Cordless vacuum cleaners are a great alternative to traditional corded vacuum cleaners. Not only do they give you the freedom to roam away from the plug socket, but they’re also lightweight and take up far less storage space than traditional upright or cylinder vacuums.
But opting for a lighter vacuum cleaner doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on power or quality. Cordless vacuums have enough oomph to deal with embedded pet hair and a range of special tools and features like bendable wands help cordless vacuum cleaners to tackle dirt and dust in the awkward places that even robot vacuums struggle to reach. Whether you have carpet or hardwood floors, a cordless vacuum is a great choice.
If you're looking to get things looking shipshape at home, we have handy guides to the best vacuum cleaners, the best carpet cleaners, the best robot vacuum cleaners, the best steam cleaners and the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair.
From Dyson to Shark to Vax, here’s our pick of the best cordless vacuum cleaners to buy now.

Tested by Mumsnet: Read our in-depth Dyson V15 Detect review
As far as feedback on the Mumsnet forums is concerned, there is a clear winner for the title of best cordless vacuum. Moving easily between floor types including hardwood, tiles and carpet, the Dyson V15 Detect is ideal for daily use. Lightweight and easily manoeuvrable, this stick vacuum can tackle dirt lurking in even the most awkward nooks and crannies.
When in auto/medium mode, the suction power adjusts automatically to maximise battery life and perform as efficiently as possible. Battery length is displayed on the LCD screen, so there’s no chance of the V15 unexpectedly conking out mid-vacuum. On the downside, the V15 Detect requires a lengthy four-and-a-half-hour charging time in order to run for 60 minutes. But this is one of the longest run times of all the cordless vacuums on our list, so it’s worth the extra time if it means you can vacuum the whole house in one swoop.
Tower VL100 Optimum Cordless 3-in-1 Pole Vacuum, £129
Affordable
Very lightweight
Accurate battery indicator
Comes with a freestanding stand to provide a simple storage solution
Auto mode chooses the most appropriate suction strength
Anti-tangle brush bar works a treat
Takes a long time to charge
Struggles with embedded fluff and pet hair
Bagged/bagless: Bagless | Capacity: 1 litre | Weight: 2.5kg | Runtime: 30-60 minutes | Charge time: 4-5 hours | Included tools: 2-in-1 brush and crevice tool
Tested by Mumsnet: Read our full review of the Tower VL100 Optimum Cordless 3-in-1 Pole Vacuum
Although the Tower VL100 Optimum Cordless 3-in-1 Pole Vacuum hasn’t got the epic suction of a Dyson or Shark’s influencer fanbase, it’s a reliable, lightweight vacuum for an affordable price. The vacuum picks up an impressive amount of dust and was even able to suck up long hair without it getting tangled around the roller. However, it struggled with embedded threads, fluff and pet hair, even on the highest of its four power modes. The LED screen is able to tell you exactly how much battery was remaining, which is handy.
For keeping on top of everyday muck and mess, the Tower VL100 Optimum is a smart choice if you're on a limited budget.
Wand folds to get under low furniture
Can be converted into a handheld vacuum
A bit on the heavy side compared to other cordless vacuums on our list
Bagged/bagless: Bagless | Capacity: 0.7l | Weight: 4.1kg | Run time: Up to 40 minutes | Charging time: 3.5 hours | Included tools: Pet tool, crevice nozzle, upholstery nozzle, dusting brush, turbo brush and combination floor nozzle.
Tested by MNHQ: Read our full Shark IZ202UK Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner review
This cordless vacuum features Shark’s signature Anti-Hair Wrap Technology and DuoClean floorhead, which allows you to move seamlessly between carpeted and hard floors. It also features a bendable wand, so you can vacuum under low-level furniture without hurting your back. It even transforms into a cordless handheld vacuum, making it perfect for tackling stairs and extracting pet hair from soft furnishings.
The downside is the Shark only provides 16 to 40 minutes of cleaning time once fully charged, so depending on how much vacuuming you need to do, you may need to break this chore down into bite-sized chunks.
Henry Quick, £300
Quieter than comparable vacuum cleaners
Effective at dealing with pet hair
Simple assembly and easy to empty
Feels a bit heavy and bulky when used as a handheld
Bagged/bagless: Bagged | Capacity: 1 litre | Weight: 3.2kg | Runtime: 70 minutes or 16 minutes in power boost mode | Charge time: 150 minutes | Included tools: Crevice tool, 2-in-1 combi tool
Tested by Mumsnet: Read our full review of the Henry Quick cordless vacuum cleaner
Featuring Henry’s trademark cheery smile emblazoned on the handle, the Henry Quick is a powerful cordless vacuum cleaner that’s easy to assemble, use and empty.
It's a little on the heavy side and bulky when used as a handheld vacuum but it’s very manoeuvrable when used as a stick vacuum and the power boost button really does the business, particularly when it comes to tackling pet hair. The scent pods are a nice touch, especially if you’re having trouble with pet pongs.
We put the Henry Quick through its paces to see how it tackles dirt and grime at home. Following thorough testing, we're happy to report that it has the MNHQ seal of approval.

