Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, TODAY (Sat., Oct. 21, 2023) with a fantastic pay-per-view (PPV) event from “Fight Island,” featuring a “Champion vs. Championsuper fight rematch between Lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev, defending his 155-pound strap against Featherweight roost-ruler, Alexander Volkanovski, in a last-second ESPN+ headliner. In UFC 294’s pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event, former Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, will attempt to derail the 185-pound hype of Middleweight boogeyman, Khamzat Chimaev (also on super short notice). We’ve got Magomed Ankalaev, Johnny Walker and Said Nurmagomedov, too!

125 lbs.: Tim Elliott vs. Muhammad Mokaev

Round one: Elliott pressuring right off the bat. He catches a knee and eats a right hand before taking Mokaev down into guard. Half guard now. One minute in. Mokaev turns to his knees and stands, chasing Elliott with punches that fall short. He shoots, Elliott sprawls and lands a knee on the way up. Two minutes in. Mokaev absorbs a left hand and shoots; again Elliott is ready with a sprawl. He lands a pair of illegal knees while Mokaev has his hands down. No point deduction, but they restart at a distance. Two minutes to go.

Elliott throwing a lot of offbeat kicks. Long right hand from Mokaev. Elliott answers with a flurry, then grabs an arm-in guillotine when Movakev takes him down. Mokaev waiting it out. One minute to go. Mokaev pops his head free. He stays heavy until the bell. 10-9 Elliott.

Round two: Mokaev shoots immediately and Elliott is waiting with the guillotine. Again Mokaev waits it out, landing some light body shots before popping his head free. Elliott throwing elbows off his back. One minute in. Mokaev staying tight, chipping away with short punches. Two minutes in. Both men striking as Mokaev looks for half guard. Mokaev postures and dives in with a right hand, only to get caught in a triangle. Mokaev slams his way out with two minutes to go.

More short punches from Mokaev on top. One minute to go. Mokaev rides out the rest of the round. 10-9 Mokaev.

Round three: Elliott pressures Mokaev to the fence and sprawls on Mokaev’s reactive shot. He fires some questionable knees that prompt the ref to pause the action, but they restart in the front headlock. Mokaev playing the game, putting his hand down whenever Elliott is about to throw a knee, but he surprises Elliott with a takedown a minute in. Once again playing heavy and landing the occasional punch. Two minutes in. Mokaev moving to mount and he’s got an arm triangle. He moves to side control and there’s the tap.

Final result: Mokaev def. Elliott by submission (arm-triangle choke) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!


155 lbs.: Trevor Peek vs. Mohammad Yahya

Round one: Low kicks from Peek. Surprisingly measured approach from him so far. A 1-2 either drops Yahya or backs him up enough that he slips; either way, Peek follows with some big swings before taking him down into half guard a minute in. Yahya gets to his feet, Peek still attached. Peek looking for trips. Two minutes in. Yahya considers a front headlock, drops it. Knees to the thigh from Peek. Yahya breaks free and separates before trying a body kick. Straight left. Two minutes to go.

Low kicks from Peek. Nice straight left by Yahya. Peek falls short with a head kick. One minute to go. Peek blitzes, avoiding a flying knee before changing levels. He switches from single to double, all while Yahya is slowly cinching up an anaconda choke. Yahya rolls for it, but it’s not deep enough and Peek bullies him to his back before the bell. 10-9 Yahya.

Round two: Both open with body kicks. Peek loads up on a huge right and trips when it whiffs. One minute in. Peek wades in and they trade against the fence. Low kick from Yahya. Peek backs him up with a low kick and kinda half-aborts a blitz. Low kick. Two minutes in. Straight left from Yahya. Peek catches him with an awkward 2-1, eats the same in return. Yahya pushing forward now. Back-to-back head kick attempts with two minutes to go.

Peek tries a crescent kick to spinning back fist, then shoots in. Yahya defends and blocks the subsequent flurry. Body kick attempt. One minute to go. Peek backs him up and lands a low kick, then eats a right hand as his flailing punches whiff. Yahya circling, absorbs a low-high flurry. 10-9 Yahya.

Round three: Peek back to his usual self to start the round, slinging heat before taking Yahya down and moving to mount. Yahya turns to his knees and stands. Jockeying for position a minute in, then another trip by Peek into mount. Yahya stands and slips out the back door. Yahya’s output has dropped even further as Peek throws windmills at him. Peek takes him to the fence two minutes in. Not much happens there and they separate a minute later.

