How we tested

Mumsnet editor Poppy put the water bottle through its paces over the course of three months. Using it at home, in the car, on dog walks and train journeys, she took detailed notes on the bottle's user-friendliness, quality, the taste of the filtered water and crucially, whether it leaked.

Brita Water Filter Bottle: our verdict

I rarely leave the house without a bottle of water, but when I'm heading further afield, making one easy to carry bottle last all day can be a bit of a pain. So I was excited to try out Brita's Water Filter Bottle, which can be filled up anywhere.

With a tiny charcoal disc to do the filtering, I was able to fill the bottle up from public water fountains as well as the hard water that comes out of my kitchen taps, without worrying about the taste or impurities.

The filter slots easily into the bottle's lid, there's none of the soaking involved in filter jugs. I did find the spout a little bit stiff to pop up - it's not one you can do with your lips or even your teeth - so you need two hands, which didn't make it ideal for driving. The water flows easily through the filter disc, you don't need to suck hard or wait for it to drip through.

However, the flipside of a stiff spout is that the bottle is totally leakproof. The lid itself is cleverly designed so that it compresses the spout when it clicks closed, so there's no way for water to escape if the lid is closed.

While I'm not averse to tap water, I live in an old house with old pipes, in a hard water area, so I make sure all our drinking water is filtered. It was nice to be able to fill up my Brita bottle from the tap, as it's cooler than the water in my filter jug, and I don't have to wait for it to filter.

On days when I was out for the whole day, it was great to have that extra filter when I filled up my bottle from a public drinking fountain. However, you shouldn't fill up a filter bottle from a non-drinking water source, so it was more of a nice-to-have. It did make me less likely to buy a bottle of water though, as I wanted to make the most of it.

What's the Brita Water Filter Bottle like to use day-to-day?

The bottle is chunkier than other reusable water bottles I have at home, and crucially it didn't fit into my Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag, but it came around with me in the car or on longer trips into London and Brighton for work. I also like having it on my desk while I WFH - the bottle only filters what you drink, so it means I get more out of my water filter jugs.

Mumsnetter FionnulaTheCooler recommends the Brita Water Filter Bottle for travelling abroad:

We bought those Brita water bottles with the built in filter and it made the water fountain water bearable to drink, saved us a fortune on buying drinks all day.

The filter disc needs replacing after 60l or one month of use, and packs of 3 are available for about £12 on Amazon. I found myself choosing the Brita bottle over others because it was quick to fill up from the tap, holds a generous 600ml of water and has a robust, leak-proof lid I could trust to keep in my backpack all day.

Brita Water Filter Bottle: how does the water taste?

I have a Brita Marella filter and a Phox filter at home, and the water from the bottle tastes the same as these - clean, fresh and easy to drink. I'm not fussy when it comes to water to be honest (as long as it's not fizzy), but living in a hard water area, I do prefer my drinking water to be and taste filtered, so the Brita Water Filter Bottle did the job perfectly.

Does the Brita Water Filter Bottle offer good value for money?

At the time of writing this review, the Brita Water Filter Bottle is discounted on Amazon at £11, which I think is an absolute bargain for a specialist water bottle - you'd pay about the same for a standard plastic water bottle like the Ion8. However, standard water bottles don't come with the ongoing cost of replacing a filter like the Brita does.

In short, I think the Brita Water Filter Bottle is a brilliant invention and an absolute lifesaver for those who want the reassurance of freshly filtered water, wherever they fill up from.
