We lived nearby and it's my favourite place on the world..however it will be hot and crowded in august. And I mean hot.
I'd go in May or Oct half terms.
Car hire a must.

Sirmione is lovely, peschiera del garda and limone also.
Just have a mooch round the lakes, go on a boat trip and cycle round the walking paths. Eat all the gelato.
Yes July will also be hot. We lived there for four years and coped fine but got used to it.
Also the other lakes are beautiful too.

It will be really hot, we went in June and it was 36c. Make sure your hotel has air con - some don't. We liked the lemon museum at Limone though I seem to remember some of the reviews on Tripadvisor moaning that it was all about lemons. Also we took the cable car up Monte Baldo and did a longish walk at the summit, which was marginally less boiling. We stayed in Malcesine and you can get boats across the lake to various others places.

@butpint Thankyou. On your experience is it bad for mosquitoes in that area?

Malcesine is a lovely town to visit, I think you can walk to a castle/museum type place at the top. Also cable cars from Malcesine to the top of the mountain. GardaLand theme park was great fun! We used the ferries to get around, and buses. Didn't hire a car. It will be HOT! But it's a beautiful place! There was a beautiful waterfall towards the north of the lake - can't remember the name, but it was cooler.

@lavagal
I don't recall it being but we had tiger mosquitoes where we lived which are complete arseholes and bite through clothes.
We took some ginormous b vitamin supplements from holland and Barrett and that stopped them, they didn't need repellent.
We didn't have kids when we lived there so this link is useful. Now have a baby and will be taking her as soon as we can. It's stunning there.

The north of the lake is great for water sports so sailing paddle boards etc so worth a trip. Jamaica beach at Sirmione is lovely and a good day out. It will be busy so driving will take time around the lake. There is Garda land as well if you fancy a theme park. It is really easy to access the lake for swimming and the ferries are fab. We had a great holiday.

Caneva water park for your son. There is also a safari park in Affi. Lots of ferries, visit Sirmione. It will probably be very hot! 🥵

We stayed in Peschiera del Garda and did Lake trips to Sirmione, Limone & Malcesine. All gorgeous! Garda Land is great if you enjoy theme parks. We also did day trips to Venice, Milan & Verona - all easily accessible.

We've been multiple times in August & whilst it's hot, it's fine! Have a fab time as it's one of my favourite places!

Arco. The little town and castle.

I've been in August and it was super hot - just as I like it! Beautiful by the lake.

We stayed at Peschiera del Garda so it depends where on the lake you are? But we did boat trips on the lake to other towns like Bardolino, you can go to Gardaland if your son likes theme parks, we hired pedalos on the lake quite often. We also took the train to Verona for the day. Mainly we just hired sun loungers and chilled by the lake and the kids swam and messed about on the pedalos.

I live nearer Lake Iseo, but love Riviera San Virgilio for a gorgeous ‘beach’ day on Garda. There are tons of shady beds and a lovely bar.

@lavagal
Welcome 🤗 enjoy, it will be fine, just get air con and stay out direct/midday sun.
There's nothing like the lakes.