Solid counter left by Yahya. Body kick. Awkward clinch entry from Peek and they jockey for position against the fence. They separate with a minute to go. Peek slings bombs at him, then forces him back with a teep. 2-1 into the clinch by Yahya and Peek takes him down into half guard. Peek briefly mounts him, then stands over him until the bell. 10-9 Peek, who also has an argument for the first two rounds.

Final result: Peek def. Yahya by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Javid Basharat vs. Victor Henry

Round one: Low kick from Henry to start. Basharat gets tripped up when both kick at the same time, but Henry can’t capitalize. Both looking for calf kicks. One minute in. Low kick from Henry, Basharat looks for counters. Both checking a lot of kicks coming their way. Back kick by Basharat after missing the first kick. Sharp jab. Two minutes in. Basharat keeping his distance. Body kick met by a Henry low kick. Henry catches a body kick, can’t use it, lands a counter leg kick. Basharat catches a leg kick in return, lands a straight right, and takes Henry down. Henry works his way up with two minutes to go.

Solid takedown defense by Henry. Basharat gets him off-balance and shoots in before exiting with a knee. Spinning back kick attempt, snap kick, oblique kicks with a minute to go. Henry counters a Brazilian kick with a low kick. More low kicks from Henry. 1-2 from Basharat, who catches a body kick. Henry takes him to the fence and they trade knees to the body. 10-9 Basharat.

Round two: Basharat’s first low kick of the round catches Henry in the balls and it’s a bad one. Henry’s moaning in pain, rolling around the mat. He takes the full five minutes but can’t recover, so that looks like a no contest.

Final result: No contest (low blow) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!


185 lbs.: Abu Azaitar vs. Sedriques Dumas

Round one: Low kick from Dumas to start. Head kick blocked. Low kick by Azaitar, who counters the return kick with an overhand right for a knockdown. Dumas weathers the attack and gets to his feet, where he quickly trips Azaitar down into half guard. One minute in. Dumas staying tight, looking for elbows. Two minutes in. Dumas continuing to patiently chip away. Knee to the body. Two minutes to go.

Azaitar doing nothing to get off his back and Dumas is perfectly happy to ride this out. One minute to go. Dumas trying to isolate the far arm, can’t do so. 10-9 Dumas.

Round two: Low kicks from Dumas. Azaitar blitzes, falls short. Counter flurry lands better. Dumas ducks a left hook and comes back with a leg kick. One minute in. Both whiff on big right hands. Dumas falls short with a head kick. Low kick by Azaitar. Dumas jab two minutes in. Pure sparring this round. Azaitar tries a counter flurry. Two minutes to go.

Azaitar tries a front kick, eats a low kick. Body kick and right hand from Dumas. Azaitar misses on another flurry. One minute to go. Zero urgency or accuracy from either man. Azaitar catches a leg kick for a takedown and opens up with punches. Dumas granby rolls free and gets to his feet. Knees from Azaitar on the exit, then a low kick. 10-9 Azaitar.

Round three: Staring contest to start the round. Low kicks from Azaitar a minute in. Dumas punches him in the leg for some reason. Ugly shot, no dice. Azaitar lands some punches as Dumas retreats, grabbing Dumas’ hair to do so and prompting the ref to pause the action. Two minutes in. Azaitar tries a flurry, gets rocked by a jab. 1-2 from Dumas. Body shot by Azaitar, who’s got his wits back. Body kick attempt. Two minutes to go.

Low kick from Dumas. Neither man showing any urgency. Low kick to front kick attempt. Azaitar lands to the body as he flurries. One minute to go. Dumas moving forward but not punching. Azaitar throwing from too far out to land. Dumas denies a takedown and looks for a head kick as Azaitar disengages. Garbage fight. 10-9 Dumas

Final result: Dumas def. Azaitar by unanimous decision


155 lbs.: Anshul Jubli vs. Mike Breeden

Round one: Jubli keeping Breeden at bay with kicks as Breeden plods forward. Breeden throwing volume, not finding the mark. One minute in. Jubli getting the better of the boxing, using his jab alongside the kicks to keep things at his preferred distance. Nice knee buzzes Breeden. Two minutes in. BReeden continuing to march forward and throw volume. Nice straight right. He shoots, no dice. Body shot from Jubli with two minutes to go.

More combination work from Jubli. He answers a low kick with sharp punches. Knee from Jubli as Breeden lands punches inside. Nice exchange with a minute to go. Lead-leg kicks keeping Breeden away. Sharp straight right. Breeden charges him with a flurry in return. Good low kick and 1-2 from Jubli, who absorbs a left hook and lands a 1-2 to the body. One more knee before the bell. 10-9 Jubli.

