Best cheap central London hotel?

Any suggestions please. We are wanting to go and do the London thing in February half term.

3 nights. Need a room for 2 adults and 1 child.

Another one for Premier Inn here, but at London Bridge (round the back of Borough Market). So many buses and tubes nearby, the NR station, but is in a quiet back street.

Also, try guesthouses and hotels a bit further out like in Camden, Greenwich, Putney or Richmond. Further away but on booking.com you get better deals and see another side to London.

Another vote for Premier Inn. We’ve stayed in quite a few including the ones mentioned and they are always clean/safe/roomy and a reasonable price.

Just as a general trick if your travel plans will allow, include a Sunday night. Three nights in Covent Garden Travelodge is £426 starting on the Sunday, £544 starting Monday ...

We’ve jst booked for half term in feb for two adults and two children, at the Putney premier inn which has a tube straight across the road and it’s cost £130 for three nights. It’s not central but there’s plenty of shops and food outlets locally and easy enough to get into central London. We’ve stayed there before and it’s clean and comfy enough, very cheap as well!

That’s £130 in total, not per night, it’s for the weekend at the end of half term as the following Monday is an inset day.

Great Permier Inn on Hogarth roundabout in Chiswick. 15 min walk to Turnham Green Tube or short bus ride / they do great deals. My colleague stays there a lot and says it's fab, quite and cheap.

Ibis London Docklands Excel. We got it for £55 a night (midweek) - it's quite basic but it's quite easy to get about from there.

Just one bit of advice. We generally found that even with railcards etc the money you save by staying outside London is swallowed up by train and tube fares into London.

We always stay at the Pullman Hptel between Euston and St Pancras. We book through Booking.com. It is a bit dearer than Travelodge but 100 times nicer.

If you have a railcard, you get a discount on London travel cards if you buy them from a mainline station, rather than a tube station.

Our bargains in past as a family have been Travelodge Covent Garden and Novotel Tower Bridge.

My top tip is the Millenium Gloucester. It’s usually fairly cheap and right by Gloucester Road tube in a very well lit area so safe and accessible. You have to book through their own website as I’ve never seen it on the booking sites (ithink the bulk of their business is conferences, aircrew and overseas guests).

I recently stayed in Brixton. My hotel/hostel was diabolical so I won't recommend it. However, the area was great, bustling and busy and superb for transport links.

Aridane - We will be driving. On the first night we will probably stay near Epson to visit family. We can leave the car there and travel into London.

We will do the London Eye, Science and History Museum, Thriller Show, and I want to show DD Buckingham Palace and probably do an open top bus tour.

I don't plan to do it again over the next few years and it means we can add it on to a family visit.

I think we are thinking Greenwich. We used to live nearby and had our wedding reception at the Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich, so we could visit there.

I'm north of the river so could be prejudiced but I would say definitely stay close to a tube station, as central as you can. It makes London so much quicker. Also I wouldn't bother with an open top bus, costly and cold in February. Just get normal buses outside rush hour. Go to Greenwich on the DLR and sit at the front if you can because it's driverless. Children usually love it. Come back by riverboat. The museums will be busy at half term so save them for the Monday, assuming your half term break is the same as London schools.

I booked a night at Premier Inn Kensington Olympia for 57 pounds (not including breakfast) for 1 night later this month. This was booked months ago, non refundable rate. Not expecting a huge room or luxery for that price but the location is good.

The premier inn or travelodge located near Bank/monument. Fantastic location especially if visiting at a weekend as the City is really quiet but easily accessible to west end. You can walk over to borough market, across Tower bridge, amazing old and modern architecture in the surrounding streets, we walked all the way to Leicester Square in around 30mins, but tube is obviously quicker and right in your doorstep.

I like the Lancaster Gate area, I've stayed there twice recently. Columbia Hotel and Lancaster Gate hotel (second was slightly nicer)
Walking distance from Paddington, a central line tube station very near by, you're on the edge of Hyde Park which is lovely and you can walk into Oxford Street if you're so inclined.

As per PPs, I often stay in Premier Inns. There are loads around and you can search using the map, so you can see how convenient it is vs. cost. A lot aren't central (thinking places like Wandsworth or Putney) but are near transport and a lot cheaper than in centre. There are also the 'Hub' hotels by Premier Inn but they are pretty small - definitely no more than two average sized adults!

Travelodge can also be pretty good, try looking at the City Road location's availability.
