Best hot water dispensers 2024

There’s nothing quite like a fresh cup of coffee to start your morning, but it can be easy to overfill your kettle, boiling more water than you need and using more energy as a result.

Hot water dispensers can make a great alternative to the best kettles, particularly for those with limited mobility or who regularly prepare drinks for one. Dispensing one cup at a time, often in a variety of mug sizes, hot water dispensers can be more energy efficient than a kettle by boiling the exact amount of water required. Quick and easy to operate at the touch of a button, with no lifting or pouring required, they make a great addition to your kitchen countertop or bedside table.

To bring you our pick of the best hot water dispensers you can buy today, we first scoured the Mumsnet forums to gain valuable feedback on the models our users have tried and loved, gathering options to suit every budget. We then researched and scrutinised authentic customer reviews and the opinions of industry experts to ensure we're only recommending the very best.

I loved our Brita one cup. Great in a hard water area, but it would be better if it could dispense a larger volume of water as it didn't fill my larger cups.

Our verdict

With a stylish and modern stainless steel design, the Breville BRITA HotCup Hot Water Dispenser makes a great alternative to a kettle, with a choice of nine different cup sizes that can be selected with a simple turn of a dial. While some reviewers found extra-large mugs were not quite full from the highest volume setting, the handy stop button allows you to quickly add the exact extra amount that you need.

Boiling a cup of water in just 50 seconds with no pouring required, it’s ideal for those with limited or restricted hand mobility, though the water tank will need refilling every so often.

A huge plus point of this model is the removable BRITA water filter, which helps remove impurities during dispensing. As well as improving the taste of your morning brew, the filter makes maintenance simple and stress-free - removing minerals that can cause a build-up of unsightly limescale and residue. We recommend you replace the filter every few months to keep it working its best.

Our verdict

A more affordable choice than the Brita model that took our top spot, Breville’s original HotCup water dispenser is a popular choice amongst Mumsnet users and reviewers. With a sleek black and stainless steel design that looks great out on display, it’s quick and easy to operate, even for left-handed users.

Thanks to the 1.5-litre capacity, you can expect to get between five and seven cups per tank before needing to refill, with Breville claiming it's more efficient than using a standard kettle. However, unlike the more expensive Breville model, the volume dispensed is fixed, making it a little more time-consuming if you need to fill larger cups or containers.

Best hot water dispenser for versatility

Caso HW 660 Turbo Hot Water Dispenser for Home

What we like
  • Caso claims it saves up to 50% on energy costs compared to standard kettles

  • Seven temperature settings

  • Large capacity water tank

  • Seven volume settings and a ‘free flow’ option

  • Baby setting for preparing baby formula

What we don't like
  • Costly

Key specs

Price on writing: £105 | Min capacity: 150ml | Max capacity: 2.7 litres | Variable temperature: Yes | Dimensions: ‎25.5 x 15.49 x 31.5cm | Power: 2600W

Our verdict

While standard kettles boil your water to 100°C, drinks such as green tea or even coffee are best served at slightly lower temperatures. The Caso Turbo Hot Water Dispenser provides a choice of seven different temperatures ranging from 40 to 100°C, allowing you to enjoy hot drinks straight away without the need to let the water cool first. There’s even a special baby function to prepare your baby’s bottles with ease.

Whether you’re making a cup of coffee for one or whipping up a quick pasta on the hob for your lunch, you can select from seven volume settings or opt for the ‘free flow’ function, allowing you to heat the exact amount of water you require.

Its high price tag makes this the most costly hot water dispenser on our list. However, with the potential to use 50% less energy than your kettle, it's a wise investment for tea and coffee connoisseurs.

Best non-electric hot water dispenser

Andrew James Airpot Hot Water Dispenser

What we like
  • Double walled

  • Leakproof lid

  • Portable with an easy-to-use carry handle

What we don't like
  • The pump action is more difficult to operate than button-activated dispensers

  • Reviewers found the hinge to be a little flimsy

  • Doesn't boil the water itself - but keeps it warm for up to 24 hours

Key specs

Price on writing: £38 | Min capacity: Unspecified | Max capacity: 3 litres (5 litre also available) | Variable temperature: No | Dimensions: 20 x 20 x 37cm | Power: N/A

Our verdict

If you have a smaller budget or are looking for a hot water dispenser with a large water capacity, the Andrew James Airpot is certainly worth considering.