Round two: Straight right hurts Breeden and Jubli goes to work, teeing off against the fence. Lead right into a level change for Jubli. Breeden reverses and separates. Punches, knees, and kicks landing for Jubli. One minute in. Breeden still plodding after him. 1-2 from Jubli, straight right from Breeden. Jubli straight right met by a Breeden left hook. Solid lead right by Breeden after eating a jab. Jubli comes back with a body kick two minutes in. Two-piece from Breeden. Hard right hand from Jubli met by a flurry. Breeden body kick; Jubli’s still getting the better of it but Breeden’s picking it up. Jubli straight right. 1-2 from Breeden. Two minutes to go.

2-1 by Jubli. Heavy punch exchange. Knee from Jubli draws a nod. Low kicks met by a flurry from Breeden. Breeden 1-2. Heavy Jubli right cross. One minute to go. Breeden tries to pump on the crowd. Jump knee misses. Kicks from Jubli. Breeden fires a flurry. 10-9 Jubli.

Round three: Solid knee from Jubli. Breeden continuing to pursue with power punches and lands a hard right cross. Jabs from Breeden, then a big counter right as he taunts. Breeden walking him down and Jubli looks like he’s slowing a bit. Failed shot from Jubli. One minute in. Low kick from Jubli, but a counter right has him wobbled. Breeden follows with power punches and shrugs off a level change. Breeden continuing to talk smack between flurries, denies another level change two minutes in. Big right hands from both. Breeden doing more taunting than throwing now. Slow front kicks by Jubli, then a hard straight right. The next big flurry from Breeden ends with a chopping right around the guard that sends Jubli awkwardly to the mat, where Breeden cracks him with one more before the ref intervenes.

Final result: Breeden def. Jubli by TKO (punches) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!


145 lbs.: Muhammad Naimov vs. Nathaniel Wood

Round one: Both attacking the calf early. Wood marches in with some heavy swings and Naimov sits him down with a counter right, then takes him down with an inside trip when Wood shoots in. On top in guard a minute in. Naimov chipping away with punches at the base of the fence. Some solid shots landing. Wood gets an underhook and works his way to his feet, Naimov still attached. Two minutes to go.

Wood reverses, gets reversed in turn, eats a knee to the bollocks that has him in agony. He manages to recover and return to action before long. Solid low kicks. He follows with a straight right that has Naimov seeing stars, then ties up and trips him into side control. He rushes the move to mount with a minute to go and Naimov sweeps into top guard. Wood turns to his knees and Naimov hunts a front choke. They trade elbows on the way up. Fun round. 10-9 Naimov.

Round two: Wood takes another nut shot in the opening seconds, then verbally spars with the fans when they give him grief. It was a front kick right to the cup, so I’m on his side here. Naimov shoots when they resume and lands nice knees to the body. Body shots from Wood, then a sneaky foot sweep to land on top. Naimov grabs a kimura and uses it to stand, then grabs the fence as well when Wood tries to take his back. One minute in. Wood with one hook, trying to worm the other one in. He abandons it and puts Naimov on the fence. Outside trip puts Naimov on top in half guard two minutes in. Wood regains guard. Two minutes to go.

Naimov postures up for some punches, then passes to half guard. Wood uses the opportunity to work to his feet. Naimov changes levels again and Wood jumps on a kimura, but quickly loses it with a minute to go. Knees to the thigh from Naimov as Wood tries to work his way up. Wood sits out and puts him on the fence before the bell. 10-9 Naimov.

Round three: Low kick from Wood, hook kick from Naimov. Naimov tries a spinning back kick and nearly gives up his back in the process. Wood settles for taking him to the fence and landing some short punches before separating. Naimov head kick blocked. One minute in. Wood advancing, Naimov circling. Short combo from Wood, straight left from Naimov. Two minutes in. Counter low kick from Wood to answer a head kick. Naimov shoots under a right hand to take Wood down again against the fence. Wood works to his feet with a whizzer, which he uses to deny the next to takedown attempts. Two minutes to go.

Naimov changes levels again, but backs off when Wood threatens a front choke. Big 1-2 from Wood and now he’s on the attack against the fence. Both men swinging big. Front kick and 2-1 from Wood with a minute to go. Counter 2-1. Naimov on his bike as Wood pursues. Wood shoots, denied. Naimov tries a wheel kick and ends up on his back, where Wood smashes him with punches but can’t put him away in no small part because Naimov grabs his glove. 10-9 Wood.

