Our verdict

An A+-rated heat pump appliance, the Candy BCTD H7A1TE integrated tumble dryer is twice as efficient as a condenser equivalent, offering a 7kg capacity that easily accommodates up to 35 adult-sized t-shirts.

With a generous 16 programmes, you’ll find lots of options to support a busy family life - from the convenient twenty-minute quick dry to easy iron and refresh cycles that can make light work of your piles of school uniforms. Alternatively, you can let the intelligent Candy Simply-Fi choose for you, selecting the best cycle based on the fabrics you add to the drum.

This tumble dryer uses accurate smart sensor dry technology, constantly monitoring the water in the drum and stopping it automatically when the clothes are suitably dry. While larger families may find the 7kg capacity a little on the small side, Mumsnetters rate this tumble dryer for its overall efficiency and ease of maintenance, with an easy access water reservoir located in the door.

If you’re after a built-in appliance at a more budget-friendly price, the Beko Pro DTIKP71131W is certainly worth considering. Despite its affordable price tag, this 7kg integrated tumble dryer has an excellent energy rating and a varied selection of programmes.

While the programmes may not be as fast as condenser tumble dryers, this heat pump’s lower temperatures, combined with accurate drying sensors, help prevent overdrying - protecting your clothes from shrinkage or fading and keeping them looking their best.

I have a Hoover one. I bought it a couple of years ago and I could only seem to find that and a candy one. Neither had great reviews but it's fine. It takes a little longer than my old condenser but I find that it may sometimes feel damp when it's still hot but if you take it out it is dry. The water container is in the door which is much better than my old condenser.

Our verdict

Another energy-efficient choice, this Hoover integrated tumble dryer conserves and recycles the heat generated in the drum, claiming to be up to 50% cheaper to run than a more traditional condenser dryer.

From rapid dry cycles to specialist hygiene programmes to remove germs and bacteria, it offers a wide range of programmes that can be tailored to your needs. If you’re unsure, you can even take a picture of the label and the hOn app will do the rest, providing peace of mind by automatically selecting the best cycle for your fabrics.

We love the smart digital display that tells you how long is left on the cycle, however, some reviewers did experience condensation during the cycle, preferring to leave the kitchen door slightly ajar during use.

Our verdict

It may set you back a little more, but if you really want to take the stress out of laundry, this 7kg WiFi-enabled tumble dryer could be just the ticket.

As well as an easy-to-use LED screen, the smart hOn app allows you to choose programmes, set timers, control your appliance remotely and even monitor your energy use, helping you conveniently fit the laundry around your day. For the really time-pressed amongst you, Alexa or Google Home can tell you how long is left on the cycle, without you needing to move a muscle.

As with our other best picks above, this heat pump design dries efficiently to keep your energy bills under control. While cycles will take longer than condenser dryers, the Haier comes with Super Fast technology, shaving 30% off drying times, regardless of the size of your load. It’s worth mentioning however that some reviewers found clothes tend to ball up and crease, so you shouldn't leave your clothes in the drum too long once the cycle has finished.

How much does it cost to use a tumble dryer?

The cost of running your tumble dryer will depend on both the type of dryer, the cycles you use and how often you choose to run it.

According to tumble dryer manufacturer Haier, heat pump dryers cost as little as 63p per cycle to run. On that basis used twice a week, you can expect around £75 a year added to your energy bills. This is almost half the cost of a condenser tumble dryer.

As well as running your tumble dryer during off-peak electricity times, you can reduce the cost of your tumble dryer by opting for eco cycles wherever possible.

What’s the most cost-effective type of tumble dryer?

Heat pumps are by far the most energy-efficient choice. While their programmes can take a little longer due to lower operating temperatures, they also offer excellent performance while protecting your clothes from over-drying.

Should you go for an integrated heat pump, condenser or vented tumble dryer?

Vented tumble dryers are few and far between these days, especially when looking for an integrated appliance. The decision therefore will be between condenser and heat pump, with heat pump being the most accessible choice when choosing a built-in model.

Condenser tumble dryers are quick and easy to use, drawing in and heating cool air from the room to dry your clothes inside the drum. Any steam is then turned into water and collected in a removable tank which you need to empty regularly.

Heat pump tumble dryers tend to be more costly initially, however, they run at lower temperatures and recycle the heat generated during the cycle, making them far more energy-efficient and cheaper to run in the long term.

What’s the best integrated tumble dryer to buy?

We think the Candy BCTD H7A1TE is the integrated budget tumble dryer you can buy today. A great all-rounder for most families, this easy-to-use tumble dryer offers accurate drying sensors, WiFi connectivity and a wide range of programmes to suit all lifestyles.