Unlike electric dispensers that boil each cup on the go, this double-walled portable dispenser can keep water hot (or cold) for up to 24 hours once filled, ideal if you’re working from home and want plenty of coffee to get you through the day. Granted, you will need to boil the water in a kettle or on the hob before you use it, which is a faff, but it helps to avoid reboiling, giving you an instant supply of hot water all day.

Reviewers loved the portable design and convenient carry handle but found the pump action a little harder to operate than a button-activated design. The hinge on the leakproof lid can also be a little flimsy, so take care when filling.

What’s better: a hot water dispenser or a kettle?

Whether you should choose a hot water dispenser or kettle comes down to personal preference, how often you enjoy hot drinks and any challenges you may have with lifting or pouring a kettle.

Hot water dispensers are quick and easy to use at the touch of a button and unlike kettles, which can be easy to overfill, they only boil the exact amount of water you need - helping keep energy usage to a minimum.

They also make a convenient choice for those working from home, reducing the amount of time spent refilling and waiting for a kettle to boil. Some more expensive hot water dispensers also offer variable temperatures, allowing you to enjoy your drinks exactly as they’re meant to be served.

However, while hot water dispensers tend to be more energy efficient and reduce water wastage, it is entirely possible to boil a kettle efficiently by using the water gauge to only fill it with as much water as you need. You may also find that a kettle is a more compact and stylish choice, particularly if you're after a matching kettle and toaster set.

What’s the difference between a hot water dispenser and a boiling water tap?

A hot water dispenser works using a water tank, allowing you to serve multiple cups throughout the day at the touch of a button. Often with variable cup sizes, they reduce energy consumption by only boiling the exact amount of water you need.

A much more significant investment, boiling water taps require installation by a plumber. The major benefit is that you can have boiling water, quite literally, on tap, allowing you to create your hot drinks and prepare meals quickly and easily. As well as saving energy by only boiling what you need, boiling water taps also save valuable countertop space.

What to look for in a hot water dispenser

If you’re planning on purchasing a hot water dispenser for your home, here are some of the key features you should consider:

  • Capacity - Depending on how many hot drinks you are likely to consume throughout the day, you should consider the size and volume of the water dispenser. The larger the tank, the more capacity it will offer. As a general rule, a 1.5-litre tank can provide between five and seven cups before needing to be refilled.

  • Variable temperature - Does the hot water dispenser release boiling water or does it allow you to alter the temperature to your preferences? If you’re a tea drinker, you may prefer the option of serving water at lower temperatures. Some dispensers even have baby modes - providing reassurance that the water won’t be too hot when preparing your baby’s bottles.

  • Variable volume -  Does the hot water dispenser dispense a fixed amount of water or can you adjust the volume? While serving one cup at a time is energy efficient, it can be frustrating if you need to fill larger containers or require boiling water for cooking.

  • Ease of maintenance -  It’s worth considering how easy the hot water dispenser is to clean and maintain - especially if you live in a hard water area. Some water dispensers have filtration systems that can remove impurities from the water. While the cartridges need replacing regularly, this can prevent the build-up of unwelcome limescale and residue.

  • Ease of use - How easy is the interface to operate and how quickly does the water dispense? Is it suitable for left-handed users? How straightforward is it to fill before use?

How to descale a hot water dispenser

Just like coffee machines and kettles, hot water dispensers need to be carefully looked after and maintained to keep them running at their best - particularly if you live in a hard water area.

While the process of descaling your hot water dispenser will vary depending on the brand and the performance of any built-in limescale filters, most hot water dispensers can be cleaned using the best kettle descalers or natural alternatives such as baking soda, lemon juice or white vinegar.