Tested by Mumsnet: Read our full review of the Vax Blade ONEPWR 4 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
Easy to use, effective on carpets and hard floors and available to buy for less than £200, the Vax Blade ONEPWR 4 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is hard to fault. Add in a quick-to-charge battery with a 45-minute runtime and it’s clear to see why this model is one of Vax’s best-selling vacuum cleaners. Plus it features an interchangeable battery that can used across ALL Vax floor care products - incredibly useful if you run out of power half-way up the stairs as you can swap it out and charge the spare battery in the meantime.
It’s generally lightweight - lighter than the Dyson V11 and Henry Quick in fact, but the handle itself feels quite heavy to hold. However, for easy everyday cleaning, we give it a big thumbs for performance and price.
Miele Triflex HX2 Cat and Dog Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, £449
Makes light work of pet hair
Good selection of tools
Smaller capacity than other cordless vacuums on our list
Pricey

Mumsnetters love to sing the praises of Miele vacuum cleaners and the brand has a great reputation for effectively dealing with pet hair. The Miele Triflex HX2 Cat and Dog Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is no exception.
A clever ultra-wide brush automatically adjusts speed and power according to floor type and three modes - comfort, reach and compact - help you to capture dirt and dust lurking in even the most hard-to-reach places. A 60-minute run time means that you can cover an impressive amount of ground. And after all that dirt-busting, you can neatly hang the Triflex on its own wall cradle for convenient storage. The big downside is the Triflex has quite a small capacity, which means you will have to empty the bin more often.

Tested by Mumsnet: Read our full review of the eufy Mach V1 Ultra
Is it a mop? Is it a vacuum cleaner? It’s both, actually! This clever product can shift dust and dirt from carpets and give hard floors a thorough clean too. It has an impressive run time (up to 82 minutes) compared to other cordless vacuum cleaners and a handy app lets you know when your vac/mop is in need of some maintenance.
It's suitable for daily mopping and hard floor washing; the steam mode is recommended for cleaning sealed hard floors, including sealed hardwood, marble, tile, and stone floors. For extra cleaning power when using the mop, just flick the switch and the Mach V1 Ultra will mix the cleaner and water using super fancy Tesla Valve Mixing.
It’s on the heavy side and certainly isn’t built for stairs, but if you're looking for a quality all-rounder for your carpets and hard floors, then the Mach V1 Ultra ticks a lot of boxes. Check out how it performs in a busy family home in our detailed review.

Effective at blitzing dirt and easy to manoeuvre across hard floors, rugs and carpets, the Ultenic FS1 is a capable cordless vac but its standout feature is undoubtedly its self-emptying bin. Its freestanding dust station sucks dust, dirt and debris from the canister when you've finished cleaning and neatly collects it into a 3-litre dust bag. What are the benefits of using a cordless vacuum cleaner?
With a cordless vacuum cleaner, you can hoover wherever you like without being restricted by a cord. Cordless vacuums are more lightweight compared to upright and cylinder vacuum cleaners, so they’re easier to manoeuvre and much kinder on the back. And of course there’s no pesky cord to get in the way. Cordless vacuum cleaners are easy to empty and many models come with a wall cradle for convenient storage - great if you don’t have the space for a bulky corded vacuum.
How to choose the best cordless vacuum cleaner
Here are some key things to consider when deciding on which is the best cordless vacuum cleaner for you.
Power: What air wattage does each vacuum cleaner offer? Cordless vacuums range between 20 - 250AW. Anything over 100AW will give you a powerful and efficient clean.
Bin capacity: A larger bin capacity means that you can clean for longer but your vacuum may be heavier. Most of the cordless vacuum cleaners on our list have a capacity of less than one litre, which may be enough to vacuum your whole living space in one fell swoop. But if you’re looking for a vacuum with a larger bin, cylinder models generally have a larger capacity, for example the cordless Henry can hold up to a whacking six litres of dirt, dust and grime.
Weight: One of the major benefits of a cordless vacuum is that they’re much lighter than corded upright or cylinder vacuum cleaners. The more lightweight the vacuum, the easier it is to hoover, particularly if you have a bad back or joint issues. However a lighter vacuum often goes hand-in-hand with a smaller dust bin capacity, so this is something that should be taken into consideration.
Run time: Many of the cordless vacuum cleaners on our list have a run time of between 40 and 60 minutes, which should be more than enough to clean most living spaces. Some models come with two batteries, which of course allows for an even longer vacuum if both are fully charged. If you have a larger house or clean more frequently, you may want to consider whether a corded vacuum would best meet your needs.
Tools and accessories: Make sure you check which tools come with your cordless vacuum, for example pet tools, crevice nozzles and brushes for upholstery. Some vacuums can transform into handheld vacs, others come with wall cradles for convenient storage and charging. You need to make sure that the cordless vacuum you have your eye on is up to the task at hand.
Price: Dyson cordless vacuum cleaners are generally more expensive than other brands, but many Mumsnetters swear by cheaper makes and models. Set yourself a budget and stick to it. Or, if you can wait, check out the Black Friday sales for some bargains.
