We did it! We're finally through the coldest months of the year and that means you can spend as much time out in nature as you want.

One of the thingst that makes Montreal so special (and one of the biggest reasons I moved here from Toronto) was because of the green spaces that integrate seamlessly into the city.

Everyone knows about the big city parks like Parc Jean-Drapeau, Parc La Fontaine and Mount Royal, but there are lesser-known options in the city where you aren’t as likely to face large crowds and can always find a sunny spot to lay your blanket.

Here are seven you should know about:

Parc Morgan

Where: 4370, rue Sainte-Catherine Est

Reason to go: Located in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood, Parc Morgan is accessible by both transit and bike path. You can find a workout area, water feature, and well-maintained paths that are great for those with accessibility needs. You will often find both adults and children playing in the splash pad area on hot days. There is ample greenspace to hold a barbeque or organize a picnic. If you are visiting with little ones, a renovated jungle gym and play area are perfect for keeping them occupied. There are tables and benches on the lawns and many shady areas to keep out of the sun in the summer.

Parc de Dieppe

Where: 3400, ave. Pierre-Dupuy

Reason to go: This park is visible from the waterfront in Old Montreal but many people never visit because of its rather secluded entrance point. Parc de Dieppe is located on the point that extends out into the St.Lawrence. You will often find photographers and fishermen at this location for its water access and beautiful views of old port. This park is accessible by bike and has its own bixi stop so you can dock a city bike once you arrive. There are lots of benches and tables and almost every landmark on the waterfront is visible from the point like the wheel, city skyline, old port, Jacques Cartier Bridge, Parc Jean-Drapeau and all the boats in the river. On your way to the park, check out the views of Habitat 67, one of the city's most unique architectural sights!

Parc Marguerite Bourgeoys

Where: 2286, rue Wellington

Reason to go: Parc Marguerite Bourgeoys is located in the southwest borough of Montreal and is a 15-minute walk from a metro stop. What makes this park stand out is its beautiful trees that provide refreshing shade in the summer and magnificent colours in the fall. Many visitors have noted how picturesque the trees are even when covered in snow and ice. Sculptures are scattered amongst the trees and this park is also connected to Le Ber Park which features numerous play structures for kids. In the spring Marguerite Bourgeoys features a stunning tulip garden! The historic Maison de Marguerite is not far from the park and I definitely recommend taking a walk there if you are in the area.

Lachine Canal

Where: Runs through Montreal

Reason to go: The beautiful waterway is a perfect spot for pedestrians to walk and bike along maintained paths. My favourite area to walk the canal is around the lochs, which are preserved as a historical city site that is still used. The iconic mills, though no longer in use, are in full view from this spot on the canal and many people pause to have a drink on the benches and table along the water. You can even rent a kayak or paddle-board and head into the water.

Parc Angrinon

Where: 3400, boul. des Trinitaires

Reason to go: Angrinon Park located in the southwest borough of the city is probably the best known park on the list as there is a subway station named after it. Many people may be familiar with the name but might never have visited. Well connected and large in size, Parc Angrinon has 97 hectares of forest land and 1.1km long lake as well as playgrounds and a dog park. It may feel out of the way but it is worth the trip! The remarkable sunset views from the park are frequently photographed and the lake will leave you feeling relaxed and recharged. Take a picnic in the vast open lawns or a stroll down one of the many winding paths this spring.

Parc Arthur Therrien

Where: 3750, boul. Gaétan-Laberge

Reason to go: This is the park to head to if you’re looking for water views as well as activities. Parc Arthur Therrien is located in Verdun and features outdoor tennis courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields (even sledding slopes in winter) to meet the needs of any outdoor sports fan. The skate park is a fun place to meet with friends and perfect tricks on a well-maintained course. In the summer, the park opens a swimming pool and wading pool for adults and little ones to cool off and enjoy a day in the heat. A dog park is also located here to let your furry friend off leash and get some exercise. Verdun Beach is accessible in the park and visitors can head into the swimmable shallows marked by the buoys.

Saint-Louis Square

Where: rue du Square Saint-Louis, Montreal, QC

Reason to go: Located in the Plateau, this parkette is known for it's instagrammability, but it also makes a great destination for a meet-up with friends. It has an old stone gazebo where ice cream and coffee are served and is cordoned off by wrought iron fences. A spectacular fountain roars in the centre and colourful homes overlook the space. It almost feels like stepping foot in another country. It has been rightfully dubbed “the closest thing to a European neighbourhood square you'll find this side of the Atlantic" by the Project for Public Spaces.
