Alum: This comfortable school has lovely teachers, facilities, sports, and spirit. For some reason, the school's most tough, time-consuming subject is English. Some of the teachers teach it in an excellent creative and analytical manner while others make it extremely hard and tie it to unwanted leftist, woke ideology like in the senior course (Critical Race Theory, Queer Theory, Feminist Theory, Gender Studies, Marxist/Leninist Theory), drawing attention away from higher pursuit in useful subjects. Students spend so much time on "English" to keep their grade up that a lot end up majoring in similar topics in college, because they are unable to compete with top students in business, law, medicine, and technology. If the English taught more grammar/reading comprehension/inference in a rigorous way, students would be better prepared for the SAT/ACT and graduate free from woke ideology. Parent: Our daughter has had a terrific experience at Greenwich Academy. She loves school, she loves her friends, and she loves her teachers. The facilities are amazing, the academics are top-notch, but most importantly the community is really strong. My daughter feels incredibly noticed by her teachers. She is her best self at school because she is supported and encouraged to try new things and be the best she can be. She is a strong and confident young lady as a result. She is a decent athlete, and has enjoyed playing field hockey and lacrosse. The girls support each other and the school has a lot of spirit which makes sporting events really fun. I won't go into the specifics of my personal experience at BC, but I've made great friends and the culture and vibe is very warm for the most part. Socially, at least by the time you are an upperclassman, students are friendly and welcoming with little drama. But I know people's experiences would vary greatly, I may have been lucky. I'm from another borough and have a long commute to BC. Almost all social life, especially as 9th/10th grader, occurs in Park Slope or neighboring areas, and so do most students. So if you go, be prepared to schlep back and forth a lot if you live far away. You'll make friends probably, there is a good mix of people. It is very easy to (sort of) for a school to identify top level 8th graders and see them graduate at the top of the class. It is far harder to identify outstanding 5 year olds. What we have seen at Brunswick is that the top end of the school academically is vastly over represented by those who entered in the early years. To me, that says that the education is excellent. I am also completely stunned that anyone would suggest that the academics of the school is not top notch and that children would be better off going to a boarding school.
