Where to stay in Amsterdam with kids

We're planning to go to Amsterdam (probably, finally narrowed it down to this or Barcelona) for a few days in Easter. Can anyone recommend either a hotel/aparthotel or AirBnB for 2 adults and a 6yr old?

Would you consider duinrell? It's fant for kids and can go to Amsterdam for the day.

Our kids loved duinrell and from there we visited Amsterdam, Delft etc

It's a great suggestion but not this time. We're going to Center Parcs the month before so wanted to actually stay in the city for this one.

We got an Airbnb which was nice but they can be quite small, like all of us in a studio. We did it for 3 nights which was about enough. Amsterdam is quite small so everywhere is a short walk or tram ride or bus ride. The Airbnb was in Westerpark which was a nice area in itself and we walked right into the centre in about 20 minutes.

Also been to duinrell and while the kids loved it, I hated it. The park is good but the chalets are horrible. Tiny rooms, uncomfortable beds and very basic kitchen and bathrooms.

Yes it's true the accommodation is basic even if you book the most expensive direct with the park.

Thanks, I'll have another look at AirBnB. We stayed in a lovely Aparthotel in Berlin last year that was perfect so was hoping to find something similar but no luck so far!

We stayed in a house boat in north amsteram on air bnb.

Was amazing, easy to get everywhere and quiet. Fantastic facilities.

Make sure you leave enough time for Nemo (if its your thing) my daughter was enthralled and easily took a whole day.

Such an amazing city and so child friendly all the museums are ace with interactive children sections. We made good use of the Amsterdam card but depends what you want to see.

Amsterdam has become tourist overload, like Barcelona and Venice.

So be prepared for millions of tourists, especially at Easter time.

I think now it's 17 million per year with 850 K inhabitants.

For a 6-year-old go to Nemo - Science Museum, like a sunken ship to the left of Centraal Station - 10 minute walk over the bridge.

Or Artis, the zoo, it's great with a garden with Buddha, café with kids playground, animal farm and a lovely aquarium - Tram 9 I think from CS. Hey! He will even love those tram rides!

Just get all the info about public transport etc. before you go. I think "I Amsterdam dot com" will give you a few pointers. (OV public transport chip card etc, (Oyster?) gives you access to the whole country if uploaded (20 Euro), there's a train to the beach, takes half an hour.

DO NOT hire a bike! Locals drive like maniacs on their way to work etc. and WILL RUN YOU OVER not on purpose! those stoned LOL tourists not looking! while checking their mobile!!

And as with trams, cars, bikes, only cross on the zebra/green light crossing.
Oh yea, North Amsterdam is on the ferry behind CS, also great for a little boat trip across the harbour.... Again, another 20K bikes to dodge. :-) But you get to see barges, etc.

Have a great time! Amsterdam is amazing.

Thanks so much for all the tips!

@MrsRolly that houseboat is fully booked until Feb 2020 but will keep that idea in mind when I look through AirBnB.

Victoria Hotel has a swimming pool and is really central, opposite the train station.

Wow! I would say don't discount that area as it is so easy to get into town. Have an amazing trip.

We stayed at the hotel Kimpton de Witt. a bit pricey but easy walking distance from the station and such a lovely hotel. The trip advisor reviews will vouch for it!! Lots of people laughed at us when we said we were going to Amsterdam with children but we had a wonderful time, it will always be a special place to me.
