Areas of Research

Find a Researcher

We go to great lengths to learn as much as we can through research, and turn what we’ve learned into the best care possible. Our physicians and scientists perform many different types of studies in a wide range of medical areas. We conduct lab-based research, participate in clinical trials and studies working with patients, and we do translational research as well, turning lab-based discoveries into practical clinical applications.

Primary Areas of Research

We perform research in a variety of areas that affect kids with all kinds of conditions. Much of our work is concentrated around four large medical areas, so we refer to them as our primary areas of research.

Through these areas, we’re working to help the children that we treat as well as kids everywhere.

Asthma & Cystic Fibrosis

Nemours Children's is working to help improve the lives of millions of children who struggle to breathe. Our work in asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF) is concentrated in pharmacogenetics and translational research, and in lung research. We participate in numerous studies and pediatric clinical trials of new medicines and therapies to help children with asthma and cystic fibrosis breathe — and live — better.

Cancer Biomarkers & Therapeutics

The Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research (NCCCR) combines the research we perform with the medical care we give. Our overarching goal is to achieve a 100 percent cure rate of childhood cancers — and with minimal side effects. Our center is a place where scientists, doctors, patients, families and the community can come together to improve children’s health.

Diabetes & Obesity

The Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders is a comprehensive research program at Nemours. Our work is closely linked with both the care we deliver and the health education regarding obesity we extend to the children we treat and our community. We conduct studies of our own, and participate in national and international multicenter collaborative studies.

Emergency Medicine Research

Our research aims to enhance pediatric care in emergency settings. We are part of a national network conducting impactful, multi-site research studies. Our team furthers quality initiatives and innovative strategies to benefit children everywhere.

Neurodevelopmental & Musculoskeletal Disease

Nemours is an international leader in research on neurodevelopmental and musculoskeletal (orthopedic) disorders in children. We have several world-class pediatric labs in the Delaware Valley and Florida working to help children with musculoskeletal diseases like skeletal dysplasia, scoliosis, cerebral palsy and more.

Research Theme Areas

Of course, as long as there are conditions that cause medical problems for children, we’ll do our very best to research the best ways to treat them. A number of medical conditions may not fall under what we call primary areas of research. But rest assured, we do research in many other areas as well. We do a lot of our research in interdisciplinary centers that assist many different medical areas in diagnosing and learning more about specific conditions.

Applied Clinical Genomics (CACG)

The Center for Applied Clinical Genomics (CACG) works to turn new genetic information discovered by our researchers into tangible improvements in patient care. This translational research (turning lab-based discoveries into practical clinical applications) is focused on understanding genetics and the basis of genetic disorders in children.

Clinical Diagnostics

This center provides diagnostic testing services in support of patient care in a variety of clinical medical specialties both inside and outside Nemours. In the Delaware Valley and Florida, we use and develop lab-based tests that can provide new or improved information to help diagnose and monitor the treatment of children.

Clinical Research and Development

The Nemours Center for Pediatric Clinical Research and Development (CPCRD) fosters the development of state-of-the-art clinical and translational research (turning science into practical applications to improve patient health).

Health Care Delivery Science

Nemours’ Center for Health Care Delivery Science studies the influences affecting children’s health care.

More on Cardiac Research

We’re involved in a wide variety of research work and studies on cardiovascular surgery, transplants, interventional cardiology procedures, preventive cardiology and the genetic causes of heart malformations.
