life is colorful, lively and dynamic, school had many weekend activities for both day and boarding students. PRISIMS is a small and close community, everyone here is friendly and welcoming. Despite the changes over the years, the overall mission of the school - to serve gifted learners within a caring community - has remained constant. Senior: the academics here are fantastic. many teachers are life-changing. hw can be hard to manage, especially if you have other activities, but most teachers are lenient with extensions. the culture is weird. most school events are a bit lame tbh. you will get to know most students (or at least their faces). students can be pretty competitive abt grades. lots of stress culture. many students do not have the highest EQ lmao. i would say <10% of students are not white or Asian. lots of clubs during lunch! i would recommend participating in an activity at a local HS for a taste of the more traditional HS experience. many DA parents are helicopter parents which is not the most fun thing for the school & students. the administration can be a bit overprotective of students too. i've had mostly great interactions with admin members, but some things that admins do seem downright unreasonable to me. i am extremely thankful for my experience at DA and excited to leave for college!... Senior: NCSSM is a top-notch high school. The academics are unmatched, the research opportunities are on par with universities, and the extracurriculars make campus a community. This school is extremely challenging when it comes to work load, but there is copious support available to help you to succeed and you really get out of it what you put into it. Between a required college readiness class, a personalized recommendation letter from your counselor for every student, and the residential experience 2 years early, you would be hard-pressed to find a school that prepares you for college better. Automatic acceptance and free tuition to NC system schools doesn't hurt either. A lot of people accepted to NCSSM come in with very high expectations, and I think it's important to remember that this is still a public school. Parent: My son completed his first year of middle school at Pingry. My son is an ambitious, sporty, introvert-extrovert and the school so far has been a perfect fit for him. A nice blend of focus on academics, community, and sports. I do sense that not every new student had the same experience in making new friends as my son did, but I think that would be the case in any new school environment. The one opportunity for the school to attract more diverse candidates - many Asian and Indian groups are represented, but other groups are an opportunity. Academics: there was about 1 hour of homework 4 days a week, and a focus on quizzes/assignments and team projects, rather than massive final tests. Parent: As a parent of two students who started in kindergarten and are in or completed high school (and an alum myself), I think Riverdale simply is the best and I have only seen it become more impressive over my 30 years of engagement. My children received an exceptional education, have benefited from the character education program, enjoyed and learned from the outdoors on 2 beautiful campuses. Both played and enjoyed sports teams & loved the arts programs. They had incredible teachers and deans who cared and helped them at every step of the way. As parents, we were always impressed with how well they knew our children, and would take the time to meet with them individually as well as meet with us when needed. Junior: I wanted more from high school than a 9am to 3pm lifestyle. I am sure that I would do well at my home high school, but would there be a community where I would feel support? The Hotchkiss School has small classes with individualized instruction. The campus community is diverse. There are co-curricular programs (for me Varsity Soccer in Fall and hiking, theater and dance in Spring) and numerous clubs. When I was looking for a club that did not exist, an Advisor worked with students to develop the materials needed. I even studied abroad! I learned how to organize my days with help from Hotchkiss' "The Learning Center." While each day is very busy and even demanding, I have free time to meet up with friends. My teachers are approachable and I feel comfortable speaking to them. That is how I feel, in general, about Hotchkiss- I belong and I am comfortable! The smaller student body allows for smaller class sizes and more personalized instruction. For the most part, the teachers are clearly passionate about their subjects and make a noticeable investment in their students' success. However, the school's small size means that certain activities like band and robotics suffer because there simply aren't enough students to maintain competitive programs. These activities still offer valuable experiences, but are unable to reach the same standards as similar programs in large public schools.
