Nature names for both girls and boys

htbzLlhcR · 16/12/2020 15:48

I adore nature and would love ideas for baby names relating to nature. They could either be:

  • A name that is an actual item from nature (e.g. plants like Lily, or precious stones like Amber)
  • A name derived from something from nature e.g. Oliver for a boy, relating to the olive tree.
  • A name that has an actual meaning relating to nature, or the earth (e.g. Ava which is Latin for Bird)

There are a few I can think of for girls that I like (though I'm not keen on Poppy / Rose / Rosie / Holly) but I can't think of many for boys.

Girls:
Ivy
Ava (though this is very popular recently)
Iris
Fern
Amber
Hazel
Lily (or derivatives like Lillian /Lillia)
Violet
Heather

Boys:
Ash (as in the tree)
Oliver

Thank you for your ideas.

To be pedantic, 'Avis' is Latin for bird.
I think it sounds nicer than Ava, though there is the car-hire company.

Ava is a vesion of Eve. www.behindthename.com/name/ava-1
As previous poster says, it is very popular.

I like Laurel for a girl too. Maybe Rónán (little seal), Dylan (I think it's something like "born from the ocean"), Colm (dove), or Jasper for a boy

Ivy, Amber and Lily are really nice. Heather is good too and unusual now. I like Ash as a nickname for Ashley or Ashton but it reminds me of cigarettes on its own! Oliver is a lovely classic name.

Thank you all for your suggestions! My short list so far is the following but I'm still trying to decide. I also have some non-nature names but trying to lean towards nature as I love the connection.

Girl:
Amber
Eden
Hazel
Ivy
Iris
Lily / Lillia

Boy:
Dylan
Ewan / Euan
Leo
Micah (as in the mineral, Mica)
Oliver (current favourite)
Rowan

Our surname is 3 syllables, so I am leaning towards shorter names - but 'Oliver' is still remaining my favourite for a boy. The middle name either way will be 1 syllable so the length doesn't matter too much really.

Still open to more nature name ideas!

I'd never be able to use it but I like Esmerelda which means Emerald.

Raven.
If someone had suggested this to me before I’d watched the programme about the Yorkshire Shepherdess and her family I would have thought it a slightly odd choice for a girl - but far from it. I think it’s lovely.
I also like the name Leif for a boy - there is a Leif in my eldest’s class at school pronounced more like Layfe than Leaf

Eden is one of my all time favourite girls name. Hazel and amber are nice to.
For boys I’d go with Rowan, Peter or Jasper.

Nice list of names @htbzLlhcR @htbzllhcR

Girl list
Amber - love this, a good time to use the name too as its popularity has been falling for years, about to drop out of the top 100 names
Eden - nice name
Hazel - love this name, not overused, is about number 150 in the charts
Ivy - really love this but more popular than your other choices as is number 12 in charts and still on the rise
Iris - love this
Lily / Lillia - I love simplicity of Lily and its numbers have been falling since 2010 so a good time to pick this name

Boy:
Dylan - love this name
Ewan / Euan - nice
Leo - nice
Micah (as in the mineral, Mica) - unusual, I like it
Oliver (current favourite) - a classic. It's popular but not in a trendy way as it's timeless
Rowan - prefer for a girl and dislike nickname Row. A very 2020 trendy name, rising fast up the top 100 charts for first time in history and at the same time as similar sounding Roman with M (which is top 50 and the fastest rising boy name and popping up everywhere, especially celeb babies!). Still on the rise. I'd avoid

Bracken is one of my favourite boy names.

Eden or Storm are nice for a boy or girl.

Summer or Autumn for a girl.

I know a little boy called Moss. I wasn't keen at first but it's grown on me.

No pun intended.

Eden is definitely up there, it's so lovely isn't it. I've never heard "Bracken" before. The season names are pretty but I wouldn't personally use them.

"Storm" seems to have popped up quite a few times on MN... and sounds very fierce which I do like in a name. But unfortunately, it just reminds me of the whiny subject of Tim Minchin's song / beat poem about a woman named Storm, that's all I can think of when I see that name haha!

Thank you for all of this info, it's really helpful to know the relative popularity of each name so I appreciate that. I'm after a nice name that's not completely outlandish but not overly popular or trendy either.

Interestingly, my least favourite from the girl list was Ivy and the least favourite from the boy list was Rowan.
