Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro Tablet: what is it?

The Amazon Fire HD Kids Pro is a tablet designed for kids. Linked to a Parent Dashboard on your phone, you can tweak settings and approve (or not) apps before your child downloads them.

Available with a 10-inch or 8-inch screen, the Fire HD Kids Pro has a more streamlined ‘grown-up’ look than older versions of the tablet, but still has a tough, durable case and bright colour options to appeal to children.

New features include apps such as Netflix and YouTube Kids, plus the ability to make calls to approved contacts and surf the net without coming across inappropriate content.

What age is the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro for?

Amazon says the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro is designed for children aged six to 12, and there’s lots of content for different age groups.

Unlike the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Tablet - which is aimed at ages three to seven - the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro comes with an open (but filtered) web browser and a parent-approved app store.

What's the difference between the Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet and the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro?

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro Tablet features the same hardware and octa-core processor as the Amazon Fire HD 10, as well as 3GB of RAM and full HD display. The real difference is that the Kids Pro is tailored specifically towards children as it comes with a colourful child-friendly case, two-year warranty to cover accidental damage and a year's membership to Amazon Kids+.

First impressions of the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro Tablet comes with a tough but streamlined case available in four colours.

Here are the key specs:

  • Octa-core processor

  • 3GB of RAM

  • 10.1" full HD display

  • Dual cameras

  • USB-C (2.0) port

  • Up to 1 TB of expandable storage

  • Screen made with strengthened aluminium silicate glass

Our testers found setting up the tablet and parents dashboard really straightforward - especially if you already have an Amazon account - and their kids were able to start exploring the tablet’s many features quickly. One tester said adding contacts to the tablet is quite complicated, so that’s one feature to watch out for.

“The kids loved it - they found it very easy to use and to get started with, and plenty of apps and games they like.” - Mumsnet user ahagwearsapointybonnet

How child-friendly is the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro?

From child's perspective, there’s a lot to love about the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro. With parental controls set remotely, children are able to explore the web, play games such as Minecraft and use apps like YouTube Kids without the danger of stumbling into anything disturbing.

"It is amazing! Performed really well and is a great introduction to tablets for younger children. My daughter found it really easy to use and keeps showing me new things she has discovered. I highly recommend it."

- Mumsnetter Cliffdonville

Older kids will enjoy making calls to their friends (parents have to approve contact first), reading books on the Kindle app and watching Netflix.

For younger children, there are audiobooks and age-appropriate games to get stuck into, and they can also take pictures and videos using the built-in camera.

How parent-friendly is the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro?

Our testers loved the Amazon Parent Dashboard, which gives you the ability to control screen time, approve apps, monitor what your child is doing on the tablet, remotely pause devices and even set educational goals that have to be met before entertainment apps are accessible.

One drawback is that films and TV shows available on Amazon Prime can’t be watched on a child’s profile unless you purchase them again.

“The parental controls have given me an added sense of security. The Parent Dashboard was very easy to understand and operate.”

- Mumsnet user Farwah

Price: is the Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids Pro good value for money?

At £100 more than the Amazon Fire 7 Kids Tablet, the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro doesn’t come cheap. However it has so many more features and offers children an excellent, safe experience with increased freedom compared to the cheaper model. There’s also the option of the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro at £149.99, which has all the same features as the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro but just a smaller screen.

"I would definitely recommend it as a good family tablet. I often use it after the kids are in bed! A really good all-rounder that's great value for money." - Mumsnet user Lovidoodaa
