Our verdict

As a trusted, mid-priced brand, Plum comes highly recommended by Mumsnetters. Combining a fun and practical design with clever safety features, the trampoline provides plenty of bounce while keeping kids’ limbs away from the springs.

Trampoline assembly can vary wildly, and our testers were pleasantly surprised by the ease with which the Plum Space Zone II was built. Their 3 and 7 year olds enjoy the trampoline all year round, even after dark in the winter months and their parents even like a cheeky bounce from time to time.

Testing the trampoline over the space of 3 years, it’s stood up well to all weather conditions and requires next to no upkeep. A couple of small parts have needed replacing and our testers said these haven’t been easy to get.

All in all, we think this trampoline strikes a great balance between price and quality. With a relatively straightforward build and years of use for kids (and grown-ups) of all ages, it gets the thumbs up from us.

How we tested

Our parent testers, Maddie and Hugh, and their two sons, aged 3 and 7, have owned their Plum Space Zone II Springsafe 12ft trampoline for 3 years. We asked them all about their and their children's experiences with the trampoline, including the ease of set up, safety, design, and how much play value it gives kids. Through turning to real parents for reviews, we ensure we get honest opinions and feedback from people just like you.

What’s the Plum Space Zone II like to assemble?

While Plum recommend two people set aside two hours to assemble the 12ft model, Hugh  built the trampoline by himself in 2-3 hours. Consensus amongst Mumsnet users is that two people make a build like this much easier, but the possibility of one person assembling it by themselves is a big plus.

What’s the Plum Space Zone II like to use?

It’s fair to say the trampoline gets a lot of use. With 3 and 7 year olds around, the trampoline helps them burn off energy all year round and, with the addition of a set of festoon lights, at all hours too. The manufacturer recommends just one bouncer at a time for safety reasons, but most parents opt for buying a trampoline big enough to fit two kids with plenty of space to bounce, and the 12ft model is a great size for two.

“They literally use it in all weathers, all year round - we’ve put festoon lights around the top of it and one of their favourite things is ‘night bouncing’.”

The trampoline stays up all year round without a cover, and Maddie and Hugh have tied it down in case of high winds. It remains in great condition, thanks to the well-designed pads that shelter the springs from both bouncing children and weather. However, a couple of the small black washers have broken - our testers have tried to get spares to replace these, but haven’t managed to. The trampoline works fine without them, but there is a little movement in the poles.

“We haven’t staked it, but it is tied down and that meant it weathered the gnarly storms we had in the autumn just fine.”

How does the Plum Space Zone II compare to other trampolines?

Smack bang in the middle of the market, the Plum Space Zone II appeals to parents looking for safety features and quality without the big price tag of a Springfree or Vuly trampoline.

While, unlike a Springfree, the Plum Space Zone II has springs, its safety net and padding is designed to keep bouncers completely separate from the springs, which reduces the risk of most trampoline injuries - as long as the enclosure remains in good condition.

The Plum Space Zone II frame is made from top-quality galvanised steel, with unique “Tramp Klamp” brackets encasing the joints, to further guard against rust and deterioration. The jump mat is UV treated for extra durability, and the net has support at the rim to stop it from sagging over time, and it must be said that the trampoline looks brand new after 3 years of regular use.

More expensive trampolines boast a complete lack of springs and an almost-silent bounce, but we think, for the price, the Plum Space Zone II is a worthy competitor.

However, you can get a Plum trampoline that's a shade smaller for less than half the RRP of the Space Zone II - the Plum Fun Springsafe 10ft. At a glance, there's not much between the two trampolines, apart from the size difference. But on closer inspection, you do get a lot more with the Space Zone II. A higher-spec frame and enclosure means the Space Zone II is sturdier and heavier, plus it's suitable for adults as well as children while the Plum Fun has a lower maximum weight which rules adults out.

We think the Space Zone II stands out as a mid-range trampoline offering great quality and design features at a reasonable price.