Final result: Naimov def. Wood by unanimous decision


115 lbs.: Viktoriia Dudakova vs. Jinh Yu Frey

Round one: Dudakova ends the first exchange with a solid cross. She punches into the clinch, lands a knee, can’t keep hold. One minute in. Dudakova tries a combination. Left hand lands and they trade in center cage. Dudakova takes her to the fence. Two minutes in. Frey soon separates and they return to the center. Both women falling short with most of their punches. Combos from Dudakova, then a hard clash of heads. They pause for a bit before resuming with two minutes to go.

Frey stuffs another takedown, eats a knee. More knees from Dudakova and a 1-2 on the exit. One minute to go. Dudakova gets over-unders, nice defense from Frey to stay on her feet. Frey throws a naked low kick and Dudakova drops her with a counter left in the final seconds. 10-9 Dudakova.

Round two: Heavy exchange to start the round before Frey takes her down into half guard. One minute in. Frey not landing anything from the top but does pass to side control. There’s some half-hearted elbows two minutes in. Dudakova regains guard and immediately spins for an armbar, which Frey avoids before coming back with punches. Upkicks from Dudakova with two minutes to go.

Frey avoids some big kicks before coming back down into side control. Sudakova quickly regains guard and goes back to attacking the arm. Frey’s elbow is free, so they take turns swatting each other with hammerfists. Dudakova stands with a minute to go, eating a left hand as she does. Another clash of heads, then Dudakova tries to swarm. Body kick lands for her. Both try head kicks in the final seconds. 10-9 Frey.

Round three: Body shots from Dudakova. Good exchange in the center, Dudakova gets the better of it. Counter 1-2. Frey shoots, denied, eats an elbow. One minute in. Dudakova keeping her distance. Both flurry, neither connects. Solid counter right by Frey. Both land solid lefts two minutes in. Back-and-forth striking, neither landing super clean or committing to anything huge. Two minutes to go.

Nice straight right from Dudakova. More straight shots as Frey tries to wade in. Frey avoids a left hand and takes her to the fence. One minute to go. Knees from Dudakova as she defends. Whizzer keeps her up when Frey tries to wrench her down. Frey lands a left hand on the break. Some final punch exchanges. 10-9 Dudakova.

Final result: Dudakova def. Frey by unanimous decision


185 lbs.: Sharabutdin Magomedov vs. Bruno Silva

Round one: Quick exchange of low kicks and punches to start. Magomedov bouncing at range and firing low kicks as Silva steadily wades after him. Silva tries a spinning back kick a minute in, then puts together a nice combination. Low kick again. Heavier one from Magomedov, then a head kick and 1-2 that seems to hurt Silva. Magomedov tries to fly in with a knee, no dice two minutes in. He stuffs a takedown and goes back to the low kicks. Silva falls short with a flurry. Two minutes to go.

Low kick to teep from Magomedov, then a counter right before circling away. Low kick to head kick but he catches some cup. Silva goes back to pressuring after taking a bit to recover. More leg kicks by Magomedov with a minute to go. They trade lefts in center cage. Body kick from Magomedov. Silva manages to pin him on the fence and they slug it out, Magomedov whiffing a spinning back kick but landing some solid body kicks. 10-9 Magomedov.

Round two: Silva low kick. Body kick to hook kick from Magomedov in return. Silva lands a straight left, tries a takedown, eats knees and a teep. Brazilian kick to body kick by Magomedov a minute in. 1-2-knee by Magomedov, who slams home more knees when Silva enters and tries to spin. Really running circles around Silva at this point two minutes in. Low kicks by Magomedov. Hard counter jab. Silva finally manages to time one of Magomedov’s low kicks and take him down into guard. Both striking off the ground. Silva tries to posture up and eats a hard upkick with two minutes to go.

Magomedov landing well off his back with punches and elbows. Silva stands over him, weathering upkicks and punches before coming back down with a minute to go. Solid elbow to the body. Silva stands and Magomedov tries a Pettis-style head kick off his back. 10-9 Magomedov.

Round three: More low kicks from Magomedov but Silva again times one for a takedown into guard. Periodic punches. One minute in. Good diving shots after backing off for a moment. He postures, blocks some upkicks, then goes back into guard. Magomedov considers a triangle, nothing there. Two minutes in. Magomedov scoots to the fence, works to his feet, and lands a good knee before separating. He denies another shot and answers with punches and elbows as Silva puts on his earmuffs, but Silva surprises him with another double-leg into guard. Two minutes to go.

Elbows from Magomedov off his back as Silva patiently throws punches. Magomedov puts in a knee shield and whacks him with more elbows. One minute to go. Silva backs off, then re-enters in potential triangle danger. He manages to pass to side control, but Magomedov makes enough space to kick him in the head again and try to swarm at the bell. 10-9 Magomedov.

Final result: Magomedov def. Silva by unanimous decision
