Where would you base yourself for 4/5 nights? Want to cycle, raft, paddleboard and swim in lakes and pools.

I've been to both but when the kids were much younger.

Seefeld. For Innsbruck you would need to travel to access many activities.

Good point. And suppose it's not too far away from Innsbruck to pop in for an evening.

Seefeld. 2 outdoor pools. Funicular / cable cars. Easy to do a day trip to Innsbruck or Mittenwald in Germany. In the summer hotels will give you a free public transport pass for the local buses and there are activities laid on every day.

Just jumping on could you base yourself at Seefeld and not need a car? What’s the public buses like? We’ve stayed in Morzine in the French alps in the summer and the multi pass gave you access to the buses and activities all inclusive and I wondered if Austria had a similar pass?

Yes - they do a similar pass - included access to one of the pools too I think. We spent a week there without a car.

Thanks I’m going to bookmark it as a plan for summer hols as it’s closer to the airport than the Geneva transfer was. We’ve not driven in Austria before but I’m guessing if we had to hire a car it would be like Switzerland or France

I’d stay in Seefeld as the activities-hiking, swimming etc are right there but Innsbruck is only half hour by train. Easier to travel in to a city for a day out but hassle to travel out to do activities.

Kids go free on the local train too as I recall. It was about 30 mins to Innsbruck, 30 to Mittenwald. Bus to Leutasch Gorge.

It's a great idea. We need to get to Area 47 or somewhere else where we can raft. I'll look into it.

Anyone been as far south as Worthersee (with umlauts but don't have them on my keyboard)?
Fancy staying in 2 places on our trip. And sounds like weather a bit more guaranteed there. Never been that far south apart from interrailing through Villach many moons ago.

@MrsRachelDanvers I think we will go for Seefeld.

We had a week in Seefeld last month and loved the area for walking. We didn't need a car and the free buses (with tourist pass) made it very easy to get around and explore.

How did you get to Seefeld? Train? We are flying into Munich so it's 3 and a half hours from there by train.

We'd come from Vienna to Innsbruck. We got a train back to Munich Hbf though but I remember it was more like 1.5 hours - via Garmisch. I will investigate

Dh is planning to visit Garmisch while based in Munich , train being an hour half/two hours. You might be able to take a post bus to meet a train there.

We drove loads in Germany and Austria and it’s incredibly straightforward. The traffic around Munich is always hideous though.

I think there might be slightly faster trains depending which one you get? The train tickets are very good value-especially the ones which are non ICE (high speed). It’s been a long time since I got the train from Munich but I remember it being straightforward. It was a great experience for youngsters-I got the Bolzano train with the kids once and it was full of interesting characters! Really clean and seats had footrests. Deutsche Bahn website can be in English too.
If you drive, and you hire the car at Munich, make sure you buy the little ticket which allows you to use the motorways on Austria otherwise you’ll get a hefty fine. You can get them at service stations just over the border. If you’re travelling by train, Seefeld is a good base as you can do a lot without a car with a day or two on Innsbruck if you want to visit a city. With a car, you have a wide choice of destinations, some of which include cards for the lifts which otherwise are quite expensive. Achensee is lovely-big lake with nice resorts. I’m quite envious-the Austrian Tirol is wonderful with very nice hotels and good food, mostly local and often organic.

@MrsRachelDanvers thank you for that. We are probably going to book 2 places so might have a look at Aachensee too. Ever been to Wolfgangsee?
